During the afternoon of yesterday, a fight arose in the time square of Verona. Tybalt unintentionally slays Mercutio, this enrages Romeo causing him to chase after the fleeing Tybalt. A few moments afterwards, Romeo intentionally stabs Tybalt killing him. Romeo knowing the punishments retreat to Friar Laurence’s cell whilst Benvolio explained the whole situation to prince Escalus and the two houses.
During this hot afternoon, Benvolio suggests to Mercutio that they should go indoors explaining that a brawl with be unavoidable if they encounter Capulet’s men. Mercutio neglects this suggestion and they both are encountered by Tybalt and his group of men. Mercutio is annoyed by Tybalt and starts to taunt him. Romeo enters, Tybalt's attention
When Romeo shows up, Romeo tries to keep the peace but Tybalt says, "Boy, your words can't excuse the harm you've done to me, so now turn and draw your sword". Mercutio, however, stands up for Romeo and fights Tybalt. They "fight", but eventually, Tybalt accidentally kills Mercutio, then flees. His rage and desire for Romeo caused the death of another person. He keeps seeking fights out of his anger.
Mercutio has enough of Tybalt’s insults to his friend and takes matters into his own hands. Big mistake. Romeo stands between the two men and ends up getting Mercutio stabbed. Tybalt and Mercutio are literal and metaphorical
Since Mercutio was Romeo’s beloved friend, Romeo felt that he needed vengeance for Mercutio, which pushed him to fight and made him relentless in defeating Tybalt. Romeo said, “Alive in triumph—and Mercutio slain! Away to heaven, respective lenity, and fire-eyed fury be my conduct now. Now, Tybalt ... Either thou or I, or both, must go with him” (3.1.84-91).
“And but one word with one of us? couple it with something, make it a word and a blow.” [III, i, 37-38] Tybalt was not willing to fight mercutio if mercutio had not escalated tybalt's anger. Moreover, Mercutio could have avoided this situation if he had showed respect in return. This comes to show how mercutio had made impulsive decisions instead of making rational decisions. As a result, we can see Mercutio's death occurs due to his rash and impulsive decisions. Mercutio’s impulsive acts result in his own passing. When Romeo refuses to participate in a duel with Tybalt, Mercutio challenges Tybalt himself. Using words which are highly intimidating and threatening, Mercutio gives Tybalt no choice but to engage in a duel. The following violent words are exchanged between the two characters.
(Draws his sword) Tybalt, you rat catcher, will you walk?” (3.1.45) Here Mercutio shows bravery when he takes the challenge of fighting Tybalt away from Romeo even though Mercutio knows that he could die while he is fighting. There is an endless dispute between the Montague’s and the Capulet Families.
Hurry up, or I’ll smack you on the ears with my sword before you have yours drawn”(3.1.75-78). Mercutio tricks Tybalt by taunting him into a duel to shield Romeo and combat Mercutio in Romeo's place instead. Since Tybalt’s main point in the interaction was to drag Romeo into a duel and remains to despise Romeo for being a Montague, Taking this into consideration, Mercutio put too much trust in his self-confidence to protect Romeo from Tybalt, which soon turned out to be a duel that shouldn’t have occurred from Romeo’s point of view between Tybalt and
Romeo arrives and acts impulsively when he tries to stop them and gets in the way of Mercutio defending himself from Tybalt. Mercutio says to Romeo, “Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm.” This results in Mercutio’s death, and Romeo’s fury towards Tybalt because of it. When Romeo next see’s Tybalt he says that
Tybalt intended to fight Romeo because he disliked his presence at the Capulet’s party but after Romeo refuses to fight Mercutio feels the need to fight for him instead. This is not the only time Mercutio is a display of masculinity in the play. As Romeo’s friend he likes to mock him, calling him an petrarchan lover and joking about his version of love. The difference to Romeo is also found when juxtaposing how Romeo and Mercutio speak. For instance, when Romeo talks about the girls he is in love with or has a crush on he talks in poetic sentences. In comparision, Mercutios:” Laura was a kitchen slave. Surely she has a better love to make rhymes for her. Dido was shabbily dressed. Cleopatra was a gypsy girl. Helen and Hero were sluts and harlots.
Mercutio is also a very loyal friend/companion to Romeo. After Tybalt confronted Romeo on the beach Mercutio got in Tybalt’s
Mercutio and Tybalt are about to fight when Romeo
. Firstly, Tybalt is to blame for Mercutio’s death as he actually gave him the wound that killed him. Also, Tybalt provokes Mercutio by insulting Romeo, ‘Thou art a villain.’ This is one of the biggest insults that Tybalt can give and would usually be followed by a duel. However, Romeo calmly replies by saying ‘Villain I am none / Therefore farewell. I see thou know’st me not.’ Because Romeo is not defending his honour, Mercutio is provoked by Tybalt’s insults and starts insulting Tybalt himself. This is what leads to the two of them fighting and Mercutio getting his fatal wound. So, if Tybalt didn’t insult Romeo or fight Mercutio, Mercutio wouldn’t have been killed.
However Romeo does not want to die or kill Tybalt so he says “And so, good capsulet which name I tender dearly as my own”, meaning he does not want to fight a capsule because he's married to one and he loves him. However, Tybalt thinks he is being sarcastic so this only makes him more mad. By Romeo saying that he's saying he is not gonna fight him, so Mercutio takes his place so he is not disowned. Mercutio says, “good king of cats, nothing but one of your nine lives” meaning that Mercutio will fight for Romeo and kill Tybalt, Tybalt then says “I am for you” therefore saying he is all his making them draw their swords and fight however as they are fighting Romeo steps in between them with his arms out to make them stop fighting but as he is begging them to stop fighting Tybalt swings under Romeos arms striking Mercutio in the body.
This causes tension as Tybalt and Mercutio become even more frustrated with Romeo. Mercutio draws his sword in order to defend Romeos reputation. He says “Tybalt, you rat-catcher, will you walk?” challenging him to a duel. A feeling of foreboding hangs in the air.
In contrast, Mercutio attempts to stop Tybalt’s thirst for vengeance when he tries to duel Romeo but ultimately gets killed in the process of trying to save his good friend from being killed by Tybalt which causes Romeo to take vengeance upon Tybalt by killing him.
Mercutio, despite the circumstances displays his lighthearted nature. The actor should speak in a mocking voice, tauntingly circling Tybalt who should react with restrained anger, clenched fists and a hand on his sword. Mercutcio continues this, ignoring benvolios vain attempts at keeping the peace, until Romeo enters from the corner of the stage. With his entrance Tybalt finally breaks out of Mercutcios circle to face Romeo. He should say the line "here
