Animal Farm In-Class Essay – Notes ================================== Introduction In the allegory, Animal Farm (George Orwell, 1993) many of the characters are representative of real people, and I have chosen to write about Napoleon and Snowball, the two types of leaders, and how their struggle for power ultimately left both them, and their nation, in ruins. Napoleon Napoleon is an interesting character, as he starts out as being a quiet, behind the scenes stereotype, but he eventually ends up being a tyrannical and oppressive leader. He was also quite notably worse than the previous leader, of which the revolution was fought to get rid of. In the beginning, he was “not much of a talker”, and appeared to work quite well in a team. He helped
George Orwell is famous for writing satires on totalitarianism and he has written it by being objective and truthful. His attempts in uniting art and politics together in his writings was also very successful, he excelled in political journalism and he has raised the prevailing issues and oppression of the power hungry leaders very effectively in his novel Animal Farm. He was one of those writers which were against fascism and communism. The parallels between novel’s events and the events in Soviet history are impossible to ignore. Besides, Orwell’s main focus in this novel was to portray that how power corrupts a man and he has exposed this through his characters, these characters more importantly symbolize different political
In a society where an elite class has access to tools that the masses do not, this elite group of people often use these tools to dominate and oppress society. In George Orwell’s story, Animal Farm, Orwell demonstrates that education is a powerful weapon and is a tool that can be used to one’s advantage. Living in a world where power is easy to gain, the pigs quickly use education (or lack thereof) to manipulate the rest of the animals on the farm to serve themselves. This story ultimately reveals the underlying message that first, education is important to all levels of society, next, for when it is not, society is stratified, resulting in the masses suffering.
The struggle for political dominance between two leaders, Napoleon and Snowball, has led to various conflicts and violence . George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a novel that reflects the Russian Revolution and the leadership of Stalin. The pigs in the novel represent the communist leadership while the other animals symbolize the different groups of citizens during these events. The two main characters, Napoleon and Snowball, engage in a struggle for political dominance over the farm. Napoleon and Snowball are two leaders with different personalities, goals, and strategies. The two use various propaganda techniques to achieve their individual goals.
I have decided to explore the theme of how ‘Fear is a powerful motivator’. Different leaders and influential people have various ways of using fear to motivate people. Two of my texts: ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell, and ‘The Rise of Evil” directed by Christian Duguay, both show how totalitarian leaders used violence to motivate the public. The other texts: ‘Bowling for Columbine’ directed by Michael Moore, and ‘Who’s for the Game’ by Jesse Pope, both show how two different influential people motivated the public without using violence, instead creating fear using words.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm is, first and foremost, a political satire warning against the pursuit of utopian desires through unjust and oppressive means. Operating under the pretense of an animal fable, Orwell disparages the use of political power to poach personal freedom. He effectively alerts his readers to the dangerous price that can accompany the so-called “pursuit of progress”. And he illuminates how governments acting under the guise of increasing independence often do just the opposite: increase oppression and sacrifice sovereignty. While the cautionary theme Orwell provides proves widely applicable, in reality his novel focuses on one tale of totalitarian abuse: Soviet Russia. The parallels between the society Orwell presents in his Animal Farm and the Soviet Union – from the Russian revolution to Stalin’s supremacy – are seemingly endless. Manor Farm represents Tsarist Russia, Animalism compares to Stalinism, and Animal Farm, with the pig Napoleon at its helm, clearly symbolizes Communist Russia and Joseph Stalin. But Orwell does more than simply align fiction with fact. He fundamentally attacks Soviet Russia at its core. And in so doing he reveals how the Communist Party simply replaced a bad system with a worse one, overthrowing an imperial autocracy for a totalitarian dictatorship. This essay will demonstrate that Orwell’s Animal Farm is
Elie Wiesel in Night and Snowball from Animal Farm are very similar characters because they were victimized by tyrants and used as scapegoats, but they are also unique and individual characters because Elie knew he was being taken advantage of and Snowball did not. Animal Farm is written by George Orwell, and it is about a farm of animals that take over the farm. Napoleon, a large pig, slowly takes away food and supplies from the other animals until he starts walking on two feet and becomes a “human.” Because of him Snowball is expelled from the farm and acts as a scapegoat for everything that goes wrong on the farm. Night is an autobiography written by Elie Wiesel, and in it Elie tells the story of he was taken from his home and put into a concentration camp under the control of Adolf Hitler.
People respond to control and power differently for various reasons, however, one of the main reasons is based on their personality; their confidence and intelligence. In, Animal Farm by George Orwell, confidence and intelligence is a big factor for why certain animals obtained power and control and why other ones did not. People with confidence and intelligence are likely to gain most of the control and power. People with little intelligence, but lots of confidence are more likely to have some power or work underneath the leader. People with intelligence, but no confidence seem to have no power at all and shy away from it. Both intelligence and confidence are needed for someone to take total power. Therefore, the amount of confidence and intelligence a person has will decide how they respond to control and power.
George Orwell’s, Animal Farm begs the question: who is the more effective leader: Snowball or Napoleon? This allegorical novella reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution and into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. This book is about the animals of Animal Farm who rebel against man and try to live on and run the farm themselves. The pigs of the farm are the most intelligent among the animals; the boars, Snowball and Napoleon fight for a more powerful spot to lead Animal Farm. Snowball is the most effective leader because he cared more about the other animals than Napoleon.
Throughout history, there were not many laws people abided by. Karl Marx decided to come up with a theory called Marxism. Karl wanted to come up with a theory that explained the value of all commodities. Karl wanted to make a system that allowed farmers and workers to sell products for capitalists for a wage. This is comparable to the commandments that the pigs created in Animal Farm.
In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, which is an allegory of the Russian Communist revolution that occurred in the early XX century, is narrated the establishment and evolution of a totalitarian system which is ruled by the pigs, under the supreme control of Napoleon, corresponding to Stalin in the Soviet context. The initial, pure idea of “animalism” turns into a strict ruthless regime where a restricted number of animals enjoys the results of the hard work and sacrifices of others.

American Journalist Carl Hiaasen once said, “Good satire comes from anger. It comes from a sense of injustice, that there are wrongs in the world that need to be fixed (www.brainyquote.com). In George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, Orwell fuels his inspiration for the novel from his anger and dislike towards the misuse of governmental power, and the corruption that occurs when the government has too much power. The pigs in this novel represent a government 's leaders and the effects of what happens when a government gains too much power and influence over its people. The pigs, especially their leader Napoleon, misuse their power and use it to take advantage of the animal with a lower intelligence level. Orwell satirizes Napoleon by giving him the characteristics of a ruthless dictator who uses education, violence, and rhetoric to control the other animals on the farm.

The innovative dream of Animalism was not only to have a farm successfully run by animals, but to maintain a high level of living while still following certain rules to make all animals equal. In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the farm run solely by animals fails due to Napoleon’s unwillingness to follow the rules of Animalism that he himself created. The original goal of Animalism was for all animals to be successful by simply following a set of rules and guideline for how to act. Napoleon causes Animalism to fail because of his inability to accept the rules that he thinks are inconvenient to him, his self-centered nature, the fact that he turned the farm into a dictatorship and that he uses violence to control the other animals.
