Fences August Wilson Character Analysis

The play Fences by August Wilson was showcased at the Nevada Conservatory Theater. The play had a well structured plot, it was casted decently, and there were also a few mistakes. The plot centered around around the many issues which African American families face in the 1950s. This included racism and the strain that these prejudices had on the family structure. The fence was a symbol that was integrated in the play that helped demonstrate the way which the main character, Troy Maxson, would enclose himself and his family from these issues; unfortunately this enclosure hindered his son’s, Cory, opportunities. Being such a big symbol of the play, I believe the actors incorporated the fence and the idea of the fence into the scenes in just the right amount of times. The cast seemed to be the correct age as to the characters they were playing. Although all actors performed well, there was an uncomfortable level of difference in method of acting between the older actors and the younger actors. The first was when Troy threw the bottle of liquor to his coworker, Mr. Bono, and Mr. Bono drops it. Although he plays it off and swiftly picks up the bottle, he looks up to the audience and smiled. He broke the fourth wall, making the incident obvious. Another accident was when Cory was cutting the wood for the fence and the saw got stuck to the point where he was unable to remove it. He stops in the middle of his line and looks up to Troy, who walks over and helps him remove it. I think this could have been played out more smoothly if it were not for Cory’s look of distress. The last incident was when the little girl falls off the porch. This is an understandable incident as it is difficult to deal with children, but possibly a bit more practice could have prevented
