In the period following the civil war often referred to as the Gilded age, American Economy advanced both in size and function ( manufacturing rose from $3 billion to $9 billion) at an exceptional rate. New technologies, improved transportation and communication network , small businesses and sector’s of American economy like banking, manufacturing, steel, oil refining were now dominated by corporations, and new managerial techniques were some of the prominent changes in the business operations during the gilded age. This eventually led to the per capita income to rise to a new level and the United states became the largest industrial nation.

The Gilded Age, a period from 1870 to 1900 that mainly revolved around and was influenced by big business and corporations. The newly found mass production of resources positively brought about and created a huge array of products but also negatively led to a wide disconnect between social classes and unevenly distributed power that resulted in the formation of unions and the passing of antitrust laws and legislation.

The working conditions during the Gilded Age were poor and unstable. Many people lost their jobs for simply being sick or trying to take a day off because of a lost family member or friend. People would fight for power in the workplace. Workers organized the first large American labor unions during the Gilded Age. There were constant strikes and violence.

Hi Coltan, great examples you gave of business practices today, such as Android and Apple. As steel, machinery, and manufacturing were technological innovations of the Gilded Age, as you mentioned, we do see this similarity today, for example, with Android and Apple. The business men and business practices of these corporations are "white collar" people who are specialized experts to these large businesses. Is it possible that Android and Apple use similar methods, business practices and ways to becoming profitable to big companies to that of the Gilded Age? Following the Civil War and now moving into the industrial upcoming of America, the Gilded Age had re-paved the financial state of New York . Money had quickly changed hands and while New York’s elites were striving, Wall Street had dominated the economy leaving the division of wealthy and poor greater than ever. Millionaire’s mansions and poversed sprawls were merely separated by blocks. The importance of class and status in this setting was looked upon as a necessity of survival for most and an even greater strive for the unmarried women.

Now, compare which fractile’s purchasing power went up during that period with changes in the purchasing powers of the years 1973 to 2000 found in Fig 8. The top one-hundredth percent fractile’s purchasing power went up 7.27 times what it was in 1960. The trend continues with the next nine-hundredth percent fractile. They saw an increase of 3.55 times of what their purchasing power was in 1960. The next four-tenth percent fractile also saw an increase in their purchasing power. Their purchasing power was 2.14 times higher than it was in 1960. The next five-tenth percent fractile’s purchasing power went up 1.72 times higher than it was in 1960 as well. As for the next four percent fractile, their purchasing power went up 1.43 times higher than it was in 1960. The five percent fractile after them went up also, 1.26 times what it was in 1960. The only fractile that lost purchasing power was the bottom ninety. They had 0.95 times the purchasing power they had in 1960.

To be gilded is to have an appealing quality which covers an unappealing quality. Throughout the late nineteenth century, several economic, social, and political advancements occurred, such as a rapidly expanding railroad industry, wealth spread throughout the country, and all time high voting turnouts. Meanwhile, the lower class expanded, children endured grueling working conditions, and political corruption occurred. The latter issues were overshadowed by the former economic, social, and political advances, causing the late nineteenth century to be called the Gilded Age.

In February of 1870 Twain married Olivia Langdon, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Twain and Olivia had been writing letters to each other for a while. With help from Olivia’s father, Twain bought a one-third interest in the Express of Buffalo, N.Y., and started writing for the Galaxy a magazine out of N.Y. Twain’s first child Landon, was born in November of 1870. Tragically his son died of diphtheria before he had turned two. During this time Twain was working on his book Roughing It, in February of 1872, the book was published and sold well. In March of the same year Olivia Susan Clemens was born in Elmira. Twain went to England the same year and when he came home he started writing a book with the help of Charles Dudley Warner (a friend) about the political corruption in the United states. The book was titled The Gilded Age was published in 1873, people enjoyed the book so well that a play was made based on the funniest character in the novel. This book was Twain’s first novel that he had tried to write.

A lesson regarding the immigration experiences from various periods of U.S. History offers a great opportunity to discuss how many of the same forms of discrimination faced during the past are similar today. This lesson is designed to show students the sentiment various immigrant groups faced when they came to the United States during the Gilded Age. This lesson is designed to be implemented in an 8th grade U.S. History classroom. The lesson will be incorporated for the immigration portion of the Gilded Age Unit, in this case this lesson will be the fourth lesson of a ten day unit. Prior to this lesson students were introduced to lessons that addressed immigration experiences for various families who came to the United States from Europe.
