Of all of the gun-related deaths in America, over 60% are suicides. As this problem continues to increase, we must ask ourselves why this is the case. Could it be that Americans have unprecedented access to firearms? Could it be that we are in desperate need of major mental healthcare reform (Sanger-Katz)? Perhaps, or perhaps not. For you see, there is a sinister, underlying root to the problem that has yet to be discussed in mainstream conversation. As General Mills sales increase, suicides by gunshot increase; therefore America’s suicide problem is caused by its love of cereal and other General Mills products (Tyler Vigen). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the second leading cause of death for …show more content…
The company was founded by a man who not only is not a general, but whose last name was not “Mills”, Cadwallader Washburn. Interestingly enough, the word “cad” is right in his first name. What would later be known as General Mills was founded in 1866, a year after the death of Abraham Lincoln. There is no proof that Cadwallader Washburn was the assassin, unless, of course, you would consider the fact that he attended Lincoln’s 1861 inauguration with five of his brothers, one being Lincoln’s campaign biographer (General Mills: 150 Years of Passionately Making Food That People Love). All that can be stated is that we do not know of Washburn’s alibi on the night of the assassination, and an actor, of all people, John Wilkes Booth conveniently took the blame. While the trigger happy history of the company would seem damning enough, there is actual numerical data supporting General Mills’ responsibility on firearm suicides. The year 2008 had sales of $13.548 billion, 2009 had sales of $14.556 billion, and 2010 had sales of $14.636 billion, as illustrated in Figure 2 …show more content…
For example, suicide attempts most frequently occur after suicidal thoughts. Guns do not face as heavy regulation in the United States as they do in many other Western countries. They are in plentiful supply. When the ready availability of guns is met with suicidal impulse, suicides are much more likely to be executed effectively (Sanger-Katz). While no study has confirmed that suicidal thoughts increase dramatically after consuming General Mills products, the data presented in Figure 3 suggests more than a real study ever could. Likewise, no study has been made establishing long-term effects of consuming General Mills products and the likelihood of mental illness. What this could mean is that mental illness might be directly caused by consuming General Mills products, coupled with access to firearms, leading to suicide. Whether it is a chemical imbalance in General Mills products that affect the brain, or the inferiority of their products spiraling consumers into depression, one thing is certain: General Mills has blood on its
Many teenagers and even adults feel worthless and depressed and give up on life. Instead of taking action and getting help to solve their life problems, these people choose to commit suicide. There are about 30,000 suicide deaths per year. This number is outrageously high. One out of every 45 attempts of suicide actually succeeds. Whether suicide attempters succeed or fail, all depends on how easy it is for them to get the resources they want to use for this task, especially firearms. Deborah Azrael, a research associate at Harvard’s Research Center, found that when guns were predominant in a state, suicide rates were higher. The inverse of this statement was also correct, in states where guns were not prevalent, suicide rates were lower. Many lives would be saved, many suicides would be prevented, and many families would be able to avoid heartbreak and despair, if firearms were not accessible in the United
The suicide worries the authors. Suicide is a cause of death for college students. The authors conces is that the suicide rate can easily increase at the time when the students get easy access to the guns. Skorton and
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has published a fact sheet of statistics on suicide in the United States. In 2007, it is reported that suicide was the tenth leading cause of death. Furthermore, for every suicide committed, eleven were attempted. A total of 34,598 deaths occurred from suicide with an overall rate of 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. (NIMH, 2010). Risk factors were also noted on this report and listed “depression and other mental disorders, or a substance abuse disorder (often in combination with other mental disorders). More than ninety percent of people who die by suicide have these risk factors (NIMH, 2010).”
Suicide is the 6th leading cause of death for 5-14 y/o and 3rd leading cause of death for 15-24 y/o
Overall the suicide rate is extremely high. It is not the most sought after death, but it is the most efficient. I have known many people over my short 16 years of life who have wanted to kill themselves. I’ve been in the position to end my life many times, had best friends die, and watched them die. It is a horrible tragedy; suicide is a sorrowful disaster that needs to be addressed.
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death. At least 44,193 people by suicide every year. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has given more than $4 million in grants toward research for suicide prevention. It has reached more
In the United States handguns are the most common means of suicide. The World Health Organization identifies suicide as a serious public health concern. People experiencing social difficulties may result in ending their lives using a firearm at their disposition. People experiencing psychological disorders due to illness or alcohol and drug abuse are also highly likely to commit suicide using a handgun. A study in northeastern Unites State established that 91% of suicide attempts by firearms resulted in death. Males are more likely to commit suicide using firearms. It is not uncommon to hear of cases where an entire family is eliminated by the gun. A husband or wife shooting their partner and children and then commits suicide. Guns can be fatally dangerous in the wrong
A shocking 11% of teenagers suffer from depression in the US, with 14% having suicidal thoughts and 7% attempting it. By having easy to access guns, teenagers have a much higher chance of finding and using a gun on themselves. When asked, the majority of people who were about to commit suicide had second thoughts after being unable to find an easy access method that didn’t require much thought or lengthy pain, for example hanging themselves. Comparing the percentage of suicide by guns to Australia, a country that changed their regulations on guns in the last twenty years and now has a 35% decrease in gun suicide since this law change presents the clear evidence that restricting guns will reduce the number of suicides
Another consideration is whether firearm violence is more a matter of harm to self or others. Suicides account for 61 % of all firearm fatalities in the United States in 2010 as recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (qtd. In Bowen, Injury 2015). In spite of such evidence, Gallup polling data from 2013 showed that 48 % of adult Americans blame the mental health system a great deal for mass shootings in the United States, whereas fewer 40 % blame easy access to guns; an inadequate mental health system is perceived as the top cause of mass shootings (qtd. In Bowen, Saad 2013).

There was no parallel increase in mortality from causes other than guns, suggesting that other lethal weapons were not being used as substitutes. Other data also suggest that suicide rates depend on the availability of handguns. In particular, states with relatively stringent handgun laws have lower suicide rates (Block 23).
Suicide was by far the greatest number of deaths from firearms. According to the CDC of the total 33,594 deaths from firearms in 2014 over 64% of the deaths from firearms were a result of suicide (Kochanek, Murphy, Xu, Tejada-Vera 2014). While it is tragic to know that means the other 36% were killed by having a firearm turned on them it still shows that the dangers of firearms lies mainly in the hands of someone who has a mental illness. Even if we assume all other deaths were from people who had no form of mental illness that is over 20,000 people who if mental illness did not exist or even just better treated, would still be alive today. In order to treat mental illness however, we must be able to distinguish what is and is not a mental illness. For the purpose of this article a mental illness is; any disease or disorder that is clinically recognized and causes some sort of distress. Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year (Martinelli., Binney, & Kaye 2014). Considering that most gun deaths are caused by suicide, it is understandable to assume that these people were
Attention Getter: Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. surpassed by accidents and homicide. (According to Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention)
Relevance Statement: According to Medical Author: Roxanne Dryden-Edwards, Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In a national survey of high school students, nearly 20% of teens thought about attempting suicide, and more than 8% made a suicide attempt. Over half of all kids who suffer from depression will eventually attempt suicide at least once, and over 7% will die as a result.
Suicide is currently the 10th leading cause of death in the United States (Suicide and Self-Inflicted Injury, 2017). On average, 121 Americans complete suicide each day (CDC Fatal Injuries Report 2015, 2015). The American people are living longer with advances to medical care and technology, yet suicide rates continue to rise. According to the CDC, suicide rates have increased by 24% from the year 1999 to 2014 (Curtain, Warner & Hedegaard, 2016). Consequently, the suicide epidemic continues to grow with no clear path to prevention. This literature review was conducted using the Robert Morris University Library online databases. Databases accessed include PubMed…………., from the years 2000 to 2017. Overall, most the articles obtained are
