For the police scenario number one, each police department has their own ethical guidelines for receiving food for free. This department prohibits it. Ethically, you should thank they person who offers the free food, explain to them that you cannot accept that and pay for the food. This will prevent any appearance of improper behavior or the expectancy of favors from the officer at a later time (Albanese, 2012). In the scenario that the food is paid for, it’s all in how you present it. If you have the right attitude, smile and make light, explain that you are not allowed to but you appreciate it anyway, you can do it without offending him. If you accept the free food, it could get back to your department where you may get in trouble
One of the most common gratuities offered to police officers are free meals or meals at a discounted price. This often produces multiple consequences that can result in negative perceptions from the restaurant owner as he or she may expect extra attention to his or her business as a
Jessie, I really enjoyed your post as I have been a police officer for 18 years and it directly relates to my job. Yes, police departments across the country must strive to make their departments more diverse, especially with the rising Hispanic population. One main hindrance to this goal is the fact that many cities are doing away with pension programs and starting hybrid or 401K retirement plans. At my agency, the Knoxville Police Department, we are having problems getting any race to apply because of the new hybrid system. I would recommend offering ride-a-long and cadet programs to attract more minorities to the field. As far as keeping arrest numbers equal to the makeup of the population, there is no way to make this happen
Enactment and enforcement of laws that restrict groups sharing food with homeless persons in public space
On Being a Cop is a completely new breed of a book because it wasn’t intended to be a book. The origin of the book started out as a rookie cop writing emails about his workday to his father—who is also a higher ranking cop in the same department. Although each ‘chapter’ is a new individual story, Jim and Jay Padar’s goals of the book were: to lift the policing’s blue curtain, display the real struggles that officers constantly face, and try to give more of a humanitarian aspect of the job.
On Friday, August 07, 2015, at approximately 1304, I had just called my dispatch center to let them know I was on duty and dispatch advised they had just aired, over the police radio, an officer safety BOLO (Be on the lookout) for a male party, identified as James Michael Leigh, who currently had a warrant for his arrest, out of Durango Colorado, for homicide. According to Dispatch, James was heading north and his cell phone had been pinged just south of Ouray. Dispatch advised me that James might be driving a green Land Rover, bearing Colorado license (280LDQ). As I was driving my patrol car southbound on Main Street, I passed the green Land Rover as it was traveling northbound on Main Street (Highway 550), at about Eighth Avenue. I advised
In today's modern world any use of force, whether deadly in nature or not, is subjected to the scrutiny of the media as well as the court of public opinion. Allegations of the use of excessive force by police departments in the United States continue to dominate the top news sources in the nation. However, citizens never hear of the countless incidents where officers choose to hold fire and display restraint under extreme stress, or decide to instead utilize less than lethal means to achieve their objective. Split-second decisions, even when made under ideal or perfect circumstances, are exceptionally difficult. Even well-trained officers are not consistently able to discharge their firearm, if appropriate, in the time before a suspect holding
If you go out to eat, you can make an extra purchase of food and deliver it to someone you see along the way that doesn’t have the
Gratuity is a discount or a gift / benefit. Gratuities should be not all the time but sometimes. An officer off duty should never take gratuities because he or she is off duty and if he or she is not in uniform then it is really wrong. An officer that is on duty should be no different. All thought, you are not going to argue with the manager or the business owner. Accepting free meals is unethical if the officer thinks that the meal is already paid for or free. When it is acceptable and ethical, an officer should at least attempt to pay for his or her meal. When an officer is given a free meal, he or she should just put money on the table as a tip.
This story is about a family of pirates somewhat steal items of jewelry and mostly food to bring back home to Rhode Island. When she first mentioned she was a daughter of former pirates (first sentence) I was surprised and shocked. I didn’t expect this story to be about stealing, I thought it was about ordering food to go from a restaurant. The relationship between the writer and the subject is that the author experienced the actual story. She and her family "steal" foods, jewelry and other supplies. They put it in a bag and bring what they need and don’t have back where they come from to their home.
With the death of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, NYPD officers feel that they are at crossroads .There is a great amount of disconnect between citizens and police. Predominantly in communities of color. As an American we should be free to state our opinions, even in anger. Our history is not pretty. For instance, disfavored ethnic groups are given a status. Advantage of this power that is with held in the laws hands will continue to be misused if nothing is done about
protection. The courts prioritized the prosecution's argument, understanding that probable cause may be too high of a standard for a police officer to perform a frisk and ensure his safety.
We went for a short volunteer session at first serving lunch/dinner. I, along with my teammates, prepared the dry and cold foods. I cut pastries and placed them on trays to be served shortly after. I was placed on the fork/napkin station, which I was excited about because I would be front and center to interact with the people. On the second day I spent 9 hours there serving preparing and serving breakfast, lunch and dessert. On this day I was able to be a greeter at the front door and briefly talk to people as they entered and offer to take their bags. After lunch the building remained open and they played a movie while I served hundreds of ice cream sandwiches and bottled waters with my other teammates. One man ate 12 ice cream sandwiches! The population being served is adults of all walks of life. There were those that have been homeless for some time, and those that have only been homeless for a few days and even a few that were not homeless. I spoke to one gentlemen about how when he came to the valley he was morbidly obese and had to be taken to the hospital because he was in renal failure, while there he also had to two stents placed. He now states that he is far more aware of his health situation and attempts to take care of himself better. Another man walked in wearing very nice brand new clothes and a Rolex on his wrist. I was able to talk to
The evolution of law enforcement’s use of excessive and deadly force against black males ‘dates back to the 1800’s during the segregation era involving social and inequality issues. In 2010, the National Police Misconduct Reporting Project (NPMRP) reported that nationwide from December through January of 2010, there were approximately 4,681 recorded reports of police misconduct that resulted in 6,286 alleged victims who experienced some form of deadly force by the police, resulting in a debt of $346, 512, 800.00 being spent on misconduct-related civil judgments, settlements, sealed settlements, court costs, and attorney fees. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Arrest-Related Deaths during 2003-2009 within the following states had the highest arrest-related deaths New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington. The states with the lowest arrest-related deaths of black males are: Arkansas, Vermont, Alaska, Wyoming, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, North Dakota, New Hampshire, There is no information provided on a statewide level that provides details of
When I was as a volunteer in Pit-stop, I helped them to peel garlics and distribute food to the homeless people. During the food distribution section, the person in charge told us that we have to be friendly. I was assigned to distribute eggs to the homeless people and the person in charge told me specifically that ‘one person, one egg’ and other food can be refilled. So, I have to be extra attention when distributing the eggs and if the homeless people ask for more, I have to tell them politely that one person only can take one.
In the jungle, there are many ways in which it has influenced the food and drug laws. In the book, it talks about the poor food and the way that the food has been made. This writing has paved the way for the food and drug laws.
