New Athens New Athens is a thoroughly planned island city in the Adriatic Sea, with equidistant historic landmarks of Mainland Greece, the birthplace of democracy, and Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance. About 600,000 residents inhabit our city of mild winters and warm summers, typical of a Mediterranean climate. Our city includes an inviting, sandy coastline, with leafy green forests speckled throughout the central region of the island, while a magnificent volcano stands proudly near the northern coast. These features lend themselves to tourism, one of our city’s primary industries and sources of income. In addition to tourism, a large-scale, commercial aquaponics farming facility serves as a means of economic activity and growth, …show more content…
Carved into the side of this volcano is an amphitheater where events such as concerts, plays, and old movie screenings are held. Before this amphitheater was created, the volcano was essentially a mountain at the center of our island. Many people thought that all it did was take up space, so our city automation engineers decided to make it into a public space. They used high-pressure water jets and 3-D modeling software to carve out the amphitheater. The water doubled as both a carving tool and a cooling agent, and only a little was needed since it is reusable. The water was also taken from the nearby ocean and after it was used it was filtered of harmful minerals and put back, leaving little to no impact on the environment. This place gives citizens an opportunity to socialize and interact with each other while at these events. This amphitheater uses state of the art insulation technology to keep the seats and stage …show more content…
Our experts suggested Aquaponics. So, we converted an old, dilapidated warehouse -- an area beginning to see a rise in crime -- into an indoor aquaponics gardening facility. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system where fish waste (ammonia) is converted into nutrients and sent to plants that grow three times faster than soil-based systems. And plants pay for the nutrients by cleaning the water for the fish, resulting in both happy plants and happy fish. Furthermore, the fish can be eaten after the cycle, and the organic plants could be harvested. This method is also better because of land consumptions and time to grow. Up to four aquaponic plants can be grown in an area that could only fit one plant when dumped in regular soil. Plus, plants grow four times faster than traditional methods. This closed loop system allows us to get food without any negative pollutants. Rather than keep it just a farm to grow food products, we saw an opportunity to boost our island’s tourism by renovating the warehouse into an aquaponics aquarium. This way, tourists and locals alike can pay to walk through and see fish swimming around in enormous
Ancient Athens was built on a democratic government. A democracy is when a government allows all of its people, no matter what class and how wealthy they are, to vote and agree on their own laws. There are many documents and resources that can prove that Ancient Athens was truly built to be a democratic government.
With a minimal initial investment of $100,000 and a single acre of level ground, a self-sustaining aquaponics based growing operation can be established and become profitably within 6 months. Through continuous year round vegetable and fish production, this operation can conservatively generate $250,000 in annual revenue starting in the very first year. While the initial investment in materials and equipment is steep, the output of this system rapidly accelerates to full potential and costs very little to maintain on an annual basis. The versatility of this system allows for the
Let’s take a journey back in time! We are always advancing in our thoughts and the ways we do things. What better way to get a glimpse into the past by creating a time capsule? Between 1763 and 1775 tension between the American colonies and Great Britain eventually erupted into war. I have included five artifacts to better understand the historical events of this time period. They include a map of the proclamation line of 1763, wampum belt, a teapot, cartoon about the stamp act, and Tricorn hat.
Ancient Athens (800 B.C. - 300 B.C.) is not a democracy. A democracy is a government controlled by the population, whereas the Athenian government was being controlled by only male citizens. According to Doc D, the ancient Athens were in fact an oligarchy, a government ruled by male citizens. The majority of the population does not vote in the Athenian politics.
How did people in Athens and Sparta obtain the right to participate in public life and make decisions affecting the community?
When evaluating the government of ancient Athens, some might say that it was a democracy, however, it can be better described as an oligarchy: a form of government in which a small group of people has the power and control (Doc. D by Mogens Herman Hansen). A democracy takes all the citizens’ opinions and thoughts into account, unlike an oligarchy that only takes the male citizens’ opinions and thoughts into account. Thus, Athens is more similar to an oligarchy than a democracy. The people of Athens also decide as a whole what the best government for their city-state was, as opposed to a democracy where the people elect representatives to make decisions for them and their city-state. Athens could be seen as not a true democracy because of the lack of basic democratic rules and methods such as what they define democracy as, who is able to vote, and how they vote.
Democracy is a system of government where the people equally run a country. For example, America practices a form of government where the people have the right to elect those who are in power when they become eighteen years of age. In addition, a citizen of this country can practice a religion of their choice along with several other freedoms. In my opinion, Athens was not a democratic society by today’s standards.
Athens was a great city of the Fifth century from Greece. They flourished during that time and were at the height of their power. They were also a very smart people, and some of their ideas have lasted all the way until present day. Perhaps one of the most important is democracy. Athens is one of the earliest civilizations that use this form of government and it nearly lasted two hundred years. Its hard to become as powerful as Athens did without making enemies or people that you rubbed the wrong way. Some people will say that Athens was a just civilization and others will say that they just looked out for themselves and attacked whoever would be of benefit to them. I think that Athens was a just civilization, especially of their time, nobody is perfect.
Athens population is 119,980 and the date founded is Dec 5,1801. Athens is also located in the North East Piedmont area. Athens is the 4th largest city in GA and started off as a trading settlement called Cedar Shoals in the 1700s. Athens is near the Oconee River and is also named after Elijah Clarke. The Industry rapidly grew, primarily of cotton, brick works, textile mills, and railroad transportation. Athens street Railway Company was founded in
In historic times, there existed a divergent people, the Greek way of life was one of the classical civilizations which is considered the melting pot of politics, poetry, art and military of ancient times. Ancient Greece was constructed of a variety of villages that were known as city-states; the aforementioned city-states existed within the known territories, however each of these city-states had their own culture, values and customs. Various city-states cooperated with one another, however they also had a history of fighting with one another, but the most powerful city-states were considered: Sparta and Athens. The Athenians were known for political practices and culture, whereas Sparta was famously known for its disciplined military and vast weaponry. The predominant goal for the Spartan Empire was to establish an elite state of hoplites (infantrymen), while the supreme ambition for the Athenians was to construct a society of well-balanced attributes. Although Sparta and Athens both operated their societies in a different manner, there were few similarities that could be seen in certain aspects of their city-states.
If you lived in Athens and if you were to be a man you would get lots of perks. Like how you get a lot more freedom than in Sparta. You also get to go to the agora and talk about politics and buy good for your family. I would rather live in Athens than in Sparta because men get to have a say in democracy, get to go to parties and banquets, attend plays, also wear fashionable clothes, get to have architecture and art, and they are well educated. One reason why I would want to live in Athens instead of Sparta is all the art and architecture.
The strategy element of Athens military was a large part of why they won the battles they did. The flankers served as a very viable asset, and their army was stronger because of it. With their tactic of ambush, they defeated the Persians, proving they had a better strategy by attacking before the Persians were ready. The Persian idea of battle also worked, and had some civilizations surrendering before the battle even began. The negative side to this was if there were civilizations like Athens, who did not care about how many soldiers each army had, the army would still have to fight another battle.
How much success can a city have when they are very limited on resources from the land they roam? In the beginning of Humans are their success dependent entirely on their land. If they lived on prosperous land where farming was easy, they succeeded in their evolution. For those who lived on rocky terrains or dry lands had a different outcome, they struggled very much to survive. So how is it that poleis such as Athens and Sparta were so great and powerful when they didn't live on land favorable for cultivation?
Understanding the Role of Power in Athenian Justice and Morality In the era of the Peloponnesian War, Athens commits numerous heinous acts to its subordinate city-states: from the siege of Melos to the slaughter at Corcyra, Athens in many cases refuses to show any sign of mercy. The Athenians’ willingness to conduct these actions largely stems from a mindset which treats morality, justice, and power as one and the same. While this mindset is, to an extent, innate to human nature and the mentality of warfare in general, it is taken further than what would be considered normal in the case of the Athenians. Particularly, Athens justifies its actions with a mentality which stems largely from their capitalistic regard to power and hypocritical
The utilization of nature has increased due to human amendments of trails and parks. Mackinac Island, a charming tourist island in Michigan, boasts a system of trails and amenities that have attracted many people to get out in nature. Visitors enjoy the beauty of the area, bicycling alongside the shore, hiking around historic sites, and riding horses through the woods. Because
