The book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick is about two boys named Kevin and Max. Neither one of these boys are exactly normal, “freak” (a.k.a Kevin) is physically handicapped and was diagnosed with Morquio Syndrome. Freak is abnormally short but extremely smart. On the other hand, we have Max. Max is extremely tall, but he has LD (Learning Disorder) where he has trouble with reading and writing. Max describes himself as a “butthead” where he says “I never really had a brain until Freak came along”. Having a good friendship means learning more each day, helping one another out and fighting for each other. Freak and Max had never been friends in daycare, and Max wasn’t sure if he even wanted to be friends, but that all changed the summer before 8th grade. One day Max saw a small town moving truck arrive up to the old duplex down the block. When he went to take a look who it was, it turned out to be “the weirdo robot boy” from daycare with his glowing white-yellow hair and his fierce eyes. At first Max had an odd encounter, but later on Max helped get Freak’s ornithopter out of the tree. If you’re wondering what an ornithopter is well Freak says “It’s just an immense word for mechanical bird”, and that’s when Max got his brain. …show more content…
Max would carry Freak on his shoulders and Freak would steer him around with his feet and tell him which way to travel. It wouldn’t be like an ordinary walk to the place they were going, Freak would make it like an adventure and he would describe the scene and cover Max’s eyes. Sometimes Max would get dizzy or even fall off the sidewalk because it seemed so real. After many quests Freak and Max’s friendship grew stronger and
Freaks death was a really a main part of the story, and the movie. In the book Freak is in a hospital bed, and Max is in the waiting room of the hospital when Freak dies, and Max starts running and breaking windows to get to Freak. In the movie an ambulance comes and gets Freak, and Max starts
Morquio syndrome is when the metabolism does not have enough or is missing a substance. These molecules are called glycosaminoglycans. When the body does not produce enough enzymes, serious problems can happen. Morquio A is a recessive inherited disease. Most of the time the disease shows up in 2 to 3 year olds.
Kevin, in Freak the Mighty, also known as Freak, has morquio syndrome. It stops him from doing a lot of things “normal” people can do, but that’s what makes his character so interesting. Morquio syndrome is a genetic disorder. (Reuters, 19) It is one of a group of lysosomal storage disorders scientifically known as mucopolysaccharidoses, or MPS IV-AI.(Reuters, 15) It is typically chronic and progressive, and involves multiple organs of the body.(Reuters, 19)
Kevin or Freak is physically handicapped but very intelligent kid and Max and he work together as a team called “Freak the Mighty. The theme of Freak the Mighty is the importance of Family . He distances himself from grim and gram, how his family is messed up in the sense that his mother is dead, his father is in jail, and they don't say his name, and finally he contrasts his family and other families, views his own family different. To elaborate further on that idea, Philbrick shows that Max distances himself from his family(Grim and Gram.)Gram and Grim, bless their pointed little heads, they're my mother's people, her parents. (1.3)By calling them “my mother’s people,” I got the idea that he is distancing himself from them.

Skin-directed treatments are not typically used to treat Sezary syndrome because the disease involves both the skin and the blood at the time of diagnosis, making this particular type of treatment less effective. Many of the systemic treatments used to treat advanced mycosis fungoides, such as photopheresis, oral retinoids, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy, are also used to treat Sezary syndrome. Chemotherapy or targeted therapy are typically used to treat patients who are no longer responding to other forms of treatment. A stem cell transplant might also be a possibility for patients for whom other forms of treatment are no longer effective.
Have you ever wondered about the diseases that you can get from your parents? One of these major diseases that can change someone’s life is called the Marfan Syndrome. Marfan Syndrome is a disorder of connective tissue that is inherited from the parents. The bones and circulatory system are usually the parts of the body that are longer and the ones that are changed because of the disease.
Morgellons Syndrome, as identified by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, is an ‘unexplained constellation of symptoms’. Symptoms include non-healing skin lesions, emergence of fibres and solid material from the skin and disturbing sensations on the skin, including the feeling of being bitten, pricked by pins and a stinging sensation. These symptoms are chronic. (Pearson, Selby, Katz, Cantrell, Braden, Parise, Paddock, Lewin-Smith, Kalasinsky, Goldstein, Hightower, Papier, Lewis, Motipara, Eberhard, 2012. p.1-2.).
The foundation behind Morgellons disease has developed a working case with seven common signs and symptoms for the diagnosis. Some of these include skin lesions, cutaneous movement sensations, “filaments” in or on skin lesions, emotional effects and more. A big basis of Morgellons disease is that the patients with the disease are suffering from psychiatric problems. These mental problems are a big cause of making the disease more “serious” and causes more emotional effects and delusions of parasitosis. Morgellons disease is one in the same as delusions of parasitosis. “Murase et al. (7) described Morgellons as a potential rapport-enhancing, trust-building title for delusions of parasitosis that enables doctor and patient to communicate more
Another character Maxwell Kane is first described as a kid who was always in his room in the basement and didn’t really come out,he just played video games and read comic books and also wasn’t a smart kid. If we were to judge him solely on their appearance we might assume that he doesn’t really like to collaborate with other people and has no friends that’s why he is always in the his room playing his video game or reading his comic books. In fact when we first saw him he was a nice kid but also a shy one too. This shows that Maxwell Kane is a big kid but also not that smart but freak can help him by maybe teaching him some new stuff. Later we see him in class answering a question from what the teacher asked him but he doesn’t usually do that
Morquio syndrome is an uncommon hereditary birth defect that is likely to happen in one of every 200,000 births. This illness may not be noticeable at birth. Some symptoms start between the years of 1 and 3. This syndrome is an advanced illness meaning that each year the child gets older this disease gets even worse.
Morgellons Disease is a condition where unusual threadlike fibers appear under the skin. Doctors disagree whether it is a physical or mental condition. Symptoms of Morgellons Disease may include crawling sensations, burning, extreme itching, sores that abruptly appear and take a long time to heal. The CDC found in their studies that this condition is uncommon, only 115 out of 1 million plus people were identified with. Most are white women between 45-64 years of age. Confirmation was not achieved for it to be an infections cause. Feeling lethargic, with disruption in sleep patterns were the most common symptom. I can’t judge whether or not I believe it! I have never been through it nor have I known anyone with this.
In the beginning of the movie Max is made fun of because he is different and he can not learn as easily as the other kids. He is taller and stronger than any of the other kids in his seventh grade class, which he has been in the seventh grade for two years. A little ways into the movie freak is introduced, or that is what the other kids called him, but his real name is Kevin. He is crippled because he has Morquio syndrome. Kevin
Due to Max's very large size, he feels as though he is a walking stereotype, the constant bullying and people staring cause him to want to hide and just disappear from the world so he doesn't stand up for himself. Kevin and Max rise above these limitations together, Max has Kevin on his shoulders which gives Kevin a chance to do things he had never done before and Kevin acts as Max’s brain by telling him what to do and how to do it and he teaches Max to do these things on his own by forcing him into situations where he has to defend both of them. When Kevin and Max do those things it allows them to both grow as people and become more ready for the future and whatever obstacles it may bring along with teaching
“I will name you… Max!” Mac stopped Max abruptly. The next day Mac and his new friend Max walked to school. Yesterday Mac had shoved a bunch of things into the can to help him at school, a paper shredder, magnets, pencil sharpener, and wifi antenna for use of his cell phone at school. At school his teacher was asking math questions and Max was in his bag when she asked,
