Freshmen Time Capsule Letter

I am excited to be one of the candidates for the 2017-2018 National Junior Honor Society. I understand that the National Junior Honor Society is for students who demonstrate exemplary scholarship, citizenship, service, leadership, and character. I believe that I have maintained a grade point average of 3.55 or higher and have shown all of the five given standards of the National Junior Honor Society. I believe that my involvement with the National Junior Honor Society will help me to prepare my future as a leader, character role model, and good citizen.

This year I have learned a lot from College Writing, this class has taught me a lot about my own writing and what makes a good essay. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer and as a person throughout the course. In this reflection of the past semester I will be going through my past papers and talk about what I liked and how I could’ve made them better. I will also be going through the activities that have shaped my writing the most. Hopefully, I will be representing how I have grown as a writer throughout the year because of this class. Before taking this class I was already relatively confident in my writing abilities and was excited to take the class. Now that the course is completed I am even more confident in my writing because of all the new techniques and helpful tips I learned.

I began writing with basic vocabulary and barely any sentence variety. As the year progressed, I learned to advance my vocabulary and word choice in addition to incorporating a diversity of sentence structure. Nearing the end of the school year, I acknowledge that I have grown and learned more about writing. I anticipate that I will receive even more arduous writing assignments that require more research and time. Although it will be challenging, I feel confident that I will do well because I feel well prepared from all I’ve done this year. As I grow older, I will have to continue to write. I am writing in response to the letter that I have received to apply for the National Honor Society, and I am interested in becoming a member. NHS was first brought to my attention my freshman year, through peers and some teachers who would talk about all of the good outcomes and opportunities that can come about from being a member. From that point on, that has been my goal. I have worked as hard as I could to get up to where I am today.

Overall, I am a devoted and well-rounded student, making me a perfect candidate for National Honor Society. Not only do I posses the four tenets, character, scholarship, leadership and service, but I am also constantly working harder and striving to be better in all four regions. National Honor Society will help me reach my goal in becoming a better student and person. In addition, being a member of National Honor Society will allow me to be an example for other students, just like the members had been for me. In conclusion, I should be a member of National Honor Society because I demonstrate excellence in all four tenets of National Honor Society.

After taking Honors Written and Oral Communication freshman year I have changed as a communicator. I have grown in many areas as a writer and speaker; however, I have also have skills that need improvement. From the Fahrenheit 451 essay to the six-word memoir, my writing capabilities and experience has changed. I have sincerely grown in certain areas whereas I have also fell short in other areas.

I am ready to fully accept the responsibilities of National honor Society. I am involved in many activities and I am dedicated to push myself and reach my full potential in each and every one. In basketball, sometimes I would get knocked down but I would always get back up with the encouragement of my teammates and work harder to win. My coaches really influence me on and off the court. Coach Batchelder will critique me on the court and it’s up to me to make adjustments and also off the court he reminds me to maintain my grades which are also on me. I play a sport all year-round, my daily schedule is school, practice, homework and bed at 10:00pm so I can get 8 hours of sleep to start the day all over again.

I was thrilled when I received my letter informing me that I was eligible for National Junior Honor Society. NJHS provides numerous opportunities for me to improve upon my character development, leadership skills, and citizenship. Involvement in NJHS will allow me to hear other students’ ideas and provides me additional opportunities to give back to my

“A Letter from the Future” by Richard Heinberg describes to readers of a not too distant future (2101) an Earth in which its resources have been squandered and is facing an irreversible environmental meltdown caused by human’s greediness and mismanagement. Heinberg writes from the future to try and educate past civilization on what is happening in the future and how if their actions don’t change in how they treat their natural resources their future will irrefutably be destroyed for all mankind. Heinberg wrote this letter in order to explain just how dangerously high our current use of resources are and how it will impact the future.

Thank you for your consideration of me as a candidate for the National Honor Society, it means a tremendous deal to me. I have worked extremely hard to earn my chance to become a member of the National Honor Society and this application resembles a small prize on the enduring path to success for me. I believe, as a member of the National Honor Society, I will be able to enhance my spirit of service and accomplish more service goals and projects. Although, I already have many leadership skills under my belt, I can only imagine the many more skills I will gain from being a member of the National Honor Society. Two weeks ago, I laid down on my bed with a paper in tow while staring blankly into the white ceiling. I had an assignment for the track team’s end of the year party. I was not the captain, nor was I a key member of the team. I was not as fast as most of the varsity members. Even in the long jump, my best event, I didn’t make the top ten in states. English was not my best subject, and I especially despised writing

Senior year! Every senior is eager for graduation, their making college decisions, taking their SAT tests, getting senior portraits, and looking forward to getting ready for graduation day. Thinking back now, almost every adult told me my high school years would fly by, they were right.

My writing styles have changed drastically over the past four years of high school. This memo will explain how my writing has changed and how my knowledge of writing has improved.

If I had a time travel machine, I would love to go back to our class’s first meeting. It was such a memorable day. I was so nervous that my first piece of writing seemed less than mediocre as I reflected on what I had written that day. While being happy that my name was randomly chosen to be added to the class, I was very scared of this class. The last time I wrote an essay was two years ago, and before this class I had forgotten how to write one. I believe good writing requires lots of practice, and I have not practiced my writing for a long time. In addition, my reading was not even up to par since I only read books required for my classes. Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
