Title People are better when they work together. For Max and Kevin however, they’re different. The novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick shows this. The story is about a teen named Max who becomes friends with Kevin and together they become Freak the Mighty. Throughout the story, Max and Kevin accomplish things together they weren’t able to do by themselves. One example of when Freak and Max work together was when they were at the festival. Freak was unable to go to the fireworks, but with Max’s protection he was able to go. Not only was Max his protection, Freak was able to see the fireworks when Max lifted him on his shoulders. When they were down by the fireworks, “There are so many people crowded around, all he can see are feet
Max would carry Freak on his shoulders and Freak would steer him around with his feet and tell him which way to travel. It wouldn’t be like an ordinary walk to the place they were going, Freak would make it like an adventure and he would describe the scene and cover Max’s eyes. Sometimes Max would get dizzy or even fall off the sidewalk because it seemed so real. After many quests Freak and Max’s friendship grew stronger and
After some time, Max discloses that he has been involved in multiple sexual relationships and says he “can get in any woman’s pants.” He also brags that he is smarter than anyone in the group, regardless of the fact that one person has a PhD in
(29-30) His strategy works for the most part, but he ends up running into them a few times with Freak, like the time Freak signaled the cops for help. Finally, Margaret is nothing like Freak and Max, and has a personality of doing what she wants to do, a little defiant, as shown when she says “I prefer not to” several times. Almost like a catchphrase,
In Rodman Philbrick curious novel, Freak The Mighty two misfits learn to cope with each other. Philbrick’s use of tone and mood, displays the development of the boys character and relationship. Max and Kevin feel nerve wracked, when they are on their way to the firework show. Tony, a mischievous kid, maliciously intimidates a worried Max. Kevin confidently intimidates Tony by outwitting him. This shows that Kevin defends Max, showing him he cares. This is important because it demonstrates how Max now trust Kevin. Philbrick expresses this connection with a strong tone of fear and confidence. Later, Tony fiercely attacks Kevin and Max again. A shelfish Tony says, “Slice and Dice.” This makes Kevin fuel up with confidence. This shows that Kevin
because he is always there for Freek. For example, one day Freak was playing in his backyard and he got his ornithopter stuck in the tree. Max went to Freaks house and got the ornithopter for him (page 12). As well as when Max and Freak go to the fireworks alone. Freak is to short to see the fireworks with everyone standing around him, specifically on page 32 Max says “so I just sort of reach down without thinking and pick up Freak and set him on my shoulders.” This proves that Max can be very thoughtful without even thinking in ways that he doesn’t even know. Lastly, when Freak asks Max to go out at 3 in the morning to go digging in a sewer pipe, Max agrees, even though he doesn’t
Good Day Mr. Rodman Philbrick, I wanted to talk to you about your book “Freak the Mighty.” I enjoyed reading this book, it was actually really interesting. The thing I liked the most about this book was in the beginning of the book, when Maxwell thought that Freak was kind of weird. But then when freak moves next to his grandparent’s house, Maxwell starts to know Freak better and notices that Freak was actually a smart person. Later on the book Freak starts to help Maxwell with his school work, for Maxwell to get better get better at school. The only part that I will change in the book is the way Maxwell and Freak get to know each other. I will change the setting of the story, from the daycare, to the school cafeteria. It will start by seeing
For example, when he was trying to evade a bully, he relied on Freak to help him: “In a small voice I say, ‘Tell me what to do,’” (Philbrick 36). Max didn’t know what to do or how to get out of the situation on his own, so he called on Freak to help. Max also made new friends with Freak’s help: “The whole class is raising their fists in the air and chanting: ‘Freak the Mighty! Freak the Mighty -.
In chapter five, Gwen invited Max for dinner, but if she had not, I don’t think Freak and Max would have become good friends. Before they were close friends, Freak came over to Max’s house, but when his mother saw Max, she grabbed Freak and ran home, as Max looked like his father who was a criminal. When he goes to Gwen’s “apology dinner” on page twenty-five, Gwen sees that he is a well-behaved kid and kind to Freak. If she had not realized who he truly was at the dinner, she probably would not have approved of the friendship, and the two would not be as close as they are now.
The novel Freak The Mighty is about two boys that team up to face problems like bullying. The novel The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place is about a girl and her uncles who try to protect their towers from being taken down. In the novels Freak The Mighty and The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place, the main characters have to overcome great personal challenges, Max has to endure losing his best friend while Margaret has to bear the thought of her uncles’ towers being torn down. The first personal challenge to be overcome is Maxwell’s, who had to endure losing his best friend Kevin, or Freak.
Together they balance each other out, to a certain degree, but as they get older they realize they
This all changed when his best friend Kevin, a very intelligent, short, boy with Morquio syndrome, came around and turned Max’s life upside-down. Its funny to think that basically all Kevin, or Freak, had to do is remind Max that he is not what everyone thinks he is. The reader will also discover that after reading this book they will be able to accept other people who seem different than them.
Brian and Jeannette have always been a dream team. They have always been there for each other through all the rocky patches. Their relationship is something most siblings want with one another. They defended, protected, and listened to each other, and stood by each other’s side through it all. I think it’s beautiful how they never gave up on one another. It’s like they didn’t want to disappoint each other because they both have been victims of disheartenment. I hope one day I have a relationship, of sorts, that is like theirs. I know I have one’s that are close to what the two siblings have, but not close
Mark and Bryon live very similar lives. They both come from a poor background and have to find a way around many things. They are both very strong when it comes to solving problems and using their knowledge. Bryon and Mark both grew up in difficult situations. No matter what the scenario is they are always there for each other. This is one of the reasons I believe the boy have such a strong bond. For example, when Mark got into a fight at a school dance, Bryon was there right
In the short story, “This is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”, by Sherman Alexie, I looked at two characters: Thomas and Victor. Thomas Builds-the-Fire is a storyteller on a reservation who everyone ignores because they think he is crazy. Victor on the other hand is a guy who would not dare be seen talking to Thomas. Thomas knows that Victor is in need of help, but Victor will not admit it. I want to show how these two characters who are completely opposite of each other, come together during a time of need.
Lastly the most incredible example of their bond together was when they entered the United Kingdom dog show. Under all odds they made it to the finals of the show on national television. Through all the hardships each one of them went through lead them to that moment in time, which led to a championship at the national dog
