In William Shakespeare’s play Anthony and Cleopatra, Anthony is from the west while Cleopatra is from the east, resulting in a complex and unusual relationship. The principles of east and west are deeply woven into the play. The west, represented by Rome, values the traditional and those who are “brave” and “noble” (Shakespeare 1994: 297). The east, on the other hand, is exotic, having “strange serpents” (Shakespeare 1994: 213), and sexualized, with a queen who can control men’s hearts “by th’strings” (Shakespeare 1994: 246). Introduced by eastern attributes, this sexual theme is pursued throughout the play. For instance, the “sword” (Shakespeare 1994: 199) is commonly used to represent a phallus. I will examine these sexual themes …show more content…
Thus, their conquest of the east is more traditional, being achieved with military force. Its effectiveness is without question. Many Egyptians reference Roman gods and goddesses throughout the play, displaying Rome’s success in its conquest of Egypt. Conversely, the east is markedly sexualized and exotic, yet it mounts its own conquest of the west with the captivation the Romans have for its features. At Pompey’s party, the Roman guests become enthralled with the many exotic Egyptian characteristics, discussing “a serpent of Egypt” and “Ptolemies’ pyramises” (Shakespeare 1994: 213). This is one of the ways the theme of east and west has such a great effect on the play. Not only does the east take Anthony’s attention, but many of his Roman associates. Additionally, their party more closely resembles an Egyptian celebration, many getting very drunk. It is this way that the east has its own conquest of the west, not it physical land, but in stories and customs. To those from the west, this new culture can be tempting. At the party, many men, such as Caesar, make fools of themselves. Of course, Anthony is one who is most affected by eastern charm. Exposure to this culture influences caused many of the Roman men to behave abnormally, thus it is unsurprising that Anthony goes against his principles when he is with Cleopatra. My point is not that the influence of the east is so strong that it makes Anthony unable to control his behavior, only that it is so
Similar to the 1963 film Cleopatra, in Plutarch's The Life of Antony, sexism is maintained in the passage and compatible with its message. Through the author's portrayal of Cleopatra and Antony, he spreads the message that obsession with power is bad and the idea that manipulation and attempts at domination are signs of a bad ruler. Sexism is compatible with such messages because as indicated by Plutarch, Cleopatra utilizes sexist expectations of women in order to manipulate Antony through her aspirations of domination. Therefore, similar to the films Cleopatra and Quo Vadis, because Cleopatra is unsuccessful as she commits suicide in the end and is found "lying dead upon a golden couch," as well as is portrayed as an immoral ruler in
Portia, Brutus’s wife, is a great example of a character who merely struggles to free herself. She is literally under the power of Brutus. In the play Julius Caesar, women are looked down upon. They are looked at and treated differently from men. Portia has an immense concern for gender roles. Portia feels as if she is Brutus’s “harlot” [prostitute] and not his wife. She believes that as a married couple they should not keep secrets from each other. “Within the bond of marriage, tell me, Brutus, Is it accepted I should know no secrets? That appertains to you? To keep with you at meals, comfort your bed, and talk to you sometimes?” (II.ii.275-276, 302-307). During the time of Julius Caesar women have an utterly different view compared

How did Cleopatra rise to and maintain her power? Not much is known about her life since she lived so long ago, but what is known is enough to piece together some of her life story. Cleopatra was a strong and intelligent woman who made it through all the struggle and strife of the ancient world until it became too much for her. Cleopatra’s reign began and ended with tragedy, but was maintained by exploited love connections.
The Elizabethan era was one of the worst times in history for women. They were constantly demonized and ordered around like servants just because of their gender, which resulted in rather cruel gender roles being forced upon them. These gender roles can be seen in William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” from the treatment of the characters Gertrude and Ophelia, because they are constantly being vilified and underestimated, and are seen as tools to help the men of the play achieve their goals. By analysing the treatment of the women in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”, it is easy to determine that in Elizabethan times, people believed that women were not on the same moral plane as men, making them therefore less accountable for their actions, that they were corruptive, mentally weak, and in need of a man’s control, and that they were possessions of men.
Throughout history, people often read about tenacious men and all of their achievements. Many forget that women have accomplished a significant number of deeds as well, therefore making it seem like men are more superior. Women all around the world have been perceived differently depending on the time period, location, social status or culture. Looking at views of women from the past is important to remind mankind how equally important woman’s job is in society.
Such an assertion--that the danger of Cleopatra's sexuality lies in her Egyptian surroundings--requires further detail here. The Orient represented a strange, but terrifyingly fascinating world to the Elizabethans. While it was decidedly inferior and politically weak, the Orient also held a dangerous mystique. As Lucy Hughes-Hallett attests, poets, playwrights, historians and artists have found the idea of Cleopatra's foreignness, or otherness, a suitable method by which to explain away her dangerous sexuality. In other words, the fact that Cleopatra effectively seduced and influenced two powerful Roman men baffled Western thinkers who could only explain it by attributing it to her foreignness or "otherness." Not surprisingly, Shakespeare succumbs to a similar artistic temptation. In the first ten lines of the play, the surrender of Roman dignity to Egyptian passion is made clear. Philo regretfully tells Demetrius how
Shakespeare is known for his unjust portrayal of women in his arts. Women are usually sub characters who as they might bring importance to the story they are repressed by the male characters within the play. Not only does Shakespeare improperly portray the strength of women he also is using the stereotypical characteristics of women to show “weakness” within the male characters of the play. In the play “Julius Caesar” Shakespeare’s sexist ideas were not an attempt to keep the story with its historical times, his degrading of women was what he himself witnessed within the Elizabethan era.

Becoming president of my school’s Minority Association of Pre-Medical/Health Students (MAPS), One Step Before (OSB), has truly helped me to develop my skills for supporting and leading others. Because I had so much help along the way, I knew that I could never be satisfied with my own successes if I did not help someone along the way.

Shelia Ager’s article, Marriage or mirage? The Phantom Wedding of Cleopatra and Antony, looks to discuss any evidence for a wedding between Cleopatra VII and Marc Antony and conclude whether this event really happened or if it is a myth. Cleopatra and Marc Antony famously had an affair, resulting in children. They lived and planned with one another, presenting themselves as a couple. They attempted to conquer land with one another, establishing themselves and their children as the rulers of multiple kingdoms. However, there are disputes over whether a legal marriage or even a wedding occurred between them. There are no explicit records from ancient authors about a marriage, and with two highly public figures records should exist. Ager makes
The following study is based on the plays Antony and Cleopatra which is written by William Shakespeare and All for Love which is written by John Dryden. Both writers are the most prominent playwrights in the history of English literature. We can see that both writers through their respective works have focused on the relationship between two prominent characters of the ancient world- Marc Antony, who was a Roman ruler and Cleopatra- who was considered the most beautiful woman in the world and who was also the queen of Egypt.
All organizations are challenged by a plethora of issues, which causes these corporation to evaluate the re-engineering of their corporation’s strategy. These issues are most commonly related to environmental factors and other factors such as the availability of resources. Ghoshal, & Bartlett (2000) argued that, “for every successful corporate transformation, there is at least one equally prominent failure” (p. 49). Therefore, most corporations are paralyzed by contingencies that inhibit their yielding of high revenues. The challenges facing Executive Managers of offsetting losses against profits, more than they report yielding high profits, would be detrimental to the
William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy, of Antony, and Cleopatra written between 1606 and 1607, is a play filled with political intrigue, power struggles, war and its consequences, and the plight of two desperately impassioned lovers. The play has at times even been seen as “The Greatest Love Story Ever Told”; however, rather than a passionate love affair between each other, the characters in the play appear to have a love affair with power(). This love affair with power is mistaken for an infatuation with each other, thus destroying a great Roman leader and a noble Egyptian queen. The argument put forward in this essay is that the main characters of the play Mark Antony and Cleopatra are both in love with power; therefore the central theme to the play
