Margaret, thank you for your well written discussion on the differences between formal and support group therapy. Your explanations were eloquently written. I concur that when an individual does not want to confront their addiction it can pose a problem for their own progress but the group as well. Formal group therapy is appropriate in these type of situations even though it is a more direct form of therapy. The trained professional must attempt to establish a rapport with the individual before confronting them about their addiction. Another way to establish rapport is thorough the group. The seasoned members can serve as role models for those first entering the group to instill hope in the process (Lewis, 2014).

Lewis,
At the beginning of my training, I was hesitant to work with people struggling with addiction. However, at this point, I am excited to begin working with this population. The raw honesty presented in the group setting along with the anger at the possibility of losing a safe place created a dynamic I wanted to further explore. Research supports that individuals attending group therapy in a 12 step program format succeed if they have the proper support and motivation (Cite). The group dynamic demonstrated that recovery takes time and self-discovery, similar to other situations dealt with in therapy. Subsequently, by using my sense of self and humor with clients struggling with addiction, I can help them in their journey. Furthermore, the client needs to identify accountability at their own pace in the process and not when others dictate. This knowledge and the personalization of addiction will aid me in the future support of my
Group therapy for me was a very new concept. My understanding towards group therapy was that every one share their concern issues and goup members discuss about that issue and get different perspectives about how to deal with that issue by building cohession and trust among the members. According to zander (1968) a group is a collection of individuals who have relation to one another that make them interdependent to some significant degree. , Group therapy is a type of psychotherapy that involves one or more therapists working with several people at the same time.Generally, the counselling group has a speific focus, which may be educational, vocational, social or
Irvin Yalom has eleven Therapeutic Factors that he believes create therapeutic change in group therapy. Yalom’s eleven Therapeutic Factors have had a great impact on group therapy facilitators. He believes that these eleven factors can greatly help in making it easy to change individuals within the group therapy setting. Yalom (2005) says, I suggest that therapeutic change is an enormously complex process that occurs through an intricate interplay of human experiences, which I will refer to as ‘therapeutic factors.’ There is considerable advantage in approaching the complex through the simple, the total phenomenon through its basic component processes. His Therapeutic Factors are useful for group therapists to gain a better understanding of
There are several different kinds of psychoeducational groups for addictions: Alcoholics Anonymous, Smart Recovery, Nar-Anon, and so many more. Although those these groups may focus on different types of addiction one thing they all had in common to decide how the group was to be formed. Each one group has their own unique why on how it is ran, but according to to Hepworth, Rooney, Dewberry-Rooney, and Strom-Gottfried success of a group rests largely on the thoughtful creation
Kerri, I like your discussion post. I think your discussion board is very interesting. Kerri, in your discussion board, you stated that the difficult group for you to lead is counseling and therapy group. My favorite group that I would like to lead is counseling and group therapy. I would like to lead counseling and group therapy because I am experienced with some of the topics the counselors would be discussing such as “individuals who sexually abused, people who are diagnosed with emotional disorders, teenagers in an institutional setting, people with eating disorder, or people who suffer from panic attacks” ((Harvill, Jacobs, Masson, & Schimmel, 2015, p. 13). In my job experience, I have work many individual who were diagnosed with
Treatment is based on the patient’s individual and realistic goals, concerns, and meaningful activities. A lot of the time group therapy can be useful for patient’s with substance abuse to regain their social skills and be associated with people going through the same situation. Also, treatment could be broken up into several stages to meet the needs of each individuals and inpatient or outpatient treatments can occur. “Therapists need to educate the patients about the addictions they have. They need to learn that their moods will be exacerbated and to learn that they can deal with their feelings through certain techniques for anger and stress management

(Corey et al., 1995). In addition, it increases the risk for harm and exploitation. If the counselor finds that a potentially harmful multiple relationship has arisen due to unforeseen factors, he or she must take reasonable steps for resolving it with due regard to the affected person’s best interest.
Track 1 residency really taught me so much about myself. We had so much time to ask questions about how to counsel people. We did some relaxing exercises, and we had the chance to learn about other people. I learned that it is important to be aware of how you are handling what you are experiencing in that very moment. This was a time to ask questions, and to learn how to ask people questions. In track 2, I hope to further enhance my skills what learning how to use the skills that I already have.
It is crucial for school counselors to be able to measure growth in students who participate in the group counseling. Therefore, students were given a pre-evaluation (see Appendix O) to establish their thoughts, feelings, and views on how they perceive themselves, and how they related themselves in area of self-esteem. After completion of the sessions, the students were administered a post-evaluation (see Appendix P). This valuable information helped see potential growth in students after completing the group counseling sessions.
Initial stage of a group talks about the early phases of the counseling group and leads the facilitator through the necessary steps and characteristics.
Depression in late life is very common, particularly in older adults who are moving in to a different phase of their lives. They may experience a loss of a job, death of a spouse, empty nest, or a move that has taken them away from their social network. Geriatric depression is expensive for everyone involved, from the seniors who suffer not only mentally but physically from its effects to the increased use of health services such as emergency room visits. Suicide is also a consequence of depression in seniors. Sometimes depression is not diagnosed properly because its physical symptoms can mimic other illnesses. Many women, ages 55 and up, experience feelings of loneliness, isolation and do not know what to do now that they are in this new stage in their life; not working etc. Is the women’s group effective in helping members overcome feelings of depression and isolation?
Research proved that individual therapy was more effective than group therapy when treating SAD. Studies supported the idea that internet-therapy was more successful than face-to-face therapy with regards to SAD. Therefore, my new proposed study is aimed at proving that individual internet-based therapy is an effective treatment for SAD. While researching the three focus article, a common occurrence throughout the studies was self-reporting through questionnaires. Although questionnaires have their benefits like being relatively inexpensive and the ability to implement a large volume of participants, questionnaires can lead to bias. According to researchers, Elizabeth Austin, Ian Deary, Gavin Gibson, Murray McGregor and J. Dent, some questionnaires’ scales
I forgot to mention about the many other treatments there are out there such as individual, group therapy, or 12 step programs some people would prefer the individual therapy because they don't want a lot of people in their personal business about their addiction(s). I know it may be hard for some people to sit in a group session and talk about their problems but sometimes you will be able to meet people that suffer from the same addiction as you then you can talk to them privately about how they beat the addiction then you will be able to practice the same procedures they took to get over their addiction.
Group therapy is lead by a trained specialist that focuses on skill building and one’s interpersonal process. Group therapy has an associated fee, and only holds a certain number of sessions (Lewis, 2014). In Group therapy, clients help clients through listening, providing support to one another, making suggestions, and simply being there for people (Lewis, 2014). In group therapy, the therapist will present the client with some material that they can learn from, and then get the client to build their skills. An example of group therapy is AA (Lewis, 2014). The purpose of group therapy is to help the clients through the different stages of change and work towards recovery (Lewis, 2014).
