Edwards instills fear in his congregation by threatening the wrath of God and what will happen if one does not omit their lives to Him. “So that thus it is, that natural men’ are held in the hand god over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it;” (102). Here Edwards uses sharp descriptions to show his congregation that any wrong move can put one in Hell, promoting the practice of religion, more specifically; his church. Edwards also writes and speaks very poetically in such a way that his sermons are delivered with an intense amount of imagery that it seems as if those in attendance are watching a movie. Comparing the earth to God’s hand and the mention of God’s wrath being a loaded bow that is ready to rain down on sinners at any moment, helps add the the fear and the image. Another way Edwards creates his atmosphere is by referring to the mass in front of him as ‘you’. Our focus could be on God’s power and how to appease him for humanities sinful nature, like in the age of the Puritans. They believed that God chose specific people to be truly holy by God, that’s the reason they left the church in England because they believed it to be run by unholy people.

Edwards’s purpose is to awaken audiences to the horrific reality that he believed awaited them should they continue life without devotion to Christ. He adopts an ominous tone with a sense of urgency in order to spread fear in the minds of puritans so that they may repent for their sins and turn to God before it is too late for them. Edwards opens his sermon to the puritans by stating, “So that thus it is that natural men are held in the hand of God; over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit and are already sentenced to it.”
In the 1600’s the Puritans were the main religious group of that time period and they had very strong ideals on how religion and government should go together. Jonathan Edwards, who shared many of their ideals, preached a sermon called, “ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and it had a very big impact on the congregation. Nathaniel Hawthorne, although he was a writer in the 1800’s, he was fascinated with the Puritans and their lifestyles and wrote a short story called, “ The Minister’s Black Veil.” Both authors use specific details, tone, and imagery to convey their meaning and style, Edwards harsh and accusatory style was more effective than Hawthorne’s melancholy and mysterious style because Edwards helps the reader understand the effects sin can have in one’s life.

When Edwards was writing his sermon he was beginning to witness deterioration in the original puritan communities. He felt that the religious ideals first established by his predecessor Winthrop were slipping among the puritans. Edwards wanted to have an impact on his readers. To him it was more effective using scare tactics over positive encouragement to discuss proper conduct and God’s wrath. Edwards wanted to make sure the members of puritan society understood just how important their behavior and conduct while on earth was. He wrote about the certain punishments that awaited in hell for those who did not properly adhere to the puritan religious values. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is full of strong and vivid images of hell, comparing hell to a pit of fire and depicts how “Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering” (Edwards). “I’m a devil worshiper” is the very first line as Fetty Wap begins rapping in his song, “679.” In a way, this statement is very similar to Jonathan Edwards writings because both speakers had very unconventional views for their respective times. In today's world, Fetty Wap’s satanic beliefs aren’t generally accepted by other people; this is similar to Edwards views because he opposed the stereotypical loving image of God by warning others of his potential destruction and power. The people of Salem find themselves immersed in a wave of hysteria and paranoia as anyone around them could be the Devil’s man. More than two centuries later, the situation repeats itself; the Devil adopts a new name. In both “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, by Jonathan Edwards, and “The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller, the authors rely heavily on fear and persuasion to convey their messages. However, while Edwards uses primarily imagery to achieve his goals, “The Crucible” uses fear and persuasion as symbols and allegories to the 1950’s Red Scare.
Edwards' creative choice of words that he uses describes the power of God and the terrible Hell awaiting sinners. These words easily infiltrate into the minds of his congregation and frighten them beyond belief. These choices of words and his use of such vivid images are mostly successful in their intent, to scare and put fear into his audience. Edwards held his audience locked up with his promises of eternal damnation if proper steps were not taken. The congregation felt the intense impact of his rhetorical strategies and lived on the fear of the power of God. In this way, he was able to keep his followers from sin and away from the fiery pits of Hell.

In his sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," the congregation has the qualities of narrow-minded and unaware followers of Gods army seeming to not know the consequence for reversion—spiritual death. The congregation's belief in God illustrates Edwards theme, straying from God's grace can happen, but as Christians, backsliding should be recognized, and one should continue towards the path of righteous. I said, ‘it’s too late for me.’” These dark lyrics in the song, “Ordinary Life” by The Weeknd contradict the general Christian concept of forgiveness. Because The Weeknd feels he has strayed so far from God he believes he can not be forgiven, even though the Christian Church teaches that you can always repent your sins to God and be forgiven. This is similar to Jonathan Edwards views on God at the time because he opposed the idea of God being a loving savior, and said he was capable of mass destruction with his ultimate power.
