On the morning of September 11th, 2001, four planes were hijacked in mid-flight. These planes were hijacked by multiple terrorists, who planned to conduct suicide attacks on America. Soon after the planes were hijacked, the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, tragically killing everyone on the plane and killing hundreds on the floors of the World Trade Center. 1,402 deaths occurred in the North Tower, and 87 deaths occurred inside Flight 11 (the plane that crashed into the North Tower.) Immediately after the first attack, NYPD and FDNY forces dispatched units to the scene, and President George W. Bush was alerted. At the time, he was in a Florida elementary school, reading to children. As evacuation processes happened throughout the South Tower of the WTC, the second hijacked …show more content…
In response to the second attack, the FAA banned all takeoffs of flights going to NYC or around the city, and the Port Authority closed all bridges and tunnels in the NYC area. Next, President George W. Bush gave a statement from Florida, responding to the attacks, calling them an “apparent terrorist attack on our country.” Only 6 minutes after his initial statement did the third attack occur, and it was on the Pentagon. Hijackers crashed Flight 77, the third plane, into the western side of the Pentagon, killing 59 on board and 125 people inside the building. Consequently, the FAA grounds all flights over or bound for the United States, and sends thousands of commercial flights and private planes to airports in Canada and the U.S. Additionally, the White House, Capitol, and other high-profile places are evacuated as well, in case of another attack. In the late morning, passengers aboard Flight 93, the fourth hijacked plane, are alerted of the attacks by friends and family. In response to that, they panic and try to fight the hijackers to retake the
Found on Celebrity Airlines Flight 82181 were a number of substances brought on by passengers. Given that the crash was ruled a terrorist attack, identification of all substances found on and in the bodies and luggages of the victims needed to be made. To do this, empirical and molecular formulas were put into use when determining substance identities. Each substance was tested to find the percent composition of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, and then used to find the empirical formula of the substance by using 100 grams of each substance to represent 100% made up by the elements combined. The mass of each element in the substance calculated from the percent was then divided by the molar mass of that
On September 11,2001, disaster struck. Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 different planes. The first plane he hijacked was headed to the north tower of The World Trade Center. The second plane was headed to the south tower of The World Trade Center. The third plane was headed to the Pentagon. The fourth and final plane was headed to the White House.
As millions were watching the events unfold in New York, American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., and crashed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. Jet fuel from the Boeing 757 caused a overwhelming firestorm that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the enormous concrete building. All told, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) It was initially thought that this plane was bound for the White House or the Capitol Building; however, because of lack of visibility coming from the west as it did objects obscured these targets making the terrorists change their plans and crash into the Pentagon. (Limbacher, 2001)
At 9:12 on Flight 77, staff and passengers contacted their family and friends and air traffic control that the plane had been hijacked. Approximately at 9:36, Secret Service agents evacuate the White House employees to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. The reason they evacuated the White House is because the authorities were expecting that another hijacked plane was going to attack either the White House or the Capitol (9/11 MEMORIAL - September 11 Attack Timeline, pages 20, 22-23). At 9:37, hijackers crash Flight 77 into the Pentagon’s western facade, killing the fifty-nine on board the plane and one hundred twenty-five military and civilian personnel inside the Pentagon. This had been the third attack on the United States within fifty-one minute. To help the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) find the hijacked planes, they ground all flights over, or bound for, the continental United States. At approximately 9:59, after burning for a total of fifty-nine minutes, the South Tower collapses within ten seconds killing many rescue workers and responders (9/11 MEMORIAL - September 11 Attacks Timeline, pages 24-25,28). Around 10:15, the damaged section of the Pentagon’s outermost offices, known as the E ring, collapses. No on was injured. At 10:28, the North Tower collapses after burning for one hundred two minutes, killing about 1,400 people in the building and the surrounding area (9/11 MEMORIAL - September 11 Attack Timeline,
On September 11th 2001, the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out terrorist attacks against the United States. Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center twin towers. The third hit the Pentagon outside Washington, and the final plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed as a result, and this tragic event defined the presidency of George W. Bush (History.com Staff). Shortly after the attacks, President Bush delivered a powerful speech that helped unify the American people, defy the terrorists, and call the citizens to action. In his 9/11 speech, President Bush successfully uses rhetorical devices to address the terrorism, unite people, and give hope to his audience.
A group of hijackers took control over four commercial jets flying out of the airport of the US. Two aircraft directed towards the direction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York. All evidence that was found led to a radical Sunni Islamist group al-Qaeda being the culprit of 9/11. The attack represented a symbol; US’s power and influence collapsing like the Twin Towers, both having 110 floors collapsing causing extensive damaged to the area which surrounds them. Various other buildings were also destroyed in the wreckage of these towers. The total count of lives lost during 9/11 was close to approximately 3000 inclusive of the 19 who hijacked the plane. It was a record of lives loss based on the terrorist incident on US soil. The destruction of these two towers transformed the perspectives of the US forever, significant effect on world economic markets and confidence in the US immediately decreased. George W. Bush noted the horrific events of the attack as “evil, despicable acts of terror” (BBC 2001), causing fear amongst the people of the world leading to the change, in the face of terrorism
September 11, 2001 was a tragic part of history for the United States of America. On September 11, four planes crashed down by hijackers at the Pentagon, the Twin Towers, and a Pennsylvania field. The Pentagon and World Trade Center were the primary buildings where the Al Qaeda wanted to attack. The White House was another target, however they never made it. Later that night, President George W. Bush gave a speech about 9/11 in the Oval Office. George W. Bush inspired America of their safety and security of his confident tone, religious beliefs, word choice.
Immediately following Flight 11 crashing into the North Tower of the World Trade Center reactionary plans were enacted by the United States Secret Service to safe guard the President, who was at a Florida Elementary School at the time of the attack. Initial plans were to return the President to the White
The September 11 assaults (often referred to as 9/11) involved a series of four organised terrorist assaults by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda in the United States on the Tuesday morning of, September 11, 2001. The assaults comprised of suicide attacks that were used to target popular U.S landmarks. This atrocity was carried out by 19 terrorists from the east coast of America, where they hijacked four airlines, which they later crashed into the twin towers in New York City. Two American airline planes: flight 11 and flight 175 crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Centre and within 2 hours collapsed also affected 10 other buildings located in the same vicinity. A third plane flew into the United States department of defence building, more commonly known as the Pentagon. Lastly the fourth plane steered towards Washington D.C, the passengers became aware about the other attacks and they tried to intervene, this caused the plane crash into a field near Pennsylvania. It was the deadliest incident for fire –fighters and law enforcement
On September 11, 2001 the United States became ground for numerous terrorist attacks, killing many innocent Americans. One of the attacks included the crashing of United Airlines Flight 93. The plan crashed at 10:03 A.M into a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania at 580 mph. It was Boeing 757 that held 37 passengers and 7 crew members that all were killed from the crash. The flights path was originally suppose to fly from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco, California, until four Muslim Hijackers took control of the plane and were headed toward Washington D.C (Avery). The passengers were frightened for their lives and several were able to make phone calls to their families to say their last goodbyes before the crash. When the passengers were
On September 11, 2001, the Islamist terrorist group known as al-Qaeda launched a series of terrorist attacks on the United States of America, specifically in the New York City and Washington D.C areas. Nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes with the intention of using them as suicide attacks that would crash those planes into designated buildings, or targets. Two of the four passenger jets were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, both of which collapsed entirely within two hours of being hit. The third plane was crashed into the Pentagon, and the west side of the building, which is the
On September 11’th 2001 on the morning hijacked by 19 Arab men 4 aircraft were all heading towards California, and used them as suicide missiles. They flew into the World Trade Center two twin towers, the Pentagon and after a long struggle with passengers crashed last down on a field. World Trade Center consisted of seven buildings, three of the buildings collapsed and the four others were damaged by the other collapsed. It is believed that the 19 Arab men, was led by the Egyptian Mohammed Atta (1968-2001) 5.
September 11, 2001, will forever be remembered as a day of tragedy for the United States as an act of terrorism killed roughly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, and 200 at the Pentagon. Terrorists hijacked four separate aircraft that day, two planes were crashed into the north and south tower of the World Trade Center in New York, one was crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia, and the last one crashed into a field where it was believed that passengers disrupted the hijackers, causing the aircraft to crash before reaching its target. Both towers eventually fell, and this attack brought about the beginning of many changes for the United States, that had a ripple effect onto other nations. On September 20th, Bush called for an emergency joint session of the US Congress where he announced the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (MacFarlane, P. J., 2017). Along with this new department came the development of several measures that were implemented to prevent future attacks. Although the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were devastating and caused turmoil and unrest for the United States, even to present day, there were some positive outcomes to be had from this event.
On September 11, 2001, members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes. At 8:45 in the morning, an American Airlines plane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Hundreds of people were killed instantly, and hundreds more were trapped in the burning building. It was thought to be only a freak accident. Less than twenty minutes later, a United Airlines plane crashed into the south tower. It was no longer an accident, but an attack. Later on that morning the third plane hit the Pentagon, and passengers overtook the last plane and crashed it into a field in Pennsylvania. The combined damage from all four planes resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 people, and injuries to another 10,000. Only six people who were
September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
