The word isolation is a term that is used to describe someone as being confined without much, or any contact. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the two characters, Crooks and Curley's wife had isolation forced on them throughout the entire course of the novel. The character Crooks was an old black man, during 1937, who lived in a little hut next the pile that was kept for the manure. He lives there by himself away from everyone else, and has no contact other than when he is given orders about work. Curley’s wife has been isolated because she is not trusted by her own husband and everyone considers her to be too flirty and a tart. These two characters both deal with isolation because they both don’t matter to anyone and are …show more content…
They are the only characters who really have that deep sense of loneliness and isolation. They feel though that if the opportunity arises they would do anything to take advantage of it and get out of their isolation, feel like something more. This is seen when Crooks tells Lennie that he wishes in the future he can be educated and that is his American Dream. Many other people in this novel also have this concept of the American Dream which was famous around this time. A character would be Curley’s wife, she is different from Crooks and her american dream was to be famous and to go to Hollywood. In the novel Curley's wife says, “Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes—all them nice clothes like they wear. An’ I coulda sat in them big hotels, an’ had pitchers took of me. When they had them previews I coulda went to them, an’ spoke in the radio, an’ it wouldn’ta cost me a cent because I was in the pitcher. An’ all them nice clothes like they wear. Because this guy says I was a natural,” (89). This shows how she also wanted the American Dream and similarly to Crooks, ultimately that never came true for both of them, and their isolation still overwhelmed
Shannon L. Alder once said, “Somewhere between love and hate lies confusion, misunderstanding, and desperate hope.” Imagine living in a world where you stand in the middle of love and hate. In the novel, “Of Mice and Men,” written by John Steinbeck, one of the most significant characters was Curley’s wife. She lived in a world that was clearly ruled by men. Desperate, smutty, and aggravating where some of the descriptions Steinbeck used for her, but in reality she was a lonely victim in the cruel world she lived in.
Besides loneliness,Curly's wife the only women on the ranch, also suffers regrets and broken dreams.First of all,Curly's wife is very alone in her life. Her relationship with her husband seems to be somewhat unstable, because her husband Curly is always too busy to spend any time with her or give her any of his full attention.Instead,of putting his main focus on her he spends most of his time searching for her around the farm asking ''Any guys seen my wife''(Pg)and threatheing the other men on the farm not to set a single eye on her .As for this, the other men on the farm ignore her when she seeks for company, because they don't want to get into any trouble with Curley about his wife's flirtious attitude towards them.Besides her isolation,Curly's
In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary it states that isolation is the state of being in a place or situation that is separate from others and the act of separating something from other things. Isolation is one of the worst feelings to experience in life. One example of isolation in the article “Isolation is rising in Europe. Can loneliness ministers help change that?” by Nick Noack.
Essay about Curley’s wife Curley’s wife is the only female character in the novel Of Mice of Men; Curley’s wife is never given a name and is only referred to in reference to her husband. Like the other people on the ranch, she is very lonely and has dreams of a better life which never come true. The author John Steinbeck introduces Curley’s wife in a symbolic ness way, this is shown when George is talking to Lennie about the dream and when Curley’s wife first meets both the men. “Both men glanced up, for the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off.
Isolation revealed in two literary works. In many works that we have read isolation is a found in a lot of them. Two different literary works that implicate isolation are “To build a fire” and “The Scarlet letter”. Isolation in the literary work “To build a fire” is exemplified when the man and his dog go up north to search for gold in the worst weather conditions.
The Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines Isolation as “the state of being in a place or situation that is separate from others. Isolation can have positive or negative consequences depending on the situation, and almost every human has or will be faced with at least one scenario where they feel isolated from something. Many authors choose to include the theme of isolation in their writing because it allows their readers to relate to the story.
Another character who is lonely is Curley’s wife. She married Curley only because she never got her letter from the Hollywood producer, not because she loved Curley. As a result, she has no relationship and no friends ,so she wanders the bunkhouse every day looking for somebody to talk to. She wants to escape loneliness by talking to people, but everybody pushes her away, even Curley, her husband. As she says on pg 89, “I don’ like Curly. I could been in the movies, an’ have nice clothes.” This shows that Curley was just her last resort option in her idyllic path to movie stardom. The last character affected by loneliness is Crooks. He is black and thus he is pushed away by everybody and even has to live in an isolated room in the bunkhouse. Because of this he pretends to push away people too even though he longs for their presence because he doesn 't know how to act any differently. In the book, Steinbeck shows that it is almost impossible for Crook’s to escape loneliness unless he escapes out of poverty first.
An idea/opinion that is raised multiple times throughout the story is that women mean no good, just trouble. The novel was written in 1937, and the date is important because in that period of American history , women were seen as inferior to men in politics, work, and in society overall. The picture that is drawn of women is unattractive, helpless, and limited that is shown through Curley’s wife and the girl that had her dress touched by Lennie. We first see this opinion brought up when George mentions the “incident” back in Weeds where “. . .[Lennie]
Curley’s wife is the only woman from the novel of mice and men written by John Steinbeck. She is the wife of the boss’s son Curley. She has no friends besides Curley as the live on a ranch with all of the workers who are all men. She tries to speak to men throughout the novel but none of them want anything to do with her. She is lonely and bored because of this.

Isolation Within everyday life, there are many distinct, powerful emotions that citizens of society can embody. The concept of isolation, and its dangers have been around since human life first began. Isolation can be a helpful concept at times in moderation; however there are many cases in which it can progress beyond a threshold can cause harm and emotional agony. John Steinbeck does a brilliant job illustrating effects of loneliness within three characters who suffered greatly. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, Crooks, Curley’s Wife, and Candy all suffer great isolation at the hands of racial discrimination, sexism, and loneliness.

Isolation is the separation from others and/or society whether it be physically or emotionally. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, I believe that a central theme is that the isolation from family and society, especially at a time when one is faced with difficulty, can have a negative effect on a person. The main characters in the story, Victor Frankenstein and the monster, both experience the same suffering of being alone in different ways. The negative consequences are the death of their loved one and eventually the end of their own.
Steinbeck's novel 'Of Mice and Men' explores the everyday lives of migrant workers during the Great Depression. In this era, American men were forced to leave their families and become 'drifters'. These were people who didn't have a fixed job and continually moved from place to place.
In Of Mice & Men, the character Curley’s Wife is depicted as flirtatious, promiscuous, and insensitive. However, her husband Curley sees her as only a possession. Most of the workers at the ranch see her as a tart, whereas Slim, the peaceful and god-like figure out of all the men, see her as lonely. This answer will tell us to which extent, is Curley’s wife a victim, whether towards her flirtatious behaviour, or to everyone’s representation of her.
