Drawbacks to employers While there are upsides to employers offing a four day work schedule there are also draw backs that many employers face as well. Many employees use their extra day off every week to work a second job. Often times when this happens the employee returns to work more tired and run down then they would if they were working a standard five day work schedule Thank God it’s Thursday? 74). Returning to work being more run down will cause a decrease in productivity. It has also been found that a large number of people who do work a four day work week report being more tired and fatigued throughout the day and tend to become more distracted than do employees who work a more traditional schedule (Bird 1067). This increased tiredness and fatigue will ultimately lead to a decrease in production. A four day work week can also lead to less time available to assist customers and clients. McDonald’s Corporation closes its office at 1 pm every Friday during the summer months, and has done so since 1969. It has been reported that McDonald’s customers who are trying to contact the corporate office on a Friday afternoon often time become irritated because there is no one available to take their call (Thank God it’s Thursday? 74). This could also be the case with other industries as well, not …show more content…
There was a survey conducted by Myron Fottler over a three year period. The survey group was employees who were working a traditional five day work week. The company that employed them made the switch from five day work weeks to four. Fottler found that after only six months of working the new four day schedule almost 50% of the employees wished to return to the traditional five day schedule. At thirteen months into the transition Fottler surveyed the remaining four day per week
Why is our traditional five day week changing to a four day week? Any reason? A four day week would result in extra hours of work, interference with family schedules and much more. In any case what’s the problem with the five day school week? The customary five day school week should stay without any alterations. There are many reasons that support the understanding of having a five day school week instead of changing it into a four day school week. Firstly, people are already used to the five day week and might have to put some changes to their regular habits. Secondly, parents at work would have a very hard time to find a person to take care of their child
While officer fatigue is less frequently an issue under the 5-8 shift plan, it is not with out drawbacks. Under this shift plan, many officers are permanently assigned the same days off each week, rarely allowing them to have weekends off when most other individuals are. When a weekend is offered, there is the potential chance that the officer will be scheduled for court due to the fixed nature of this shift plan. Additionally, calls-for-service that come towards the end of a shift have long response times, and are in turn passed on to the incoming shift, potentially adding stress to the officers coming on shift, leading to decreased morale levels amongst some officers. Although, the 5-8 plan is more cost efficient with equipment and resource
Of course there are some cons to four day weeks. Parents who work five days a week may have to hire a babysitter to watch their child. They are adding 15 more minutes to each school day. There is less time
Donte Collins wrote a compelling poem called What The Dead Know By Heart. When first reading the essay, it was not clear what message was trying to be sent. Points such as death and feeling unworthy were evident though. After carefully re-reading and evaluating the wording of the poem, it became prominent that it represents the protest Black Lives Matter.
In this set of materials, the writer discusses the benefits of four-day work week for companies, the whole economy, and individuals. However, the lecturer is in disagreement with what the writer states.
I believe that there are several more negatives than there are positives to having a four-day school week. For example, parents of young children will have a difficult time trying to find a good daycare for their kids while they are at work on
The advantages for a five day week would be more time for school work. Students will have an extra day to work and study. The students even have more friend time with their friends. They could get help with an assignment with
Going to school for four days can have many benefits for students, teachers, and parents. Students seem to have the most benefits. (o) One benefit with having a shorter week is having positive results for many activities. From going to a five to a four day week the scores of students did not change. (1) Then there is the most obvious benefit and that is the extra day the students can use to catch up on all their work. (3) Teachers also have some benefits supporting a four day school week. (o) The first would be they are more supportive and do a better job then they would on a five day school week. (1) With the three day weekend teachers have more time planning lesson plans. (3) The school staff works the same hours on four day week as if the would on a five day week. (5) Then there are parents, who yes are still getting benefits from a shorter week.
Before introducing the workplace issues related to the development of four-day workweek, a clear definition of this schedule is needed. According to Department of Labor (n.d.), “A workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours, or seven consecutive 24-hour periods. The workweek does not have to coincide with the calendar week, but instead it may begin on any day of the week and at any hour of the day.” It might be the “four-day, 32-hour workweek – more leisure, less work” (Wernette 1), or the “three-day, 40 hour, compressed work week” that Vega
Well the traditional five days a week is making students feel burnout in a way that student don’t want to even go, especially throughout the school year since it can be so stressful, and it’s not only students but the teachers too! Over a course of time we can start to feel exhaustion because you are constantly putting all your energy into school and you are constantly using your brain, but the four-day school week system will allow students and teachers to get more rest and devote more time and energy into the school days efficiently, creating happier students and teachers. Four days a week can teach us students how to properly manage time. For example, we will soon realize their won’t be time for messing around anymore, class time will be taken much more serious. We’ll have to use our extra day to study and work on homework. This will teach us how we need to use the time provided properly, and we will learn how it's a life lesson for the real world. The four day school system will increase a school's financial stability, if schools take one day out of their week they can save a lot of money within a year. For example, electricity bills, bus fees, school lunches, paying teachers, etc. With the money they saved they can pay teachers more, we can innovate the school, we can do more after school activities, and get new gear for sport teams. In my opinion, that sounds
Just as there were assumptions made regarding the successful implementation of the reduced work week, there were also cautions associated with it. According to Gannon (1974), there are several reasons why caution should be used when implementing the four day work week. Here are several of those reasons: fatigue, doubt that productivity will increase in the long run and other approaches could be used to substitute such as flexible work hours and flextime.
The first reason schools should have a four day week is because some families have stuff to do during the week. For example I have a doctor’s appointment during school today. Also people have family things to do like funerals etcetera. The last reason is that some people don’t have time to do stuff after school.
First of all, the author claims that four-day workweek causes increasing company profits. He believes shortened workweek may cause employees to be more effective and decrease their working errors. He states that hiring new employees will not lead to increasing company costs because
Comparing a rodents skeleton to a humans can show the many differences between the two or even some of their similarities. The bones may not look exactly the same as one another, but they use the same function as humans do. Whether its because of their shape, size, purpose, etc., they serve the same purposes as our skeletons do. They may have to carry weight differently, like in the hips and feet, or look differently to fit their lifestyle, like their skulls. Their skulls are longer for their noses and mouths, their hips are tilted different for the way that they walk, and they walk on their toes because of the way that their feet are built. They’re similar, but also very different in many
A four day weekend sound just about wonder, the best thing that could happen to anyone! Especially younger people that are in school, knowing the fact that they have to stress out because of homework, essays, and worst of all, waking up early. All these these things we have to keep up with can be really stressful for young people.
