A Bad Leader in the Odyssey In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a bad example of a leader. First, Odysseus is not disciplined enough to discipline his crew even if not punishing them will cause them to ignore his orders again. For example, in the Epic of Aeolus, Odysseus asks Aeolus to put all the storms into a bag, “...curious and suspicious the sailors open the bag, thinking it contains treasure… hurricanes blow the ships back to Aeolus.”[Page 673; Line 535] This quote shows his crew not adhering to Odysseus’s orders to not open the bag. After, this happens he does not punish them instead he moves on. This shows him not wanting to control his crew instead let them do what they want. Doing so causes them to be more mutinous and ignorant towards Odysseus in the future. Odysseus does not show good leadership qualities because he himself if not strong enough to get on to his crewmates and tell them what's what. …show more content…
Odysseus will endanger his crew to brag to the enemy when he thinks the battle is over, but it truly is not, “...tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home on Ithaca!”[Page 669; Line 503-505] After Odysseus, escapes the Cyclops’ home he tells this son of a gods his name and his homeland. This leads to him getting cursed, “...grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, never see his home again.”[Page 670; Line 528-530] This shows how Odysseus got cocky and got cursed for it, basically sealing the fate of his crew to perish on their journey home. Odysseus doesn’t care if he’s actions affect his crew, he would rather jeopardize his journey to only get cursed by the person he bragged to. He is the opposite of a good leader instead of leaving with the victory he lost due to how arrogant he
Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. one example was when Odyssey use his mind to get his men’s out of hades. one example was when he help his mans get to safety. he was an Effective leaders and in this part of the story,Odysseus men were scared of of the Hades, and they did not think Odysseus would make it back,so he told them not to worry, i will make it back and he tells them to leave if he doesn’t make it back to the ship. another example was when Odysseus and his men were stock in cave with the one eye monster.
Throughout the course of the Odyssey, Odysseus and his men find themselves facing the most difficult of challenges. Odysseus will be classified as a bad leader or not based on how he acted during these challenges. Once inspecting Odysseus' decisions and thought process throughout his journeys, he is an overall bad leader. Some of his bad leadership moments are when Odysseus refuses to leave the cave of the cyclops, not communicating with his men about the contents of the bag from Aeolus, and not warning his men about the danger of eating Helios' cattle. All of these situations resulted in the death of many soldiers and could have been prevented by Odysseus.
Odysseus frequently displays hubris as a result of his tremendous courage and justifiable pride throughout books 9-12 of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, although this flaw reveals that even heroes can have imperfections. For instance, concealing his identity is key to Odysseus defeating the Cyclops, however his arrogance leads him to reveal himself as a “raider of cities” (9.561), demonstrating his desire to be recognized for his destructive power. Furthermore, even though he only flatters himself, Odysseus successfully motivates his men in the face of yet another threat, by boasting that his “tactics saved [them] all” (12.230), as if his actions alone rescued the rest of his crewmates. Odysseus’ crew admires him for his fearlessness, and they
The Negligent Son of Laertes Throughout Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus’s leadership proves to be very underdeveloped and used inconsiderately, allowing his crew to constantly get him into tough predicaments; furthermore, proving that he is the reason for his crew invariably making mistakes. In book 10, Odysseus and his men arrive to the Aeolian Island where he is then bestowed with food and drinks for the crew. Subsequently, Odysseus receives a bag of winds from the king of the island.
Camila Ventura Ms. Quijano-Diaz English 1 Honor 11 March 2024 Is Odysseus a Good Leader? Over the course of Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey," Odysseus has shown himself to be a capable leader on numerous occasions and a less than ideal one on others. Many now question if Odysseus is indeed a capable leader in light of this. Odysseus is portrayed as a complex character who displays bravery and wisdom. His astute tactics, fearlessness in the face of difficulty, and inventiveness in conquering obstacles frequently portray him as a perceptive leader.
In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates three important traits of leadership; creativity, courage, and intelligence. For example, Odysseus displayed creativity in “The Cyclops”. Odysseus used his creativity to save his men from Polyphemus, a terrible cyclops, by coming up with the idea to blind Polyphemus with a stake, to escape his cave. Without careful planning and creative thinking, Odysseus would not have been able to lead his men to safety and they all would have died as prisoners of Polyphemus. Additionally, Odysseus displayed his courage in “The Land of the Dead”.
The Odyssey originally written by Homer, then rewritten by Geraldine McCaughrean is an epic where the main character Odysseus is coming home from the treachery of war and struggles to get to his homeland Ithaca. On this journey, Odysseus shows terrible leadership as he shows arrogance and egotistical behavior throughout the book. A good leader will be confident as to be aspiring, but a weak leader is arrogant. He also shows disrespect, untruthfulness, and deceptiveness to his crew as they journey across the vast ocean. Not now and not in ancient times would they call Odysseus a leader but maybe hero as his actions are worthy of tales.
Odysseus Can be a good leader because he gets his crew out of some bad situations, To start off Odysseus got his crew out of the cyclops’s cave. “So, we seized our stake with its fiery tip and bored it round and round in the giant's eye” (9.435). This quote shows how Odysseus use a stick (more like a pole) and stuck it in the fire and when the cyclops fell asleep Odysseus took the stick and jabbed it into the giant's eye and escaped with most of his crew. Another way that Odysseus can be a good leader is that he got his crew out of Circe’s palace, even after she turned all of the crew into pigs. “Flinging open the pens, drove forth my men, who looked like full-grown swine” (10.429). This quote is showing that Circe is letting Odysseus’s crew out of the pen and releasing them, but in exchange Odysseus would have to sleep with Circe and stay
Another example of Odysseus’s arrogance is explicit after he won the battle of Troy. He decided to yell out to the gods that he doesn’t need them, and he does not give a sacrifice to them for leading the Greeks to victory. It is clear that Odysseus believes that he’s so strong and powerful, he doesn’t need the gods’ assistance. In return, the gods created a difficult journey back home for Odysseus and his men, which brought them many hardships. Unlike a hero, Odysseus was too absorbed in his own accomplishments that he did not acknowledge the others who have helped him along his difficult journey. A hero would have acknowledged the other people who have been an aid to him or her, and respect them, not disregard them. Odysseus’s arrogance is also seen when he is on Cyclops’ island. Odysseus discovers a cave and insists on waiting in the cave for whoever lives in it hoping for some type of guest-gift: “We lit a fire, burnt an offering, and took some cheese to eat;than sat in silence around the embers,
In Homer’s “The Odyssey,” there is a clear display of Odysseus’ leadership skills. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, spent many years stuck out at sea along with his crew members. During that time, Odysseus was the leader of the ship, and he made many decisions that put his position as leader in doubt. He would make important decisions when he was not in the right state of mind, refuse to listen to the advice of others, and put too much faith in his men. Furthermore, when he did these things, it would cause harm not only to their journey back home, but to their lives as well.
This Story of a reckless leader was told long ago never written until now, Odysseus’ journey was spoken by a blind poet named Homer. The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a bad leader for many reasons. The first reason is Odysseus pride proves he does not put his men first.
Odysseus angirly exclaims at the cyclops,” Zeus will avenge the unoffending guest”( The Cyclops 260-261). Odysseus gets full of courage and pride when calling out that he could have Zeus come after him not even thinking of the destruction that could come from saying that to the wrong person. Odysseus second detriment from anger is shown when he attacks the Cyclops when he did not have to stop and get stuck in the Cyclops cave. In the story leading up to The Cyclops episode people know that Odysseus and Poseidon do not get along so his anger was taken out on the Cyclops. Odysseus tells the Cyclops,” Poseidon Lord, who sets the earth atremble, broke it up on the rocks at your land’s end.”(273-274). If Poseidon did in fact crash his ship then there has to be a dislike between the to leading the readers to believe he is going to harm the Cyclops out of anger. Odysseus third and final detriment through evil thoughts in the episode “The Cyclops” is shown through his boastful attitude when he puts his crew at risk. Odysseus tries to exclaim again across the ocean,“Now when i cupped my hands I heard the crew in low voices protesting.”(492-493). Odysseus is being very boastful wanting the Cyclops to know who he was and how he was better not even considering the fact that he could get his whole crew
Odysseus is the main character in the Odyssey who exhibits good leadership in a variety of ways throughout the entire story. Throughout the Odyssey, the main character is Odysseus, who embarks on a 20-year journey. However, during that time, Odysseus's leadership changes a great deal from very good to very bad, quite quickly. It is important to take the circumstances into consideration in order to fully appreciate Odysseus's leadership traits and be able to know that he is truly a great leader.
“The art of leadership is saying no, and not saying yes”(Tony Blair). In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the captain of a large fleet trying to get back to their home, Ithaca. Odysseus, with his crew, had to go through many obstacles to return to Ithaca. Odysseus was a bad leader because he was selfish, arrogant, and couldn’t control his men.
In book eight Odysseus says, “‘All others I declare I far surpass, all that are living now and eating bread on earth’” (Homer 93). From this, the reader can infer through Odysseus’ actions that he is very confident and full of himself as he declares he is better than all others. Furthermore, this behavior can be a major deterrent to anyone working with him, such as his crew, and could cause major problems later in the story. Early into Odysseus’ perspective entering the story, he has already proven to have a lousy attitude, and the reader can infer that his arrogance will show up more as the story
