For many of us, sports are a daily part of our lives. In fact, for most people who are now involved in coaching, it may be either their first or second priority. For anyone who has chosen to undertake the task of coaching sports, that coach must have a clear and defined coaching philosophy. As was mentioned in the text and assignments for this week, if one does not have his or her philosophy defined, it will make his or her job and goals of teaching and coaching that much more difficult to obtain.
Character development is a great philosophy to have, it is the one which I myself try to live and coach by, and one that personally, I feel should be adopted by more coaches. Far too often we see or hear of a coach, be it a youth coach or someone involved in professional sports, who fails to understand that while winning may be important, the number one goal should always be the well being and growth (both personally and professionally) of the members of the team. Perhaps the most recent example of this is the recent events which have and are still ongoing with the Miami Dolphins. There is currently an ongoing investigation as to whether or not bullying is being allowed or even encouraged in the locker room of the Dolphins.

While I have never personally had to deal with a situation as exaggerated as this one, I have seen firsthand how bullying can cause severe problems and rifts in a team. While coaching a group of ten year old boys in baseball, there were a few players who either through a lack of experience, or physical skills or a combination of these were not as good as the majority of the team. Of course, boys at that age will inevitably begin to recognize this and poke fun at the other
Describe P1 and Explain M1 four roles and four responsibilities of sports coaches, using examples of coaches from different sports.
Sports management is a really broad field, therefore I decided to focus on my minor and one of my major interests of this field: coaching. In this paper I will be explaining my personal five building blocks that make up a well-rounded coaching philosophy and coach. Those blocks are; leadership, organization, attitude, respect, and resiliency. Each of these five aspects are equally important and balance each other out. Leadership, the action of leading a group of athletes towards a goal. Organization, being able to organize a team and have a plan in order to help the team achieve goals. Attitude, it is very important for a coach to have a winning and positive attitude that is contagious to the players. Respect, there has to be a good
My topic is similar to yours. I have always been intrigued to examine the relationship between coach and athlete. In my experience, I have found coaches who provide positive support and are constructive with their criticism are more enjoyable to play for and give the athlete a more positive experience. Coaches that come across as condescending seem to push kids away from the game. It is important that the student-athlete has a positive experience, especially student-athletes at a young age. I feel if a student-athlete has a negative experience at the interscholastic level he or she will be less likely to stick with the sport.
It is my job as a coach to help develop athletes physically, psychologically, and socially while helping them have fun by playing a sport. I will do this by being enthusiastic and having a positive attitude in practice, games, and while not coaching. This cooperative approach to coaching will create a sense of community within the team I coach, and the athletes will feel more welcome to discuss their thoughts, ideas, questions, and concerns with me. Creating this setting and relationships with athletes will only benefit the team by creating a team culture necessary for the well-being and success of high school sports’ teams. Success in sports means accomplishing goals set by the team, not winning. Winning is important, but just striving to win is even more vital toward the success of teams. As a coach, I will also be a motivator for athletes. Athletes will see me come to practice with a positive attitude, displaying my passion. This is the beginning of how I will motivate athletes. Motivation starts with my attitude, and athletes pick up on this. In order to motivate and want to be motivated, there must be a reason, a why? I will use the teams’ goals they will set, in order to motivate them to give their best effort in order to achieve success by reaching their
However, when we talk about youth sports, our main concern is with providing players with a positive, character building experience. Winning is not the only acceptable outcome for youth players, and coaches need to understand this principle. “With a winning philosophy young athletes may lose out on opportunities to develop their skills, to enjoy participation, and to grow socially and emotionally. Well informed coaches realize that success is not equivalent to winning games, and failure is not the same as losing.” (Enhancing Coach-Parent Relationships in Youth Sports, 15)
A Coach is somebody who develops, improves or promotes changes in a persons ability and understanding. Coaches work with another person or a group of people and develops them as people using sport to progress them in their development. All coaches have certain responsibilities towards performers, their sport, their profession and themselves. Below I have identified what a coach may be required to fulfil.
Whenever I wish to learn an advanced skill I turn to my field hockey coach that have taught me everything that I know about the sport. However, they have not only taught me the sport, but also taught me how to be strong, and to trust. As I matured I struggled with believing in myself. It may have taken all four years of my high school career, but they finally got through to me. I know use what they have taught me everyday socially, academically, and athletically. Which in the end, all of they lessons and guidance paid off when I was named Division III player of the year. This was a dream I had since freshmen year and would not have come true without may amazing coaches.
My Coaching Philosophy I always emphasize three things to athletes. One, always put your family over everything you do in life. They are and will always be the most important and number one thing. Second is academics, getting an education is important. Not everyone in this world is able to receive a quality education so it should not be taken for granted.
Overcoming the fact that one day you will not be able to play your sport is one of the hardest things all athletes must one day go through. It is a fact of the game that one day your eligibility runs out or if you are one of the lucky few who play professionally, your body’s years of health do not last forever. Coaching just to be around the sport and spread the joy that sport gave you for so many years. My coaching philosophy relies extremely heavily on this information. I have always been a person who is passionate about the things I love because I do not believe in not putting your whole heart into something. The most critical component to success in whatever sport you love lies in honoring the game that so many before you loved and excelled at. Excelling and honoring the game means having respect for everyone involved with the sport. Giving respect to your coaches is something I learned from the beginning. Being respectful and having a positive attitude learned at a young age is something completely taken for granted until you have adults who can neither adapt nor be flexible when something does not go their way. Sport is a form of education in that it teaches you similar life lessons that will be useful for far longer than the amount of time that you spend actually playing it.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
In contemporary American sports, coaches can, at times, be extremely temperamental and my resort to bullying tactics to try to motivate their players to get them to perform at their highest possible level. This may take the form of face-to-face confrontation in which coaches challenge individual players in private, or it may take the form of publicly humiliating individual players or groups of players in front of the rest of the team to motivate certain players by exploiting their fear of criticism or the loss of respect from their teammates.
Coaching is not a new phenomenon. The modern concept is widely considered to originate from the sporting world where literature such as “The Inner Game of Tennis” and other “Inner Game” publications by Timothy Gallwey date back to as early as 1974. These books may be considered as some of the first to touch on the concept of coaching. As Sir John Whitmore states in his well renowned book, Coaching for Performance, “Gallwey had put his finger on the essence of coaching. Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance.” (Whitmore, 2009) It was in the first edition of this book, published 1992, that Whitmore comments on the relative immaturity of coaching in applications beyond the sporting world. Today we can see that
Their have been many developments in sport and coaching science (CS) over the last few years. Davies et al (1965) have suggested that the developmetns made are, in the field of sports science, mainly related to the changes in technologies. Smith and Wesson (2006) have indicated that, though changes in coaching science are not as easy to pinpoint the cause, changes in practice are most likely to be as a result of changes in the approach of many coaches to develop a more athlete centred approach. It has also been suggested that the development of media technologies has led to changes in practice. In this essay, I will identify the issues which have led to changes in these sciences, and weather they have been good or bad. I will then go on to
When I think of coaching I think of practice planning, game planning, scouting strategizing of offense and defense, choosing my starters, little things like that. All of those ideas are valid, but that’s not the whole picture. There is a lot more to coaching than planning for a practice or a game. Many times a person who would like to coach an interschool athletic team has little or no preparation to teach sports skills and techniques. The only qualifications is often the person’s participation on his or her high school, college, or university’s team, coach of a community youth team or even perhaps as a professional player. While all that experience is valuable in one way or another, it does not constitute an adequate preparation for
Sports coaches have to have a passion for that sport they’re coaching and the ability to communicate with everyone. It’s the coach's job to provide the training and exercises to help an athlete perform. Coaches’ work at all levels of sports and they work with lots of different people for example they may work at a middle school level, community level, or even the professional level in all different sports. To help athletes up their game, coaches have to build drills and conduct exercises. Using their knowledge in that sport, they can teach athletes to use the proper form and technique to help them perform better. Coaches’ also have to build a team’s strategy, to build a strategy coaches’ have to analyze their opponent and determine their weaknesses and their strong points before a match so the coach can critique his team and make them ready for that specific team, by calling specific plays and putting in specific players to make his team play their
