Perseverance and motivation come hand in hand. The definition of perseverance is, “steady and continued action or belief, usually over a long period and especially despite difficulties or setbacks.” (Scuderi) The definition of motivation is along the same lines. Both are to keep another pushing for their goals or dreams. A common difficulty is how to overcome the negative pressure or sides and stay motivated. Motivation and perseverance is difficult to obtain and hold on to with negative outlooks from non-supportive people. Individuals need to have their own positive outlooks on their dreams and believe in themselves before they believe others thoughts on the goal. The cancer did not stop him. Sundquist had to take a long break from any activity for his cancer but in his older age with an amputated leg, he was motivated and continued to play soccer in any way or on any team possible. At one point, he played for a Paralympics travel soccer team to continue his love of soccer.
At one point of his life, he lost his love and motivation for the sport of soccer. On page 217, he received a brochure in the mail. He talks of the brochure in description saying, “…photo of a one-legged ski racer wearing a red, white, and blue race suit, snow shooting up behind his ski like water behind a motor boat.” (Sundquist, pg. 217) Suddenly after receiving the brochure, he calls Paul DiBello who is in charge at the National Sport Center for the Disabled.
While on the phone, Sundquist learns of what he needs to follow his dreams. Motivated he follows what Paul has told him and talks to his parents of what he would like to do next. His parents agree to his idea of going to this ski camp and soon enough he heads off to be on the Paralympics ski …show more content…

He learns of what he will be doing at the center and how he will be spending his time there. The issues of money and having to move to the center could interrupt his dream of joining the Paralympic ski team. Proving to Paul his motivation, he states, “Look, there are some things that are important,’ I say. ‘And then there are goals.” (Sundquist, pg. 236)
Sundquist’s motivation and perseverance continued as he tried to find a way to pay for this center and follow his new dream. Each idea created failed until he received a piece of paper in the mail. The piece of paper from a relief organization asked for donations. His new idea then created, to ask for donations from others. These donation slips sent out to people recommended by a friend who runs a charity and relatives or distant friends.
His dreams crushed when in a meeting with Paul talking of pushing his training back. He was motivated to train for 2006 Paralympics but wanted to push it all back to finish his education. Paul would not have him giving up, threatening to send back all the money he earned. Paul would have to send back all the money earned in 400 different ways and say that Sundquist has quit. After that meeting, Sundquist decided he would not quit because it would mean people seeing he was quitting his dream and
