Feudalism in Europe and Japan Throughout history, the system of feudalism is used several times in different areas in the world. Because of this form of government, the European lifestyle changed dramatically as the Japanese culture began to form. Although feudalism in Europe had started earlier, the feudal systems of Japan and Europe are somewhat alike. However, they are much more different than they are comparable.
It is surprising that the feudal system in Japan is similar to the feudalism in Europe because during feudal Japan, it was isolated from the rest of the world until later on, which meant that Japan was not influenced by the European feudal system. Both feudal systems were developed as a response to the need of security and

This also led to being influenced differently. The Japanese culture during Feudal Japan was only influenced by the Tang Dynasty in China before the system of feudalism took place. However, feudal Europe was influenced by the Byzantine Empire, the Germanic tribes that constantly invaded them, and the Church. Influences often led to the thoughts women¡¯s power in societies. Women in Japan were to be thought as equal and honorable as men. They were used as spies, disguised as geishas. They were able to lead their own troops and the poor women had to work alongside with men. They were able to become nuns or shrine maidens called mikos. Women in Europe were thought of as weak creatures unless they were nobles. However, the noble women¡¯s powers began to decline as the Church tried to gain more power. The Church held the largest amount of land in Europe and it considered itself eligible to have political power. Religion did not play a major role in politics. Japan was only affected when Christianity had threatened the politics and economy so it was banned.
Feudalism in Japan and Europe are different. Although feudalism arose because both societies were in need for security and stability, feudalism in Japan arose because of civil rivalry while feudalism in Europe arose because of invasions. The systems were the same because the lords had to lessen their responsibilities and required armies to protect them. Trust was needed between lords and their
The Magna Carta, alike to the bill of rights and the constitution, gave power to the people and listed their rights. This introduced the first parliament, and could be thought of as the beginning of democracy. Feudalism in Japan was like to Europe's but there are a some differences. The top three parts of the pyramid were the same, the lower class was different. Japan put the status of peasants higher than merchants, because peasants and
Feudalism was a political, social system that controlled how the classes of people were structured. In other words, how people were respected and who they respected. During this time, in Europe, knights were the protectors who rode on horseback(OI). In Japan, samurai were the warriors and loyal servants who protected their country. The similarities between the knights and samurai warriors were greater than the differences.
For both Europe and Japan, feudalism was a social ranking where knights were middle ranking and would get land and pay from lords and daimyos. In exchange, the warriors had to fight and defend the lords and daimyos. As said before, the fighters were middle ranking so they were above the serf, or peasants, but below the lords and daimyos (Doc. A). Likewise, the samurai and knights would give the peasants and slaves food and shelter in exchange for labor services (OI). Here is another reason of why the knights and samurai’ similarities were greater than their
From approximately 1000- 1600 CE, the knights and Samurai were the muscue and the soul of the warrior class. The warriors of Europe were called knight and the warriors of Japan were called samurai. Both of the groups were focus on the Codes , Armor and Feudalism. The Similarities between the knights and samurai were greater than the differences To begin, both the knights and samurai had armour to protect themselves in battle.
In ancient Europe and Japan, life was relatively tranquil. However, this peace disintegrated as aggressive tribes invaded and power struggles erupted. To keep order and restore the peace, feudalism developed in both regions. Feudalism was a system in which large landowning lords gave land to lesser lords (vassals) in exchange for loyalty and service. The vassals were often part of a professional warrior class, known as knights in Europe and samurai in Japan.
Both Japan and Western Europe practiced feudalism and they were both unusually successful in industrial development. They are both also proven adept at running capitalist economies, so the political accomplishments of both Japan and Western Europe have matched their economic achievements.
Social Positions: The first area of important similarities in Japan and Europe where social positions. In document A - The social pyramids showed how the societies were structured, in Japan and Europe. The samurai and the knight’s were always above the peasants and the traders/ merchants. Then on top of the samurai’s and the knights were the Daimyos or the Lesser Lords. Next in the social pyramid it has the lord or the Shogun. In Europe, they have a King then the Pope, in Japan they have an emperor. These similarities are significant because they show how feudalism is in both Japan and Europe.
The Feudal System The Feudal System is the system that controlled how people lived in Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries. It also determined who were more respected than others. The order from, highest to lowest on the structure was the Pope, Kings and Queens, Lords and Ladies, Priests and Monks, Knights, merchants and farmers, and peasants. Those higher on the structure lived in better houses, wore better clothing and lived a healthier life than those lower on the structure.
European feudalism was based on contract and Japanese feudalism was based on personal relationship with the lord and vassal. This helps prove that the differences between European and Japanese feudalism made limited government more likely to develop in the West because a contract limits what the lords and vassals could do. William, the king of English, said, “I command you [the vassal] to summon all those who are under your charge......and bring ready with you those five knights that you owe me[.]”1 This helps prove that European feudalism was based on contract because when you owe someone something, it implies an agreement. The key terms are I command you and owe. The vassal has to send troops because he has to. He is under the rule of
As individual European countries scrambled to gain more territory to add to their Empires, Japan feared the changes that visiting countries brought. When other countries visited Japan with imports to trade they also brought with them a new religion, Christianity. Japanese Emperors feared the chaos that a new religion would bring and decided to shut the rest of the world out. Only the Dutch were allowed to trade with the Japanese as a need remained to be informed of the rest of the world and medical advances.
There are many similarities and differences between Feudal Japan and Feudal Europe. The points of compare and contrast can be seen politically, economically, and socially. Both Feudal Japan and Feudal Europe have codes of honor. The values within the code of honor are different. Japan believed in Bushido which promotes loyalty and honor until death.
Feudalism was a contrasting system dealing with political and military relationships existing among members of the higher social class, Kings, Lords and other owners of large lands in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. The Feudal system started by the granting of fiefs, chiefly in the form of land and labor, in return the lord would receive political and
During the middle ages both Europe and Japan experienced feudalism. The feudal system in both social structures was very similar and different. The system of feudalism in Europe and Japan was a system that had similar roles for the nobles, and the peasants. Both cultures had warriors who defended the people of our country. They follow certain codes of honor. The feudal system has many similarities but also consisted of many differences.
In Medieval times during the 10th and 13th centuries, a form of political and social organization called feudalism was a way of life that had great effect on people of the time and on the modern world. Feudalism was developed because of the weakness of Europe and it's kings. The word feudalism comes from the word fief, which was the land held on condition of feudal service, similar to an estate (English). The fiefs bound together lords and vassals. Feudalism was a structure in which a lord divided his land into smaller parts to give to lesser lords (“Feudalism”).
European feudal institutions revolved around political and military relationships. The feudal political order developed into a complicated network of lord-vassal relationships, with lords having overlords, and overlords owing allegiance to kings. On these foundations early kingdoms, such as England and France, were built, but in other areas, such as modern-day Germany, the feudal organization remained highly decentralized.
