Summary: Chapter 1: Chapter one begins with the narrator, whose name is Victor talking about his family background as well as his birth and his childhood. The narrator “ is a by birth a Genevese” ( Shelley Chapter 1 pg. 38) and that his family “is one of the most distinguished of that republic” ( Shelley Chapter 1 pg. 38). Victor begins to become overly fascinated by the mysteries of life and begins to study about the human body. After two years of energetic working, Victor learned all of what his professors had taught him. Secluded in his own apartment, where he can’t be seen by anyone, Victor begins the construction of his creature. I, who had ever been surrounded by amiable companions, continually engaged in endeavoring to bestow mutual pleasure- I was now alone. In the university whither I was going I must form my own friends and be my own protector.” ( Shelley 54-55) This quote was said following the death of Victor’s mother in addition to his move to Ingolstadt. Due to the hospitality of his parents, Victor considered himself to be “totally unfitted for the company of strangers”. Because of Victor being secluded, his manner and the way goes about his education began to change. He becomes more obsessive. This leads to the madness of Victor creating the monster since no one is there to comfort him. “ Every night I was oppressed by a slow fever, and I became nervous to a most painful degree; the fall of a leaf startled me, a shunned my fellow creatures as if I had been guilty of a crime.” ( Shelley 68) Because of the isolation, Victor’s mentally and physical health is starting to decline. Because of the time Victor spent in creating the monster, he had not only become ill, but has become sleep deprived and malnourished.
