Bad Choices Lead you no where. This Story of a reckless leader was told long ago never written until now, Odysseus’ journey was spoken by a blind poet named Homer. The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a bad leader for many reasons. The first reason is Odysseus pride proves he does not put his men first.
The second reason that proves he is a bad leader is that his men didn't listen to him on there way back to Ithaca. The third is He makes bad choices and it leads into not getting his men home.
First of all, a leader must be willing to put all his men first Odysseus proves he lets his pride endanger his men many times in The Odyssey. One example of Odysseus being prideful when he wants a song to be about him at dinner with Alcinous.. The text states that “In effect, Odysseus is asking for a song about himself”(756) This shows he doesn't want his men to be in that song with himself. Odysseus also shows that he is overly prideful when he declares “Men hold me Formidable for quile in peace and war.”(756)This shows he not a humble leader

The text proves odysseus men don't listen to him . One example of his men don't listen to him is when he tells them to go do something. The text states “I told them back and quickly out to sea again my men was mutinous.”(757) In order to be a good leader, he needs his men to respect him and do whatever he as.
Odysseus also shows When he told his men not to touch the cattle or anything, that it will not be a good outcome. His men don't listen to him and goes ahead. As the Result of killing the Cattle the text states “They are punished with death a thunderbolt from Zeus destroys their boat and all the men drowned.”(770) It was Odysseus fault for making the stop, he was told before not to even go on the island just to keep going. His men didn't listen to him thats why it pulled him Calypso
In the book “The Odyssey” there were many situations where Odysseus might not have been the strongest leader. I think that he was a strong leader overall in many different circumstances. Towards the beginning of the book when he gets to the first island where they stopped for food and supplies. I think he was a good leader cause he went with them but when they had troubles with the others it wasn't his fault that he lost some of his men. He could not control what happened at that island. Towards the middle of the book when he goes to the underworld to find Teiresias. He goes by himself with none of his men all alone. I think that when he did this it made himself look very tough and strong. Towards the end where he goes by Charybdis and scylla
In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a bad example of a leader. First, Odysseus is not disciplined enough to discipline his crew even if not punishing them will cause them to ignore his orders again. For example, in the Epic of Aeolus, Odysseus asks Aeolus to put all the storms into a bag, “...curious and suspicious the sailors open the bag, thinking it contains treasure… hurricanes blow the ships back to Aeolus.”[Page 673; Line 535] This quote shows his crew not adhering to Odysseus’s orders to not open the bag. After, this happens he does not punish them instead he moves on. This shows him not wanting to control his crew instead let them do what they want. Doing so causes them to be more mutinous and ignorant towards Odysseus in the future. Odysseus does not show good leadership qualities because he himself if not strong enough to get on to his crewmates and tell them what's what.
Although Odysseus is the captain of his men on the ship, he is a bad leader in the story. “ ‘I say, Cyclops! He didn’t turn out to be such a milksop after all, did he, when you murdered his friends and gobbled them up in your cave? Your sins were sure to find you out, you cruel brute!” (117) Odysseus is very boastful when he has victory over his opponents. He outsmarts Polyphemus, and then mocks him after escaping the cave. This shows that Odysseus is not setting a good example for his crew of men. “ But I was determined not to listen, and shouted again in my fury: ‘I say Cyclops! if ever any one asks
In book nine, the episode of the Kikones, after they storm the place he's trying to get them back to protection. “but on the spot I told them: Back! And Quickly! Out to sea again” (146). He wants to keep them safe, he doesn’t want them to die. They depend on each other. He thinks of his crew as family and he wants to protect them danger. Some may argue that Odysseus just wants to save himself from harm, but he actually really cares for his men and it is his duty to bring them back home to their
He is not a good leader because he does not know what to do in a crisis, and he does not know how to control is men. Odysseus does not know what to do in a crisis: “I'd never spare you in fear of Zeus hatred, you or your comrades here, unless I had and urge” (Homer 9.312-313). Odysseus is not a good leader because he does not know what to do in a crisis, as shown, he always relies on the gods to save him. He expected the cyclops to spare him because the gods. He does not know what to do without the gods, and by himself he could not get out of a bad situation. The gods are the ones that are good in a crisis because they are the ones that save him. Odysseus can not control his men because they do not trust him: “Now this Aeolus loads him down with treasure. Favoritism, friend to friend! Hurry, let’s see what loot is in the sack, how much gold and silver. Break it open now!” (Homer 10.50-54). Odysseus men do not trust him enough, because they thought that he had treasures and he was not sharing it with them. So when they were looking for treasures they found a sack and opened it. It turns out that it was a sack of wind, and it sent them back to the island of Aeolia. If Odysseus was able to control his men, then they would not have opened the bag of wind. Another quote that also proves this point is when his men killed the cattle of the sun god: “Listen to me, my comrades, brothers in hardship. All ways dying are hateful to us poor
Throughout the epic The Odyssey, Homer narrates the trying journey of Odysseus and his men as they try to go back to Ithaca after the Trojan War has ended. Through the narrative the reader sees many examples of Odysseus’s true nature as leader, and, like any mortal man, he has his strengths and weaknesses. Although Odysseus occasionally shows signs of poor leadership, such as arrogance and the tendency to miscommunication, he also exhibits redeeming qualities like confidence and dedication.
Question 1) I believe that Odysseus was a bad leader, because multiple times in the story, he puts him and his followers in bad situations. In book IV of The Odyssey, Odysseus’s curiosity takes him and his crew to Polyphemus’ cave where they end up getting trapped. This shows that Odysseus does not have much common sense, as he put him and his crew right in the palm of Polyphemus’ hand without even realizing it. Also, according to Homer in book X, Odysseus gets him and his followers in lots of trouble with Circe. While Odysseus is not so unwillingly being held captive by Circe, she changes his men into pigs. This also proves that he is not a good leader because he was only thinking of himself. Lastly, in book XII, Odysseus keeps a secret from his crew for his own benefit. Odysseus is well aware that his men will all end up dieing before they can make it home, but he chooses to not tell them. This again proves that Odysseus is a bad leader because he is being selfish. That is why Odysseus is a bad leader.
Is Odysseus a good leader? One of the first epics and a great all around story, The Odyssey is something near and dear to people's hearts. Fans of movies, books, or poems sometimes overlook character flaws when reading or telling the story. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey Odysseus, a greek king goes from being a war hero to an almost forgotten castaway. I will prove that Odysseus is not a great leader through three reasons.
Odysseus cannot be called a leader when his men do not see him as one. Odysseus could not control his men from the cattle, and they die as a result (The Castle of the Sun God. 923). Odysseus’ men losing faith in their leader establishes that Odysseus’ cannot be trusted because his actions were deemed reprehensible to the
There are a lot of reasons why Odysseus is a bad and good leader. Odysseus is a human and humans make mistakes, but don't you think Odysseus as a leader would think long and hard about decisions to make most of them good? The reasons Odysseus is a bad leader is because in the cyclops’ cave his men wanted to leave after they got the food and supplies, but Odysseus said, after one of his men suggested the idea, “Ah, how sound that was! Yet I refused, I wished to see the cave man, what he had to offer- no pretty sight, it turned out, for my friends.”
After reading The Odyssey, I realized Odysseus and I both share a strong leadership trait. There are many different occasions throughout the epic that Odysseus shows true leadership. One of the most memorable moments of leadership, happened to be on their trip to the land of the cyclopes. Odysseus and his men had been sailing, looking for home, when they came to some new land. As they came ashore, Odysseus turned to his men and proclaimed, “Old shipmates, friends, the rest of you stand by; I’ll make the crossing in my own ship, with my own company, and find out what the mainland natives are!” (898) Odysseus was being a true leader by showing his men that he is willing to keep them safe at all costs. A second example of Odysseus showing leadership occurred when he arrived back to Ithaca.
Odysseus once again does not tell his men, causing them to be selfish and hungry, killing the cattle. Zeus in return kills the rest of Odysseus’ men, leaving him alone. Odysseus then makes it to Calypso’s island, where he once again cheats on his wife, and then leaves years later to return to Ithaca after the gods interfere. The decisions summarized can help show us the conflicted parts of Odysseus, and have us question whether or not he truly was a good leader. The answer to that question is completely subjective, but his leadership was primarily good based on evidence from before.
Although Odysseus shows many strong leadership skills, he has some fatal flaws that prove to be critical when deciding if he is a good leader or not. After taking all of his past experiences in such as; endangering his men through by giving in to seduction or forgetting his goal of getting home, I’ve arrived at one conclusion, Odysseus is a weak leader. When Odysseus
Odysseus was a dreadful leader by the reason of, Odysseus did not make intelligent decisions. Odysseus’ men told Odysseus to leave the land of cyclops, but Odysseus did not want to listen and said “No, I want to see a cyclops in person”. Odysseus and his men ended up getting stuck with a cyclops in a cave which they had a hard time getting out of. For example, “My men came pressing round me breading, why not take the cheeses, get them stowed, comeback, and make a run for it?”. Odysseus makes this really great decision and says “I refused and I wish to see the cave man, and see what he has to offer”. Another piece of evidence that can be provided to prove that Odysseus is a bad leader, after Odysseus got the Cyclops mad,
The Odyssey by Homer is a epic poem that lectures us about Odysseus the main character and his life story of him being on an adventure for 20 years. Odysseus had many ups and downs in his journeys and he shows of how narcissistic he is about himself. As a result of Odysseus’s prideful essteam, being gone for so long and not caring about loved ones, and not informing his men about the risks they are going to take we can conclude that Odysseus is a horrid leader towards his men during his 20 year journey. A leader is someone who leads or commands a group, organization, or country, as the google dictionary says. Odysseus is a careless leader in behalf of his temptations, and himself not defending against his allurements.
