Fawzia Koofi, a woman born and raised in Afghan conflict, struggled her whole life to get the education and influence she has now. Fawzia focuses on human rights, especially those of women and children. Growing up in a culture that denied the rights of woman, she had to work three times as hard to receive her law degree and membership of parliament. She promotes women and girls' education by advocating for access to good schools, as well as creating opportunities for non formal education. In a time where civil conflicts have caused migration, and new reforms making it harder to enter the US, hearing the point of view of someone who has lived in civil conflict as well as one who has made political advancements, would inspire many to stand up

I want to start out by saying that Janet Fazio is my current favorite person. I’ll explain. But first a little background for any new readers: I’m a new mom and triathlete (still breastfeeding) of an 11-month-old daughter (who does not yet sleep through the night) who works full-time (pumps at least two times a day), commutes three days a week, and owns a high-energy Vizsla dog that needs 5 to 10 miles of exercise per day. Over the course of American history, from the time of the American Revolution to today, there have been countless fights for rights waged by different groups of individuals. From racial rights, to gender rights, to rights of opinion, life styles, or religion, every century has been marked by a variety of prejudices, injustices, and inequalities. People who have been deprived of their basic rights as citizens and treated unfairly have to stand up to opposing voices, cruel actions, and humiliation time and again, in order to gain equal rights. Though some fights are lost, at least at first, the fact that some are won show that our country will listen to people’s voices and are willing to change.
American history consistently provides narratives of courageous leaders who, motivated by the intolerability of their current situation, bring about significant change.
While, many of these discords were experienced since the beginning of time as he states “Even God’s chosen people were plagued by secession in the promised land, which resulted in strife and ultimately, war” (McClure 1886), it is poignant that not much has changed.
