George Balanchine was born in Saint Petersburg, Russian; he was the chief chorographer of the twentieth century. With invitation of Lincoln Kirstein, George Balanchine moved to America and then became designer and most influential chorographer of classical ballet in America. Choreographically, we live in the age of Balanchine because he significantly changed our ideas of ballet, and his influence continues to be felt by other choreographers. Many recent ballets might not have existed at all if Balanchine had not provided practices for them. The choreographers of the New York City Ballet, Balanchine's company, and many others all around the world are carrying on his tradition. With ballet, he overcame the pressure to join a gang like his friends. D’Amboise was able to become a well-known ballet dancer with help from his teachers. When it was time to retire from dancing, he started the National Dance Institute. This project enabled D’Amboise to influence his own students around the world. The rise of Jazz music and the swing era allowed a couple of tap dancers, commonly known as the Nicholas Brothers, to gain fame. The Nicholas Brothers questioned what dance could be by pushing the human body to the limits the likes of which had not been seen before. From her childhood in Cincinnati to her retirement from ballet in 1989, Farrell's story is truly a remarkable one. The book describes at length her time with the New York City Ballet as well as her complex relationship with the legendary Balanchine. He was born around 1526-1535 and died around 1605-1620. His dance manual "Ballarino" was published in 1581, with a subsequent edition, significantly different, Nobiltà de dame, printed in 1600 and again after his death in 1630. In the 19th century there was the pre-romantic, romantic and the classical ballets. Anthony Tudor deserves an honorable mention for his choreography and teaching. Rudolf Laban was first recognised for his dedication to supporting the movement of expressionist dance (also known as Ausdruckstanz), which had a big effect on the culture of movement as it changed the artistic stagnation of classical ballet and the maturity within the future of art. This movement arose in the 1900’s and was a protest against classical ballet which was perceived as tightly held and mechanical in fixed and conventional forms. This changed movement to become free and natural, allowing more flow and openness to arise. Rudolf Laban was considered a significant figure within this movement as he influenced the younger youth, teaching at a creative art school called Monte Verita situated in Switzerland. Laban became a key figure based off of his metaphysical ideas regarding his exploration of time and space within movement which further developed later in his career. Whether rooted deeply through generations of a family or formed through an experience, passions and fascinations are what drives us, humans, to be who we truly are. At this point in my life, I do not want to reach comfort or perfection, but rather feel composed and confident in what I chose to merge my ballet skills with. When I dance, I escape reality and feel a pure exhilaration.This sensation shapes my curiosity and interest in the human anatomy. From the elements that make it up to ways in which people individually move their bodies, the human body is absolutely fascinating. Specifically, I am passionate about teaching ballet to younger students. By introducing ballet to kids early on, they will experience the same joy almost all dancers feel for a longer period of time. When I’m dancing I’m challenging your mind, releasing endorphins, and working hard. I am also eager to own my own business linked with teaching that will provide people with affordable dance equipment, and even more crucial, advice on what suits each person's personal needs. I know as I grow old my body will not be as capable as it once was, but I’m dedicated to spreading my appreciation of ballet to others. Overall, my passion for ballet and how I can utilize it to positively impact society as an entrepreneur has developed through the inspiration of my grandparents, the creativity of my former dance teachers, and my interest in the human bodies relation to ballet.
Instead, he created something, which possibly is greater than the Ballet Russe was, the New York City Ballet and the America School of Ballet. At the time we covered this information I did not see a possible connection that had with my life. It was just a simply fact of life, he left the Ballet Russe and created his own world renowned ballet company, but looking back in a way all of the students in this class along with thousands of others are Balanchine in a way. After all, we all left what we were accustomed to, our homes, families, friends, and high school. To come to a university. No one know what the outcome will be, but if we all have the vision and innovation that Balanchine had there is not a doubt in my mind that we too, all the freshman on campus, will be able to achieve success. Of course, our form of success will probably fade with the years, unlike Balanchine’s, but we can all enjoy the accomplishment like Balanchine had to feel with the New York City Ballet. Like mentioned earlier, Balanchine’s name will forever be tied to ballet, even the contemporary styles that we studied later in the semester.
