Forgiveness What is most important in life? Is it the people that encourage, specific items, or is it the life lessons? Mitch Albom’s book “Tuesdays With Morrie”, Morrie is an old man who is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and also used to be Mitch’s college professor and Mitch is an old college student. In the book, it explains about how every Tuesday they talk about a new life lesson. Morrie taught Mitch very valuable things throughout all the years that he was teaching Morrie and when Morrie was sick, Mitch would go over every Tuesday and they would talk about things that life would or has thrown at them and how to deal with it. Morrie first explained to Mitch that happiness is never achieved until everything is cleared up and …show more content…
Let it go. Freely and wholeheartedly grant freedom. It has very little to do with feelings or even trust. Forgiveness is simply a decision to let go of our regrets and our own view of justice. If we are able to forgive others, we also learn to forgive ourselves in situations of self-guilt. Forgiveness helps us feel light and helps us get rid of hard feelings that occupy our mind and heart and eat away our peace of mind. Forgiveness is a way to self-fulfillment. People who can readily forgive others are much more responsible and satisfied inside than those who keep grudges against others and develop feelings of enmity. Those who forgive help create positive energy on this planet. In the article “Forgiveness Towards Others” by Charu B shae states “Our grudges will only affect the relationship with the person and not hurt the other person in any way.” She says that holding grudges against the other person won’t insult them or hurt them in any way but will affect the relationship between you whether you plan to make up with them or not. Charu also brings up forgiveness on a spiritual level. She brings up a situation of a terrorist. She says that if the terrorist killed hundreds of innocent people, would he or she deserve forgiveness? She states that such criminals kill common man in the name of religion and consider it a way to please or reach their God. “ What makes the power of forgiveness comparable to God? The very nature of humans is to get angry and feel resentful towards those who have hurt us or did some harm to us in any way.”
Forgiveness is a powerful word, of which has a powerful impact. But what does forgiveness mean? To what does one owe to be forgiven? Forgiveness is a process that oneself must teach to achieve. The book Left to Tell by Immaculée Ilibagiza exemplifies forgiveness and gives us as readers a new perspective.
Forgive today, live in peace tomorrow. Forgiveness; one of the many hardships we encounter throughout life. As Marianne Williamson, an American author, stated, “Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness.” Forgiveness leads to peace because it lets go of all the negative feelings and allows freedom from disturbance to take place.
Also, understanding is the key to forgive someone regrets his immoral acts against you. The story of Albert Speer reveals the sorrow and compassion of one of the culprit find himself face to face with a victim. Mr. Albert was supporting the Nazis against Jews during the Holocaust. He acknowledged his responsibility and guilt for the mass crime. With the guilty verdict, he imprisoned for twenty years for his legal inhuman acts. When Simon Wiesenthal met him, Albert considered his eyes to find compassion and humanity inside (The Sunflower 246). Thus, I believe that when victim lets down the revenge, he also removes most of the barriers for a substantial correction. In the meantime, if you forgive, you can stop the stupidity of haters and prove that you are much stronger. Besides the world has a lot of evidence proclaiming that the desire for revenge disappears even after a long time of reciprocal violence, but only the people who forgive are the last standing. Overall, to forgive is to build bridges between victims and culprits for a healthy
Thematic Statement: Forgiving someone for their mistake can make yourself free of anger and bitterness.
“Forgiveness is not always as easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness.” This heart wrenching quote by Marianne Williamson gives substantial insight on the true agony that comes along with forgiveness. As we all travel through the journey of life, we face many obstacles which we must overcome.
Forgiveness applies to my own life because lies were revealed in parts of my family that affected it too much. Everyone lies at least one time, but sooner or later the truth comes out. What I learn from the book is that if one holds too much anger inside it will end up destroying one’s soul. Another thing that I learned is that lies hurt people and changes their perspective on how they see that person. Forgiveness will always help me go on in life. The new perspectives that I have made about this subject is that a resentful person may never find a way through life until it is too
Tuesdays with Morrie illustrates the importance of forgiveness in forming and maintaining a healthy relationship.
To start, forgiveness is a good action that results in better consequences. Forgiveness can only be great and rewarding due to the fact that moving on and leaving the past behind is what the main focus truly is. As demonstrated, the film Simon Birch shows a young boy named Simon and his best friend Joe. Simon was picked on numerous times from his physical limitations and
Others may argue forgiveness is not possible without justice.People believe justice is essential because not everyone chooses to do it.Sometimes justice makes it easier to forgive. It creates a safe environment for people to live in.Without justice, there would be nothing to stop genocides and rapes. It will not prevent people from doing things against what has been proved as good.Sometimes forgiveness does not work, justice is all it takes. However, that is not always true, justice does not mean a person is forgiven. The victim can still choose to not forgive him. There is no forgiveness with justice, but there is forgiveness without justice, it is an action between the soul and mind. For example, In the story “Let South Africa show the world how to forgive,”it states,”retribution leads to a cycle of reprisal, leading to counter reprisal in an inexorable movements, as in Rwanda, Northern Ireland, and in the former Yugoslavians. The only thing that can break that cycle, making impossible a new beginning, is forgiveness.Without forgiveness there is no future.” (Page -638.Paragraph 14, Pearson). An analysis of this reveals that forgiveness is a dedication to an individual's life and a new start. It is important to give a person another chance, others every soul in this world would go seek for justice which will lead to a disaster in the society.Another example for this can be found on page 638,”They used to have what people regarded as an intractable problem. They are now resolving
2. According to the article, forgiveness is granting unconditionally grace to those who have cause suffering and pain and accepting what they did and not letting that affect the love they show to that person. Forgiveness is central for racial reconciliation because forgiveness is the first step of mending the relationship with others. It also allows God to do a work between the two groups. When there is forgiveness God can change hearts and create amazing things to happen out of tragedies.
Forgiveness have important medicinal effect on health. Researchers and study have shown that people who forgive have less chances of health issues like heart attack and brain tumor. “People who hold tolerance views of human nature and don’t seem to nurse grieveness unduly tend to have blood pressures in the normal range” (Callwood, J. 2007, p. 153). Writer in the above findings tells her readers the medicinal effect of tolerance. She beautifully explains the positive effect of forgiveness in contrast with unforgiveness where her contrasting finding says “Unforgiving people, some studies show, are three times more likely to have heart diseases as people who don’t carry grudges”(Callwood, J. 2007, p.153). Writer here is addressed to people who cannot or do not forgive and tells them how harmful holding grudges are to their health. She beautifully explains the finding by telling first the negative effect of not forgiving in comparison to
The motivation and tendency of people to forgive others remains an important topic of discussion. In today’s society most people at some period have experienced feeling of un forgiveness towards friend, or relatives. “Forgiveness was defined as the ability to relinquish of resentment towards others” (Baskin & Enright, 2004, p. 80).
Forgiveness has been defined in many ways by psychologists and researchers with no one universal definition. Hill (as cited in Maltby, Day and Mackaskill 2001) state that it is widely agreed that forgiveness involves a willingness to abandon resentment, negative judgement and indifferent behaviour towards the person who has hurt them Although research is recent, from the last 15 years, it has helped develop our understanding of forgiveness . Research has shown that forgiveness gives positive mental health and prevents the development of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression and stress. Two major models of forgiveness are Enright’s model and Worthington’s (2001) pyramid model to REACH forgiveness. Both these models involve steps and
It is also vital to look at Wilson’s view on the practice of forgiveness and how if an individual decides to ignore it, it can place a road block in their process of change. She believes that God speaks about forgiveness for the following reasons:” (1) we are all sinners with whom to relate so we’ll need to become skillful forgivers (2) God makes forgiveness a centerpiece of our healing process because living in un-forgiveness is so much worse (Wilson, 2001).
Forgiveness is what holds and brings relationships together. If you stay angry for long, your heart stubbornly hardens. But if you choose to forgive, you will be filled with the grace of God. We are all sinners and should never carry a
