VALUE CHAIN AND FOOD SECURITY
Food security is often defined as the state of having access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. To ensure that all humans are food secure and do not face the scourge of hunger, the world has set for itself an ambitious target of zero hunger by the year 2030 , as part of the sustainable development goals. Much progress has been made to increase food production and yields to meet the growing food demands, however challenges exist that are occasioned by conflict in developing countries, climate change and volatile food prices. There is however need to strengthen food systems and supply chains to reduce inefficiencies and better respond to shocks.

The 2017 state of food security and nutrition in the world report by the FAO finds that global hunger has been on the rise. In particular, 11% of the world’s population is hungry. In 2016, 815 million people were hungry. This number was 38million more than in 2015 . In its estimation, 489million hungry people reside in countries with civil conflict and strife. IFPRI on the other hand has found that the levels of hunger have decreased by 27% from the 2000 levels. This revelation is contained in the 2017 Global hunger index. Despite the seemingly varied numbers, both reports recognize the need to invest in peace to ensure food security and nutrition.
WFP on its part, estimated that the people who experienced hunger in 2016 at 795milion and forecasted a rise in 2017. This

The Age of Discovery is the European historical period from around the 15th century to the end of the 18th century, during which extensive overseas exploration came to be an important factor in the expansion of European culture. It was the Portuguese discovery of the Atlantic Archipelago of the Azores, the discovery of a once unknown ocean route to the East in 1498, and the ultimate discovery of the western coast of Africa, and the trans-Atlantic discovery of the Americas on behalf of Spanish Crown in 1492 that led to the numerous global expeditions that would change history. These first small expeditions led to several more naval expeditions in Asia, Africa, Australia, and all the way to the Americas. These trips continued into the late 19th
The world we live in today is growing at an extremely fast pace. It seems to be that everyday there are more buildings being built, more concrete being poured, and more free land being destroyed. The cause of these events is the worlds’ population rate. Every day our population reaches an all-time high, every day we gain more mouths to feed, and every day we are losing ways to feed these mouths. Food insecurity has risen significantly along with the rise of our population. We must find ways to lower the food insecurity rate by finding new farming practices, making the public more aware of this issue, and doing more ourselves to make sure that we make a change to this problem.
My determination to be part of Food for Peace is because I hope to acquire more knowledge about food insecurity through the field and I aim to use my experience that I have gathered such as my project management, research, managing skills to support FFP programs on reducing food insecurity. We are all aware that in some scenarios, there’s plenty of food for everyone, but the problem at times is that food and other resources alone are not equally distributed which results to insecurity in many levels. My goal is to help close the food insecurity gap.
When asked the question "who in the United states is food-insecure?" one must first answer the question of what it means to have food security in America. Food security is defined by Edelstein (2010) as "assured access at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life, as well as access to enough food that is safe, nutritious, and acquired in a socially acceptable way." (pg. 71). Hunger would then be considered the absence of food. According to statistics by the Feeding America Organization, in 2014 they reported that 48.1 million Americans where considered to be food-insecure, with 32.8 of them being adults while 15.3 were children (2014). I believe that is also important to characterize where exactly Americans are more likely to be in this category. These same statistics also showed that there was a correlation of region when it came to Americans being more food-insecure. This region was shown to be the southern states of the US, as states like Texas, Kentucky and Louisiana all were in the top
Young Goodman Brown is a religious man that oddly takes a chance for the worst. Goodman Brown leaves his home at the beginning of the story to go exploring into a forest where he is changed by what is happening in the forest. When Goodman Brown leaves at night is significant because at night evil things can happened. The difference between him leaving at night and day is that he knows he shouldn’t be doing what he is doing, because at night more things are unseen. Goodman Brown was pulled in the forest by this devil figure, also he knows he shouldn’t be meeting with devils, because that shows he is leaving his faith and his wife. Goodman Brown was late to the meeting with the devil, and the devil was wondering why he was late so he asked him.
In this article, Barrett begins by defining many terms that are necessary to understand the meaning of food insecurity. The author then starts to investigate how many people globally suffer from not getting the nutrients they need. Many surveys were taken to provide a rough estimate of food-insecure families; the author informs readers of the surveys and the
The US Food system has been likened to a lopsided hourglass; several farmers (producers), few input suppliers/intermediaries (processors), and several consumers. For the food system to be truly sustainable there must be a rational and optimized use of the natural resources that underpin food production and processing, such as labor, land, clean water, energy, and other agricultural inputs. Equally, reducing postharvest losses incurred at the various facets of the food chain howbeit on-farm and beyond the farm gate must be an essential component in any strategy to improve food security without increasing the burden on the natural environment. Failure in this regard would have long-term consequences for the sustainability of food production.
However, in the developing world, food security is often low, because large numbers of people experience dire poverty. Food may be available, but that is irrelevant to those who lack the resources to buy it. This is a major problem in many countries that export food to richer nations. This illustrates the global inequity in food production and distribution that has been difficult to solve or alleviate, despite intense efforts in the latter half of the 20
The United States Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as a “lack of access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” One significant factor that contributes to food insecurity is poverty. Given the relatively high cost of fresh produce and other healthy food, families living at or near the poverty line sometimes
The concept of food security is dynamic, that is continuously incorporated new dimensions and levels of analysis overtime. This ongoing evolution of food security concept indicates the wider recognition of the difficulties of concept in different areas of research and public policy, for the reason that food security issue has long history starting from time when global food crisis take place in the first half of the 1970s (Clay, E. 2002).
Over the years international food prices have been increasing at a rapid rate and though the effects can be seen globally, it of course has affected the low-income population the hardest. In total, millions of the world’s population transitioning into the worlds hungry (Human Development
Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. In 2016 there was a slight increase in the number of households that have food insecurity as a result of the fact that these households have a higher number of children and thus they cannot be able to feed them properly. The number currently stands at 41.2 million; this represents the number of people that do not have food security. It involves both adult and kids. Food insecurity can be attributed to the fact that there are less resources that the family can access so as to ensure food security within their families. This number of food insecure families have resulted into growth of street families since some of the kids and the families may go to the streets to beg so that they can be able get food.
