My English Failures and Accomplishments My last English class was English 2. English has never been the easiest subject for me. Through much trial and error I have overcome some things, yet fail to overcome others. While I am strong in being able to correct the mistakes I make in my writing, I need to strengthen my abilities in setting up my essay and finally overcome the difficulty I have with my reading comprehension skills. Understanding a topic or passage that I will have to write about later is a key component of being a good writer. When I read a passage and do not comprehend its actual meaning, it can make writing about it very difficult. Last year, I took English 2 and it was the year we had to take the state English test and write about a prompt. To prepare for the test, our teacher would give us different prompts and different styles of papers to write. Throughout the year I learned how to come up with my own ideas to write about with that …show more content…
If given a prompt, I can get most of my ideas down on paper, but as soon as I am ready to write the paper, I am not able to align my ideas to where the paper flows smoothly. While preparing for the state test, our class would complete practice tests and our teacher would grade based upon whether we stayed on topic throughout the paper. I was not fortunate enough to have a teacher that would take the time to explain in detail what I did wrong and show me how to fix it. A couple of weeks before the test was when she started getting frustrated with us because we were not writing on the level that we should have been on. I was dumbfounded as to why she was getting angry with us because we couldn’t write in the correct manner. Is it not her job to show us how? Through that scenario, which I hope to grow from, I gained confidence by realizing that I am able to edit my paper in a way that will correct my
Also, I look at what would be a good story to tell on the topic that was provided or your own topic. Plus, some people can get confused on what they are trying to write about and would start to get frustrated and panic, which happens to many students. But I think the most confusion thing of all is trying to understand what you need to write about and how to set up a layout to start planning your paper, which could help you later when you are ready to write/type up your paper. This method had help many students and it even helps me some times when I’m stuck and don’t know where to start. In addition, when you write your paper it is not always going to come out right the first time. There will be many draft or pre- reviewing of your friends or students in class, which could help because sometimes you don’t check your own corrections that probably needs to get changed or fixed. This has helped me with both of the major essays that I had worked on in class because I have a problem with spelling the right word that I’m trying to say but sometimes that doesn’t always happen and I usely have to go back and fix those
During this semester, the realization of my past was that I have often skimmed through parts of the writing process to get the job done. Not being an avid reader often hindered my writing abilities. This class most definitely made me realize that the entire writing process is important and having peer reviews also helped significantly and certainly made a difference in the result of my work. Taking the time to read, brainstorm my thoughts, write an outline, rough draft after rough draft, reading constructive criticism of others helped in the revisions of my papers’ reaching the best possible outcome. When selecting English 102, I knew I would be challenged, but to what extent I was unsure. If like past English courses that were taken learning to write essays would be the goal. Once realizing that my work would be shared with others, providing informed information
Many students have struggled with essays for their English class. They have difficulties due to many issues, the least of which are poor writing skills. Each person has their own area of writing which gives them the most trouble. If this lack of skill is not addressed then a student can be certain that his or her grade will fall. Personally, I have the most difficulty with conclusions, transitions, and comma usage. To address these issues I conducted research and found three effective sources; The Little seagull Handbook, Smart-words.org, and grammar.ccc.commnet.edu. These three sources assisted me in improving each of my three skills, which I struggle with.
English classes are very important if you want to pursuit your academic goal, and there are a lot of things that I learned about academic writing in this semester. At first, I thought that it was going to be easy as long as I kept doing my brief assignments on time and showing up in classes. However, I was wrong, English is hard, especially if you are an international student because the methods of writing an essay are different. Though, I decided to take English 1301 because I wanted to be able to write something that would make it easier for a reader to understand, and of course to make me get good grades in other classes assignments. Also, because I didn’t know the difference between writing a rhetorical analysis essay and writing a normal
During the fall semester I enrolled in an English 111 course to help improve my writing skills. Throughout the semester I was instructed to write four papers, not including this one. The topics for my essays were about; the value of education, victims and creators, a report essay, and last but not least a review essay. Each essay became more challenging than the previous one. As each essay came along, I applied the skills I learned in class and necessary peer evaluations to correct my mistakes so that I could get better at writing.
In the eight weeks of my English151B class, I have improved my writing skills to write a well-organized and focused essay by avoiding run-ons, fragments, using proper verb tenses, and punctuation marks.
Strong relationships are something I always have looked for in life. I find myself searching for people who share common interests, I enjoy spending time with, and most importantly have the same level of respect for others as I do. I have had a lot of experiences in my life that have shaped my ideas of respect for others and for myself. I always do my best to stay true to myself by doing things that I believe to be right and that I truly enjoy doing. I search for people with these same ideals.
Amy Tan, a child of Chinese immigrants, wrote the story “Two Kinds”, telling the tale of a Jing-Mei’s rebellion against her mother’s desire to change her into a prodigy. As Jing-Mei’s mother continually tells her she does not try hard enough to succeed, the conflict between Jing-Mei and her mother escalates. Jing-Mei grows more stubborn, making every effort to resist her mother, and the relationship devolves into a standoff where mother and daughter both refuse to budge from their position. “Two Kinds” shows the irony in Jing-Mei’s relationship with her mother; while her mother believes Jing-Mei does not try hard enough to succeed, Jing-Mei succeeds in her struggle for identity by refusing to become the person her mother wants.
I must admit, at the beginning, English course description was overwhelming and made me question my own capabilities. English is my second language and on top of that, I always had difficulty writing pretty much everything; essays, summaries. Last four months has been very busy. Under the knowledgeable and helpful eye of my professor, I have read and analyzed multiple articles on various
I get this semester will be a hard time for me because I’m taking 5 classes this semester. My English class is one of the most important subjects to pass in college. The objective of English 1020 is to write more than 5 paragraphs for this class and it is way different than English 1010. The grade I might make in English 1020 is a B and the problem is the small mistakes I make in the paper. I’m hoping to improve my writing skill, class participation, and listening skills.
When I moved to America writing became harder. My teachers could not understand most of the sentences I jotted down on my paper. I became overwhelmed. I refused to step an inch near that classroom because it made me feel unintelligent. Fortunately, on a rainy day I spent hours contemplating, and eventually I became filled with determination to succeed in my English class. To overcome my improper ways, I put in countless hours of extreme studying on websites that enhanced my spelling, Parts of Speech, and taught myself every tip and tricks in the English language. Soon, I began writing essays for fun. Now In my senior year, I’m very happy to announce that I am now studying hard and thriving in my AICE General Papers class, where I can happily write essays and learn more about the English
Prior to the start of the ENG-122 course, if a co-worker had read something that I had wrote and told me that they didn’t understand what I was trying to say, I would have thought that they were just giving me a hard time or just being picky. I would have said to myself, “I don’t have time for this” or, “what do they not understand?” I didn’t realize that I didn’t provide enough detailed information and that my writing was not clear. Whenever I write something, I can now see when my sentences don’t flow or if my paragraphs do not transition well. Sometimes I find myself moving sentences around so that it makes more sense.
Perhaps essay not going to be complete with dose stuff. Since 2010 my initially was to studies English. But always I had problem with writing. My habit was so good that time. If I learn something I would like to distribute with friends. Time passed quickly I graduated high school. Now I am currently attending college. Sometime college give us frustration and depression. Still we need to try our best to hit the top. Now I 'm not better at writing skill but I enjoy written all time. If you learn about MLA and APA. It won 't going to be hard at all. It not difficulty but it
I can easily read the words, I just have trouble comprehending what I have just read. This makes it a challenge to write about a subject that I am required to read in order to learn the subject matter. The next scenario that I do not particularly care for is the task of mixing my ideas with a required topic. I do this while putting together my Sunday School class, and it is sometimes a struggle. However, if I can stay focused at home with three kids, a wife, a dog and my list of chores all bidding for my time, I can get past these obstacles.
My experience with English has changed drastically from middle school to college. Being in middle school I have really had to do much of a big paper, but as I progressed through college I’ve realized there much more that has to be added. I had always wondered why middle school was so easy but as years went on, I realized that advancing to college there’s a lot more requirements and importance to writing. In middle school, I was young and just starting to really realize what an essay was and after high school I really understood what an essay consists of. No matter how
