GMOs are genetically modified organisms. They are made by infusing viruses or altering the DNA of cells to produce an organism to the specified design. The process includes taking genes from one species and inserting them into another. GMOs can be made using four steps; using viruses/ bacteria to infect animal/ plant cell with new DNA, coating DNA into tiny metal pellets and firing the m into the cells, injecting the DNA into tiny fertilized eggs with a needle, and using electric shocks to create holes in the membrane and fill the holes with new DNA.
GMOs are increasing in production due to the economic benefits that it possess for producers, but there are no health benefits of GMOs for consumers. GMOs are known to be very toxic to the body, but are still edible. They contain negative genes such as antibiotic resistant genes and new combinations of proteins that occur in these genetically modified species. The effects of consuming these negative genes and new combination of proteins are still unknown and pose very serious health risk uncertainty. The GMOs that are being produced may even be in our foods and we may not even know since the foods that are GMOs are widely common that we eat them every day. The current GMO foods that are circulating the world today are canola, soy, sugar beets, corn, Hawaiian papaya, zucchini and yellow squash.

They say that the GMO process causes diseases such as cancer or diabetes, and some also say that GM foods can cause allergic reactions. Society has no idea about the agricultural products that are broken down into high and monitored risks with GMO’s that is in the food eaten everyday. Those in fact that are high risk of being GMO are in commercial production which the ingredients are derived from being tested every time prior to use in what is known as the Non-GMO project products. The Non-GMO project standard most people would have no idea about actually lists these high risks that are from GMO microorganisms, crops , animal and bee products to feed these certain crops. Some examples of these high risks crops that could be GMO are Alfalfa, Canola, Corn, Cotton, Papaya, Soy, Sugar Beets, Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash. GMOs foods have lots of unknown factors coming into play. There are many questions to whether they are safe for us and the crops. GMOs foods have been connected to sterile and dead livestock, and damage to almost every organ studied in lab animals. Labeling might also be costing us more than necessary. Some say we should stop using GMOs altogether, but right now it’s difficult to see what choice has our best interests at heart.
According to a survey done in 2015, “Nearly 9 out of 10 scientists from the American Association for the Advancement of Science say GMOs are "generally safe" to eat. Though if you're like more than half of U.S. adults from the general public in that same survey, you think you probably shouldn't eat them” (Siegel and Verity). There are many reasons people believe they should not be consuming GMO’s from them, having too many chemicals used on them when they are grown, to them not being “organic” and genetically altered, or not being as healthy as non-genetically modified organisms. But those beliefs are not true. GMO’s are still the same plant but with one or two added or deleted genes to make them fit the profile scientists are looking for. According to the World Health Organization in 2005, “GM foods currently traded on the international market have passed risk assessments in several countries and are not likely to present risks for human health” (Novella). Many of those who are anti-GMO claim that GMOs are not safe because they do not know enough about them or they have heard far too many conflicting reports. While there are many reports that claim that GMOs are detrimental to the environment, the three agencies that oversee GM crops, the FDA, USDA, and EDA, have ruled that these crops do not pose any real threat. Since the beginning of the GM crop in 1996, there have been 2,497 approvals of the safety of GMOs in the environment and 1,129 of these approvals have been for the food safety of the products (Monsanto). This further disproves the claim that GMOs are unsafe for humans and the environment and reassures that there is no risk involved in either the consumption or the planting of GM

A GMO is a genetically modified organism. GMOs are living organisms that have been changed and modified in laboratories through genetic engineering. Over the years, scientists, researchers, breeders, and farmers have been working to change and modify plants to better fit human needs. 10,000 years ago, humans began crop domestication using selective breeding and in the 1700s, scientists and farmers began cross-breeding plants within a species. Though the 1940s and 1950s, researchers looked for other ways to introduce genetic variation into the gene pool of plants. In the 1980s researchers created a more controllable way to create plants with more desirable traits resulting in the first GMOs being introduced to the market place in the 1990s.
A GMO is a genetically modified organism. It is a process of taking “genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to obtain a desired trait or characteristic, and this is why they are also called transgenic organism” (About GMO). This process is categorized under two names even though they are one in the same, Genetic Engineering and Genetic Modification.
