In the Roman Republic they were kind of a democratic because anyone who was in the democratic was allowed to vote. Athens was not truly a democracy. The definition of democracy states that it is a system of government by the whole population. In ancient Athens the only people that were eligible to make decisions were citizen men. Women did not have the right to vote which contradicts the definitions of democracy. Only twelve percent of the Athens population were able to vote meaning that eighty-eight percent were left powerless. Metics were not even eligible to vote and they were a key part of Athens economy.

What is democracy? Historians have, for a long time, kept this question in mind as they studied the methods and laws of the Ancient Athenians. After studying the given evidence it can be determined that Ancient Athens was not truly democratic.

Democracy is a “Government by the people”, Democracy was a central part of Athenian society and everyday life. The Athenian government held Ekklesia or assembly where citizens could go to vote on laws, issues and practically everything affecting Athenian life. For this assignment, I actually found this somewhat difficult to fully observe and make a full analysis based on what I saw for a period of time. Specifically, my experiment was conducted in Athens, Georgia where I found a very diverse population ranging from fraternity and sorority college students to public housing on the outskirts of downtown Athens. This general location has every type of social system and research data depends significantly on time and place of where it’s oversaw. In my observation, I came across two individuals that played different roles within society in downtown Athens where they are both accepted by society, but have a different outcome.

The video was about the golden age of the Athens. The video start on the year 490 B.C and talks about the people in a small state name Athens establishing democracy for the first time. Athens being a democratic Free State was gaining power, the king of the Prussian empire wasn’t pleased with this news. The Prussian invaded the Athens to start the being of a war that would last many years to come. Knowinf that the Prussians where coming Pheidippides ran 140 miles in 2 days to seek help from Sparta but they turn him away.
