Friendship is a relationship between two or more people who have a mutual understanding with one another when it comes to trust and support. A friendship is when you have someone that you can rely on all the time, someone who does not judge you, someone who is always honest with you, and someone who does not turn their back on you. Friendships are tested every day, whether it being from jealously, disloyalty, dishonesty, or even betrayal. In order for friendship to work out you must be able to communicate with each other, be able to tell each other the truth without becoming defensive, respect one another, and also understand and support each other to the fullest. In the play, Fences, the friendships between the characters can relate to realistic …show more content…
Like every father and son relationship, these two have their issues. Cory does not get along nor respect his father for many reasons. Cory is trying to pursue his dreams as a professional athlete Troy shuts them down. Troy has been in this position before and as a parent he feels as though he needs to protect his son from his dreams not coming true. This results in Cory becoming very upset and angry with Troy. Between Cory and Troy’s relationship, they are challenged with respect and betrayal. In most father and son relationships, a son looks up to their father for a lot. They confide in them for advice, approval, and support. A relationship with a father is very important because there is only so much you can learn from a mother that a father needs to teach their child. Cory did not respect his father because he did not support his dreams and he betrayed his mother. He therefore favored his mother over his father because he felt she was supportive of him and his dreams. Since Cory does not respect Troy and talks to him disrespectfully, Troy kicks him out the house and forces him to live on his own. “You just another nigger on the street to me!” says Troy (Hannah, pg. 230). At this point, Troy is completely fed up with Cory. Many relationships like Cory and Troy’s are not resolved unless the two talk amongst themselves and work the problems out. Before they are able to do so, Troy later dies and Cory …show more content…
A best friend is that person who is always there for you no matter what, someone who keeps all your secrets, and looks out for your best interest. They are not only best friends but also coworkers so they see each other almost every day. “…male relationships are likely to be based on enjoyable companionship and similarity in attitudes...” (Richey, pg. 536). Male friendships tend to differ from female relationships. Bono and Troy are challenged with loyalty and distance within their relationship. Bono can be considered Troy’s conscience because he is always looking out for him. Bono asks Troy multiple times about a woman named Alberta. Bono knows something is going on with Troy and the woman but Troy denies it every time. He eventually confesses to Bono about his affair with this woman. Bono keeps the secret to himself but urges Troy to end it with Alberta because he has a wife and family at home. Bono is an example of that best friend who keeps his friend’s secrets no matter what but at the same time looks out for him by telling him to stop what he’s doing to keep himself out of trouble and sticky situations. Bono has always had Troy’s best interest throughout their friendship. Troy is eventually promoted to driver which puts him in a different route as Bono. This results in a Troy and Bono growing apart, the distance in their friendship grows more and more, although they still remain friends they are not as close as
Troy’s misuse of power in his relationship with Bono causes their relationship to be ruined. In their friendship Troy is the friend who tells Bono what the right thing to do is. Bono look up to Troy and he learned a lot of things from Troy that he can use in the future. In the beginning of the play Bono says, “ I’m like you… I aint got no time for them kind of people” (2). “I’m like you” suggests Bono believes that he can handle situations just like Troy can but Bono really can not because standing up for himself is a struggle. Mentally, Troy is stronger than Bono, but Bono tries his best to agree with Troy and do whatever he do. But, Towards the end of the story, the soft Bono we knew of finally stood up to Troy. Bono saya “you’s in control… that's what you tell me all the time. You responsible for what you do”, Bono says this to Troy in their conversation about Rose. The phrase “ You’s in control”, states that Troy is always in control of everything he do and he only take responsibility for the things that we want to take responsibilities in, according to Bono. The conversation between Troy and Cory was significant because usually Troy talks down to Bono, but now Bono is talking down to Troy. This is a change for Bono and the reader because Bono would never stand up to Troy and Bono finally expressed his feelings. After the disagreement between Troy and Cory, Troy loses his close friend because of his misuse in power within their relationship.
Each time that Troy speaks to his wife, he asserts a sense of male dominance over her. While having a conversation with Bono, he tells her to “go on back in the house and let me and Bono finish what we was talking about. This is men talk. I got some talk for you later. You know what kind of talk I mean. You go on and powder it up”(1.1.83-85). Although Troy shows compassion to Rose, he repeatedly shows disrespect to her by referring to her as woman, giving her orders to follow, and publicizing their love life to his friends. Troy’s relationship with Cory is tense at the least throughout the play; therefore, when Cory claims that his father does not like him, Troy’s aggression
No, I do not believe Cory will become like his father. Troy didn’t show Cory any affection, and all Cory wanted was for his dad to support him. Troy and Cory didn’t have a good relationship. Although Cory showed similar interests as his father, like sports, I don’t see Cory having his father’s authoritarian parenting style. In the story Troy wouldn’t sign Cory permission slip to play football, all Cory wanted was a better life for himself. Troy seems like a father that wanted respect from his children but wasn’t responsive to their needs. When Troy died Cory didn’t want to go to his father funeral. He eventually went to the funeral, and that showed the readers he was a better person than his father, because Cory was able to finally forgive
Cory was going down the same path Troy went down with sports, and Troy knows this will hurt him in the long run, so he made Cory get a job and do his chores. This makes Cory build up a work ethic and it also teaches him respect and how to deal with bad bosses and people being racist and unfair. A example of this is when Troy tells Cory he will have to quit football if he can't keep up the job and his chores. Cory needed to get a trade, not a talent which means he needs to be good at something people can't segregate, and something people need. Cory needs to get his head clear, and Troy takes him out of football, and this makes Cory very mad but it is for the best.
Troy’s everlasting impact on Cory and Rose is one that carried on throughout his life and after his death. To his son Cory, he instilled fear into him, ripping his dreams and individuality away from him at a young age until he could no longer stand for it. Troy controlled his life, fearing that Cory would make it further, or not make it at all. Either way, the outcomes Cory would have had living under Troy’s roof while making his own decisions was unacceptable to him, so he ruined those opportunities. He refused to let Cory join the football team even if it meant he would be able to go to college, he refused to give Cory any support besides financial support, and he refused to be a proper father; to love and care for Cory.
If troy doesn’t solve things within himself and with his family, things can only get worse and Troy will lose everything. Moreover, he even showed envy towards Corey, because he was better educated, got good grades, worked a job and still found time to practice football. He certainly had more chances than Troy had growing up. Still, Troy was not proud of Cory, he leaves home just like his father did. The family could've tried harder to make things work, but this did not happen because of the dysfunction and Troy “dies suddenly after swinging a bat in the backyard,"he suddenly fell over”.
In addition, Cory should forgive Troy because he did respect, think highly, and love his children, he just didn’t know how to show it due to his past trauma as a child. Troy talks about the effects of his childhood on multiple occasions. From his mother leaving suddenly when he was eight, to his father in essence, trying to sexually assault his girlfriend, and his father not being emotionally present. In short, Troy has been through a lot and all these specific moments reiterate the idea of tough love and independence for Troy. These traumatizing moments affect the way Troy interacts with his kids, specifically Cory.
The father is trying to help his son avoid the pain of rejection that he himself experienced decades earlier” (Saunders 1). Baseball should present fathers and sons with a bonding experience, But Cory knew he couldn’t compete with His father. Troy has a need for control. He gains the need of control from his own father, he is too deep-rooted for him to control his ways. Although he means the best for Cory, Troy's ends up losing his son, he ends up dying without having ever seen Cory again. After eighteen years of marriage, Troy feels he needs to escape the enclosing walls of responsibility through an affair with another woman. The other woman, Alberta, is Troy's attempt to express what has been lost which is his youth. For example, “If Troy is now too old to play major league baseball, he is not too old to be attractive to other women” (Wilson). That’s what Troy thought when he was seeing this other woman behind Rose's
Troy's then made his life revolve around work and his family; he put his dreams of becoming a major league baseball player aside. He went into working and became a garbage man; he realized that he needed a steady income to provide for his family and to purchase the house that they live in. Even in the work place Troy wants to excel and make a stand for himself, talking to the commissioner about being a driver of one of the garbage trucks. Troy argued for blacks to drive the garbage trucks, but he doesn't know how to drive or even have a license. Troy acts out to try and better his black community and to try and break the barrier between whites and blacks. When Troy confronts Rose about his affair with Alberta, Rose becomes very angry with Troy. Rose is a stronger person than Troy, despite what she lets him think. She makes this extremely apparent when Troy tells her about the affair. "All of a sudden it's "we," where was "we" at when you was down there rolling around with some god forsaken woman? "We" should have come to an understanding before you started making a damn fool of yourself. You're a day late and a dollar short when it comes to an understanding with me." Troy realizes that the affair causes much disrespect to his wife and family. One day while visiting his wife Rose, they receive a call at the
Troy leads to his own downfall by ruining his relationship with Cory, cheating on Rose, and losing his best friend Bono. Troy discourages Cory’s dream of going to college, ruining their relationship. Troy’s preconceived notions of the world clash with Cory’s ambitions to better his life. According to Ama Wattley’s article “Father-Son
Now, for my favorite part of the whole scene when Cory asked his father why he didn’t ever like him. Troy’s initial reaction was startling to say the least, he opened “who in the hell said I gotta like you”. His father then tells him to come over here and straighten up when he is talking to him. He goes on to explain that he feeds Cory every day, puts a roof over his head, and puts clothes on his back. When asked why Troy does this for his son, Cory replies with “Cause you like me”. Troy explodes with anger and tells Cory that it’s his job to like him, its job to do right by him. He proceeds to
Cory is very aware that his father is envious of his athletic accomplishments. Troy also has no respect for Lyons and he does not support his dream to be a musician.
Since Troy dad wasn’t the best dad parenting wasn’t the easiest thing for troy to do. He didn’t realize it takes a lot of patients in being a parent, He had to worry about his son now let alone himself. Troy maybe didn’t show it the best but he loved Cory more than he loved his self because at the end of the day all he wanted for Cory is what he thought would be best for
One of the differences that complicate their relationship is that they have grown up in completely different time periods. A great deal has happened between the times when Troy was growing to the time period that Cory is growing up in. This issue itself causes many other concerns. For instance, Cory is a very talented athlete. He would like to play football in college and would probably receive a scholarship
It is obvious to the audience that Troy and Cory simply do not get along. The two are constantly bickering, mostly about Cory's dream to play football at the college level. Since playing baseball did not get Troy anywhere, he feels that football will not benefit Cory and that Cory should "get recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living" (8). Troy constantly denounces Cory's dream and pressures his son to quit the highschool football team so that he can work at the local grocery store. The verbal abuse of Cory by Troy is enough to make Cory question whether or not his own father even likes him, but it is not until after Troy's affair with Alberta is out in the open that Troy and Cory's unhealthy relationship reaches a whole new level.
