My community health volunteer project consisted of a group of ladies and myself. Kristin (our fearless leader), Erica (her “twin” sister), Julie (the tall one), Kallie (the new Yorker - enough said), and myself (the guy - referred to as just one of the gals). Kristin worked hard emailing and calling many different organizations attempting to secure volunteer time for us. We originally wanted to work with children in some capacity and eventually found what seems like a great organization called Gigi’s Playhouse. Gigi’s is across the street from Scottsdale Shea Hospital. I’ve worked at the hospital 3-1/2 years and never knew Gigi’s existed. We went for a short volunteer session at first serving lunch/dinner. I, along with my teammates, prepared the dry and cold foods. I cut pastries and placed them on trays to be served shortly after. I was placed on the fork/napkin station, which I was excited about because I would be front and center to interact with the people. On the second day I spent 9 hours there serving preparing and serving breakfast, lunch and dessert. On this day I was able to be a greeter at the front door and briefly talk to people as they entered and offer to take their bags. After lunch the building remained open and they played a movie while I served hundreds of ice cream sandwiches and bottled waters with my other teammates. One man ate 12 ice cream sandwiches! The population being served is adults of all walks of life. There were those that have been homeless for some time, and those that have only been homeless for a few days and even a few that were not homeless. I spoke to one gentlemen about how when he came to the valley he was morbidly obese and had to be taken to the hospital because he was in renal failure, while there he also had to two stents placed. He now states that he is far more aware of his health situation and attempts to take care of himself better. Another man walked in wearing very nice brand new clothes and a Rolex on his wrist.
