Drawbacks to employers While there are upsides to employers offing a four day work schedule there are also draw backs that many employers face as well. Many employees use their extra day off every week to work a second job. Often times when this happens the employee returns to work more tired and run down then they would if they were working a standard five day work schedule Thank God it’s Thursday? 74). Returning to work being more run down will cause a decrease in productivity. It has also been found that a large number of people who do work a four day work week report being more tired and fatigued throughout the day and tend to become more distracted than do employees who work a more traditional schedule (Bird 1067). This increased tiredness and fatigue will ultimately lead to a decrease in production. A four day work week can also lead to less time available to assist customers and clients. McDonald’s Corporation closes its office at 1 pm every Friday during the summer months, and has done so since 1969. It has been reported that McDonald’s customers who are trying to contact the corporate office on a Friday afternoon often time become irritated because there is no one available to take their call (Thank God it’s Thursday? 74). There was a survey conducted by Myron Fottler over a three year period. The survey group was employees who were working a traditional five day work week. The company that employed them made the switch from five day work weeks to four. Fottler found that after only six months of working the new four day schedule almost 50% of the employees wished to return to the traditional five day schedule. At thirteen months into the transition Fottler surveyed the remaining four day per week
