Sue Monk Kidd’s novel The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of a 14-year-old white girl, Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of her mother's death. Lily meets new people and they help her realize who she is and how the world is around her. Throughout the novel Kidd uses Lily’s various situations to express the theme. Kidd uses imagery, symbolism and similes to express the overall theme which is forgiveness and love. A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. In the novel Kidd used a simile to compare and make readers understand more. “ I was the only one who knew that despite her sharp ways, her heart was more tender than a flower skin and she loved me beyond reason”.(11) Kidd compared Rosaleen to a flower to express that at times …show more content…

August Boatwright and her sisters June and May Boatwright are women Lily meet on her way to finding more about her mother. August lives in Tiburon where she makes a living beekeeping and selling honey-based products with her sisters. She also has a passion for beekeeping. Kidd used imagery in a quote “Place a beehive on my grave and let the honey soak through”. (137) this for readers created a visual in there minds and also lets readers know that August loves her bees and that she would be fine dying with only them. Another example of where Kidd uses imagery in the book is when she uses a quote “Don’t be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you. Still, dont be an idiot; wear long sleeves and long pants” (92). Kidd uses this quote to make a visual image in your mind of a bee stinging you, she used this quote to express imagery and to show that no matter what color you are a bee will sting you.
