Jaz Schultz Mr. Berens Great Books Hour 6 1 November 2017 Nature As Medicine In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the self-reliance, spirituality and individuality that Victor Frankenstein finds in nature shows the relation of nature and the human feeling; when one finds himself in nature, he is restored mentally, physically and spiritually. In the beginning of Victor’s life he is described with naturalistic metaphors and other analogies in order to give the reader a better understanding of the connection Victor has with the environment. When Victor is mourning his friends and family, he frequently avoids humanity and attempts to find health and relaxation in nature. He compares his life to the course or current of the river, and as the river flows into sharp rocks, his life flows into misfortune. This metaphor of the mountain river shows the relation of nature and human feeling. The metaphor used to relate Victor’s feelings and experience is a natural setting rather than intellectual description or by dialogue with other characters. This displays the romanticism and attractive image of a swelling mountain stream. The most important uses of nature are found after William and Justine are killed by Victor’s creation. His brother, William’s death really strongly disturbs Victor and he falls into a profound gloom. His depressed state prohibits him from finding help or comfort from Henry, his close friend. Victor travels through nature to Geneva to find his family in hope of relief and restfulness, but it is the nature he encounters along the way that rebuilds him: “I remained two days at Lausanne, in this painful state of mind. I contemplated the lake: the waters were placid; all around was calm, and the snowy mountains, "the palaces of nature," were not changed. By degrees the calm and heavenly scene restored me, and I continued my journey towards Geneva. ..."Dear mountains! My own beautiful lake!...Your summits are clear; the sky and lake are blue and placid. (Shelley, 47). Victor’s attitude toward the earth and nature that is visible throughout the story shows how only nature can heal and strengthen Victor’s health.

The environment has a lot to say in Marry Shelly's Frankenstein. It seems to reflect somewhat what is going on emotionally with Victor in the story. Victor finds solace in solitude with nature, and appears to use it as a coping mechanism to escape from the horrors of his life. Nature also ties into how the monster Victor has created feels, but in a much different way than it does for him.
Mary Shelley uses descriptive word to describe how the peaceful nature helps to soothe him, she says “[he] contemplated the lake; the waters were placid all around was calm, and snowy mountains, the places of nature, were not changed, by degrees the calm and heavenly scene restored me and, [he] continued [his] journey to Geneva” demonstrating that nature helps to relax him from the problems as he returns to Geneva (77). Because Victor was so devoted in his creation of the monster that he began to find comfort that his family has always given him into nature. Robert Walton, the captain of the ship that finds Frankenstein, notes “broken in spirit as he is, no one can feel more deeply than he [Frankenstein] does the beauties of nature. The starry sky, the sea, and every sight afforded by these wonderful regions seem still to have the power of elevating his soul from earth” (Shelley 16). In the presence of the starry sky and the sea the thoughts of death escape him. On Victor’s last and darkest day the element of nature is brought into the scene suggesting the importance nature plays within the novel. Despite the monsters deformities and seclusion from society, nature is able to lift his spirits and bring him hope for a better future. Nature has the same healing effect upon the monster as with Victor, “…spirits were elevated by the enchanting appearance of nature; the past was blotted from my [his] memory, the present was tranquil, and the future gilded by bright rays of hope and anticipations of joy” (Shelley 99). With spring comes hope, as the flowers blossom the monsters feels his spirits being elevated. Just as nature flourishes, the monster is growing as well.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein deeply develops the trope of nature vs. nurture. The romantic era is characterized by a desire to revert to natural animalistic living in the world. Shelley’s main characters embody nature and nurture respectively. Victor, raised in a loving home, kills with no concern and disregards his caring family. The Monster, Victor’s creation, on the other hand, is forced to live in nature like an animal with no companion. Victor is Shelley’s direct comment on the Victorian lifestyle characterized by material possession and religious moral structure. In the novel nature brought a sense of calmness to Victor. After his sister Elizabeth died, Frankenstein climbed the mountain and wished to die in an avalanche, which was similarly to the death of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Victor Frankenstein, a complex character created by Mary Shelley, experienced a complete change in attitude and perspective on the scientific world as he knew it. Between the deaths of his close family and friends, to the constant fight for survival as his own creation stalked him, Victor was under straining circumstances that allowed for his evolution as a character. Pre monster, Victor had strong morals and close relationships with his family. His family was his priority. Victor’s dedication to science was always a constant nagging in the back of his mind, but it did not mean more to him than his family dead. During the formation of his creation, he began to block off his family, especially his fiancee, Elizabeth. His dedication to science was his only priority, above food and hygiene. He was driven by the creation of his monster. After creation, his family members were killed off, eliminating any type of relationship he had with them, he rejected all science and moral values.
Mary Shelley uses nature several ways in this novel: The natural surroundings of this novel are shown to have restorative powers, do not harm nature for your own advantage, and as a method to seclude oneself from the real world. In my opinion, Mary Shelley is trying to tell us that nature should not be altered. Nature in the novel is used as a central theme to connote everything natural. Mary Shelley in the novel Frankenstein has used the theme of the appreciation of nature to show that if one defies nature the consequences are severe however, if one appreciates nature and stays in the natural order everything will be alright.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has undoubtedly withstood the test of time. Frankenstein’s direct association with fundamental Gothic literature is extremely renowned. However, the novel’s originality is derived from the foundational thematic values found within the relationship (or lack there of) between Victor Frankenstein and the monster he had created, in combination with a fascinatingly captivating plot. Understandably, Frankenstein can often be associated with a multitude of concepts; however, in this particular instance, the circumstances in the book seemed remarkably coherent with Shelley’s Romantic beliefs in preserving the natural world, and one’s natural existence.
