A genre is a form of communication such as writing, a poster, or a blog within a particular discipline. Genre analysis provides better understanding of how language is used within a significant discourse community, and is a form of applied linguistics in which draws on linguistic and sociolinguistic theory to clarify the nature of language use and language learning in an education setting. In this paper, I will be analyzing some scientific abstracts for the engineering discourse community. The analyzation will be focusing more on research articles, thesis, reviews, conference proceeding, and engineering journals in electrical engineering. They both have one thing in common which is an abstract. An abstract is a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference …show more content…
For the IEE papers, it was written and research performed by engineers. They have conducted a thorough review of community literature resources, and used them to back up their arguments. Research methodologies used are mentioned in both abstract and introduction sections to avoid fabrications. The hypothesis of the researches are linked directly with the evidences that have already known within the community. Although, more often the hypothesis might have been supported by other evidence in the literature, any new revelations are essential in providing a strong foundation upon which the next, higher level queries can be explored. It requires a well-designed set of experiments, carefully and methodically implemented, analyzed in the most proper way, and explained in adequate details so that it can be reused. The scientific advancement depends on such rigorous work, and is an ideal in the community, as it would generate a literature of high integrity that stands up over time and provides real value to the
In “Materiality and Genre in the Study of Discourse Communities,” authors Amy Devitt, Anis Bawarshi, and Mary Reiff discuss genre in discourse communities. The article is pretty much broken into three different parts with each author writing about another genre. Amy Devitt discusses jury instruction which basically just means that she wrote about how jurors are not able to grasp the genre of jury instruction like lawyers are able to which means they are not able to make a good verdict for defendants. Anis Bawarshi discusses the medical field and the language there. He said that only people familiar with medicine relate and honestly understand what is going on when people talk about medicine. Then lastly, Mary Reiff talked about ethnography
or genre of the text and purpose (Hill, 2012, p. 87) this would help John in the role of text
Charles Bazerman in his work Speech Acts, Genres, and Activity System: How Text Organize and People, explains that genre systems are, “text is embedded within structured social activities and depends on previous texts that influence the social activity and organization” (Bazerman
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, . . . do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”(U.S. Constitution.) The very first paragraph of the United States Constitution leaves the reader feeling inspired, hopeful, and patriotic. The introduction truly is a solid introduction as it not only engages the reader with a hook, but also provides a list of the objectives they hope to accomplish through their document. As for the objectives I hope to accomplish through this document; I hope to provide a thoughtful and logical review of Article I of the United States Constitution from the perspective of a typical American high school student.
An abstract is a brief summary—usually about 100 to 120 words—written by the essay writer that describes the main idea, and sometimes the purpose, of the paper. When you begin your research, many scholarly articles may include an abstract. These brief summaries can help readers decide if the article is worth reading or if addresses the research question, not just the topic, one is investigating.
Coming into Writing 39B I did not know what to expect of the western genre, but I became eager to learn more about the genre as I was exposed to the films. During the second lecture, I felt as though I knew very little about the concept so I became too shy to discuss the character traits. That later changed when a peer of mine described a cowboy’s physical and metaphorical traits. That provoked a flashbulb memory to occur from when I was a child. I remembered always walking into my mother’s room and seeing her watching old western style, black and white movies that were very comical to me but to her they were very interesting. I would always ask her why she watched such boring, terribly directed movies and she would simply respond, “This is
The second genre convention that the author used was structure. For a scientific journal article, the structure usually contains different sections such as an introduction, material/methods, data, results, and a conclusion. The purpose of having this structure is to organize the information, and to make it easier to identify for readers. In my article, the article has the same structure, but it does not have the same sections that were listed above. Instead, it have sections such as a problem setting, research objective, key search finding, and a conclusion. The problem setting section provided a brief introduction of the problem regarding to genetically modified organisms. For that section, it is stated that genetically modified organisms
1. What is the genre of DALLAS? How many acts are there in this episode? When does each act end?
Social commentary draws attention the beautiful and grotesque parts of our world usually through works of fiction. The short story, “The Paper Menagerie” by Ken Liu was published in 2011 does just that. It focuses on the life of Jack, his life brightened by the pieces of origami animals his mother makes him, each taking a life of their own in his world. It is not until he starts playing with a boy in his neighbourhood, does he realize that he is different. He is not accustomed to the western culture like his peers are because he has grown up in a more Chinese household.
Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to categorize films. Genre are dependent on different factors such as who the director is, story line, and audience expectations (Azia, n.d). Genres are types or categories and genre films that are usually recognizable as part of a certain genre (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, 2014, section 4.1). To better understand genre there are several examples to look at. When watching a fantasy film we know that within the movie we will expect to see unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters or settings often overlapping with various other genres (GoodyKoontz, 2014).
The musical film has always held a special place for me. From my time as a drama student in high school, my eyes have been opened to the amazing world of the musical and especially the musical film. The musical film is a film genre in which the characters sing songs that are integrated into the overall story. Since musicals first began in theaters, musical films usually contain similar elements. These elements often simulate that there is a live audience watching. In a sense, the film viewers become the audience members, at a theater production, as the actor performs directly to them. Due to the popularity of musicals in the theater, the style was quickly brought over into film. In 1927, the musical film genre began
No matter which type of job or career the author is looking for, a resume is a great first step. Generally, resumes are built and created in early adulthood by the author them self. There are a few things that can be assumed about the authors. First, they are middle to upper class individuals who like to show off their own personal qualifications, education, and academic and professional experiences they have obtained throughout their life. The audience in which will be looking over these resumes could be a pretty broad range generally speaking, but for the most part whoever the author is submitting the resume to will be the intended audience for this genre. I think it is safe to say this genre will be around for many years to come,
What has influenced a crossroad in two of music’s biggest genres Country, Pop? In this paper I’m going to state and defend my position on why I think it’s good for both genres. I will also give reasons on why people believe “Hick Hop’ is bad for both cultures.
As the initial step, taking after a comparative theoretical model (Hasan, 1984), Paltridge (1993) as cited in (Naderi 2012) explored the rhetorical structure of the Introduction sections of research articles taken from the most cited specialized journals, investigating the likelihood of disciplinary variety crosswise over three fields including environmental studies, linguistics and geography. He showed no confirmation of significant disciplinary difference in his study. Nonetheless, he found that the GSP of this genre consists of the following structural elements: Background Information, Indicating a Gap, Rationale for Study, Previous Research, Justification for Study, Purpose of Study, Question Raising and Context of Study. According to the
A categorical analysis is when you use categorical variables that are qualitative in nature and absent of any measurement to draw conclusions, to make predictions, or to make business decisions based from the gathered data (Mirabella, 2011). Based on the data set provided in the sample, I conducted an analysis on the categorical variables regarding their gender, major, if employed and whether they work fulltime or not. I used the data to come to a few conclusions. I found that male students were more indecisive on a major compared to the women. Thirty five percent of the males were listed to have no major and only fifteen percent of the females were without a major. Out of all the students, Leadership was the most selected major at 35%
