The course study material provided a plethora of information regarding America’s early history during the first hundred plus years, which only confirmed that the early Americans got many things right, and in fact, set the pace for many more extraordinary achievements to come. However, what impressed me more than anything was their tenacity as well as their ingenuity, which I feel was an integral key to how they accomplished all that they did, with at times, minimal resources, at best. I believe A.K. McClure said it best when he said “Our very own nation is not without the bloodshed of our founding fathers, but it was through that suffering and those hardships that the most magnanimous government was established” (McClure 1886).
While the Civil War was the most tragic of wars to occur on American soil to date, based on the events leading to its onset, it is hard to deny its inevitability. Yet, there is no doubt that the Civil War had a significant impact on our history and set the course for the many needed changes that so many were unsure how to address. While, many of these discords were experienced since the beginning of time as he states “Even God’s chosen people were plagued by secession in the promised land, which resulted in strife and ultimately, war” (McClure 1886), it is poignant that not much has changed. However, as mentioned in our presentation “Ours is an exceptional nation of a self-governing people in a fallen world dedicated in the pursuit of liberty and equality” (Bringing it all together 2017).
