Troy's Misuse Of Power In Fences By August Wilson

Thesis: Although people often think that power in a relationship is shared, in Fences August Wilson suggests that when power is misused relationships are destroyed.

Troy’s misuse of power in his relationship with Bono causes their relationship to be ruined. In their friendship Troy is the friend who tells Bono what the right thing to do is. Bono look up to Troy and he learned a lot of things from Troy that he can use in the future. In the beginning of the play Bono says, “ I’m like you… I aint got no time for them kind of people” (2). “I’m like you” suggests Bono believes that he can handle situations just like Troy can but Bono really can not because standing up for himself is a struggle. Mentally, Troy is stronger than Bono, but Bono tries his best to agree with Troy and do whatever he do. But, Towards the end of the story, the soft Bono we knew of finally stood up to Troy. Bono saya “you’s in control… that's what you tell me all the time. You responsible for what you do”, Bono says this to Troy in their conversation about Rose. The phrase “ You’s in control”, states that Troy is always in control of everything he do and he only take responsibility for the things that we want to take responsibilities in, according to Bono. The conversation between Troy and Cory was significant because usually Troy talks down to Bono, but now Bono is talking down to Troy. This is a change for Bono and the reader because Bono would never stand up to Troy and Bono finally expressed his feelings. After the disagreement between Troy and Cory, Troy loses his close friend because of his misuse in power within their relationship.
Later in the story we learn that the misuse of Troy’s power not only lead him into losing a friend, but he lose his lover. Troy and Rose separated at the end of the story because Troy’s misuse of power led him into taken advantage Rose. Rose stated “ What about me? When’s my time to enjoy life?”( 74). The phrase “What about me”, shows how Rose finally stands up to Troy by questioning him, the questions she ask also express her feelings about Troy treat her. Rose feel as though if Troy can go out and have fun or do what he want to do so can she. Once Troy realize he does not have as much power over
