“Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status”(UDHR). A declaration issued on December 10, 1948 by the United nations national assembly “an expression of the fundamental values which are shared by all members of the international community”( ).Although this may be true the reality that individuals misuse the power they have or are given is very common in our current society. When thinking of the abuse of power we think of someone who abuses their position to get information or to take advantage of a situation, and or to hold the power they have over another person. The misuse of power is a common occurrence in society, which requires victims to overcome it by stepping up or coming together as one to take back the rights we are all given as human beings. …show more content…

We often see this during a war when someone of a higher states misuses their position. While looking at the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque, The misuse of power is seen when the main character Paul is home on leave, and gets in trouble for not saluting a superior officer. During this scene in the book Paul is told “‘You think you can bring your front line manners here, what? Well, we don't stand for that sort of thing’”(73). Although this was Paul’s superior officer this discourteous act towards a man who was putting his life on the line everyday for his country is just preposterous. Should someone who drinks coffee and has breakfast every morning, living life to the fullest really have more power over the man who is out on the front lines without food for days on end risking his life? Surely one can look and see that when an individual uses their position like this it’s abuse of one’s own
