The most effective way to prevent Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is with the vaccine. Though the FeLV vaccine is not 100% effective, if the feline contracts the virus, the infection will be short lived and the feline will rarely develop the clinical disease. It is recommended that kittens be vaccinated at 9-10 weeks old, another dose 3-4 weeks later, and then every year after.
In the event that the feline is infected with FeLV, the feline should be kept indoors and away from other cats, even if the other cats have the vaccine. Options for treating the feline include, Euthanasia, isolation, and relocation. Isolation would be an easier option. The cat should be kept in a separate room with its own food and water bowl, and also have its own litter
