At this point in the novel, we have heard George mention twice that his life would be improved without Lennie. However, George still seems to feel a need to look out for Lennie. That said, he protects Lennie from conflict by explaining to everyone they meet that he is just a “big kid”.
Think about the irony behind this situation. We have discussed the theme of “isolation” and how it relates to each of the characters. Think about the way George treated Lennie when they were kids. Explain how George’s internal conflict about Lennie contributes to his own isolation. Also, include other ways in which George is isolated in the text. Your paper should adhere to MLA formatting and be thoughtful enough to require at least 1.5 pages.
Isolated; having minimal contact or little in common with others. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, One of the protagonists, George, is isolated from his surrounding peers. This is because of George’s internal conflict about Lennie, another protagonist. He is also insecure of his surroundings. I believe that George’s Internal Conflict with Lennie is driven by guilt, which leads to him being isolated from the other ranch-hands.
Lennie is described as a big bulky animal. But his brain, on the other hand, is slow as child’s. Because of this fact, when George was younger, he picked on Lennie and bullied him. In the book it states, “George’s voice was taking on the
George told Lennie numerous times how much better his life would be without Lennie. One of these times George had said, “God a’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy, I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble” (Steinbeck 11). This shows one of the many instances where George says he just wanted to be able to have a normal life, have a job and settle down. George was never able to have this normal life while with Lennie because of the fact Lennie messed up many of their jobs causing them to have to move and find new jobs. As one can see, Lennie was holding back George from the start, but never knew
George says he wants Lennie to stay with him because george is trying to keep lennie from getting hurt or even killed. “Lennie never done it in meanness,” he said. “All the time he done bad things but he never done any of ‘em mean - (95). This quote shows George sticking up for lennie because lennie did something he wasn't supposed to. George is always looking out for lennie as if he were his little brother.
If Lennie wasn’t around, George would have had an easier time when not trying to constantly take care of Lennie. Trying to get him out of trouble and making sure he survives and earns
In many ways Lennie is just like a little kid and we all know that little kids are not ready to be on their own. Even early in the story George is acting like a parent to Lennie.
George has always watched Lennie and took care of him. It was promise George made to Lennie’s Aunt Clara. But after a lot of traveling due to Lennie’s behavior, George was getting tired. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George, a migrant farm worker, kills his best friends Lennie, a child-like man who most likely has a mental disability [I don’t like Lennie’s description]. It might seem preposterous to kill your own best friends, like George did, but he did the right thing.
George had thought about life without Lennie before and he even has mentioned it to Lennie. He implies that Lennie is a type of burden in his life and it would be much easier without Lennie. George didn’t have to take care of Lennie but now that he did he can’t just leave Lennie behind. Lennie needs the
4. George is describing to Slim the predominantly negative effects he’s observed of being a “lone wolf” in this field of work. He explains how keeping Lennie around saves him from getting angry and fighting and shutting everyone out. The two have bonded together and both rely on the other’s companionship as well as the hope of a brighter future where they own a stake of land together.
George took Lennie in after Lennie’s aunt died. George knew his aunt pretty well. Lennie had nowhere to go afterwards, so George let Lennie come along with him. George wasn’t always nice to Lennie in the beginning. George would tease him and trick him. Lennie didn’t know any better than to listen to George, even if it was a taunt. After an incident happened to Lennie, George stopped tormenting him. He felt bad for Lennie and how he treated him. From this moment on, George actually took into consideration of Lennie’s mindset. In the book, Steinbeck writes,
George takes care of Lennie many ways. George has taken care of Lennie for a long time. George took him under his wing even though he didn’t need to. George genuinely cares for Lennie. He feeds him, makes sure he is safe, also he gives him hope. George is constantly watching Lennie. George is a good friend to Lennie; however, George gets annoyed with Lennie very easily. He does this to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble or lost. He never leaves him by himself. This is shown when Lennie offers to leave, but George tells him “I want you to stay with me Lennie”(Steinbeck 104). George really cares for Lennie.
The word isolation is a term that is used to describe someone as being confined without much, or any contact. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the two characters, Crooks and Curley's wife had isolation forced on them throughout the entire course of the novel. The character Crooks was an old black man, during 1937, who lived in a little hut next the pile that was kept for the manure. He lives there by himself away from everyone else, and has no contact other than when he is given orders about work. Curley’s wife has been isolated because she is not trusted by her own husband and everyone considers her to be too flirty and a tart. These two characters both deal with isolation because they both don’t matter to anyone and are
Differences perceived or really have the power to alter a person's life and perception of the world. Throughout the novel “ of mice and men” by John Steinbeck, Characters are seen as different in any way live a life of isolation on the ranch. The types of isolation I have noticed throughout reading this book is Isolation of loneliness Curley's wife which is seen by her being victimized, sad, and misunderstood. Another type of Isolation is the isolation of race Crook which is seen from forcibly, isolated, bitter, and caustic. The last type of isolation I notice is the Isolation of age Candy I saw this through foreseeable, going to be isolated, worried, and sad.
Isolation is when a person is separated from others according to Merriam-Webster. In “Of Mice and Men” there are multiple characters that are isolated. Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s wife are some of the isolated characters in the book. Curley's wife is the most isolated character because if she hadn’t married Curley she wouldn’t be the woman on the ranch that can’t communicate with other people.
What ideas are developed by the author about isolation and its effect on an individual?
I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of authority over Lennie, “you gonna get that wood”. This is like a parent telling a child to do his chores. On some occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of what he could have if Lennie wasn’t around and contrasts that with George.
Isolation occurs when one does not have a support system where they can talk and express their thoughts and emotions. Isolation in the novel Of Mice and Men highlights the effects of human nature by portraying it as something social and dependant on others rather than individuals first. This is shown by the characters when they get affected by isolation and become destructive, delusional, and desensitized from other people.
