I chose the television series American Horror Stories to do my analysis on breaking the norm in television. I chose this series because it breaks all of the norms due to its graphic content. The show is geared for a more mature audience and is rated TV-MA. Programs rated MA are unsuitable for children under seventeen. There are many examples of deviance in American Horror Stories Freak Show. There is clown with a gory and very bloody face that was bullied as a child that now preys on other humans. He murders the innocent people by knocking them out with a bowling pin and then stabbing them to death. The television show bares all and shows the blood and guts. The show focuses on torture, sexual deviance, violence, and death. There is a character
I think there’s a lot of deviance on television because, that’s what viewers want to see and that’s what makes money. Isn’t this how tabloids have been making money for so many years. The First 48 is based on catching criminals within the first 48 hours by following around homicide detectives. The types of deviances you will see on this show are violent crimes like manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, and first, second or third-degree murders. These crimes are deviance because they are outside of the social norm. This show is also deviant because, most of these crimes are committed by minorities, and poorer class population. The reason I choose this show is
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for regulating the content that a viewer can see on broadcast networks in the United States (Title 47). Content that is prohibited includes highly offensive swearwords and sexual material that is considered offensive by community standards. While the FCC can prevent such indecency and profanity from appearing on broadcast networks like ABC and NBC, it has no jurisdiction over basic cable channels, premium channels or streaming services. In recent years, premium channels like HBO and streaming services like Netflix have released shows with extremely graphic violence and sexual explicit content. This uninhibited content can be consumed by viewers of any age who pay for access to these channels or services. While most of these shows are aimed at an older audience, many younger viewers watch as well. Because these forms of media are becoming more popular in younger generations, it is important to know the effects that uninhibited content could have on younger viewers. Do shows with uninhibited content, like Game of Thrones, make viewers between the ages of 12 and 17 less likely to be disturbed or affected by real world violence?
When you think of art, you’ll think of music, paintings and sculptures of art; but have you ever considered a freak show as an art form? Freak shows and human oddities have been present in society since the early 19th century. However, art itself has come naturally to humans beginning with the cavemen. Society should formally recognize freak shows as a legitimate form of art and expression.
Television violence has been a hot topic in recent years especially the effects it has on young people. As a result there are censorship guidelines notably in the aim not to influence the minds of the young. For example, in America certain sketches of the animated comedy The Simpsons are censored. It is not evenhanded to say
As a genre, the weird is an essential horror component that is used to convey points and ideas that regular Gothic monsters cannot. Dracula is not the fatalistic manifestation of “there is nothing you can do to change the world” that Cthulhu is, and cannot be made into one. When the monsters are tangible, they are understandable. They have a weakness, they can be conquered by humanity and have the world return to a relative normal. The weird can convey the extremes in ways tangible monsters cannot, and make a statement on the world that the Gothic is too limited to address completely. Both Lovecraft and Gilman use the bounds, or lack thereof, of the weird to expand upon ideas that cannot be properly expressed by what would be considered
Horriffice clowns that eat children, deranged murderers slaughtering innocents, or camping trips turned into a disastrous blood bathed frenzy. Horror has found a commonplace in today’s society. There has been an evolution in society’s perception of the of exposing children to horror. Out of this evolution has come the rating scale used on all movies and television series. The rating removes the parent’s ability to judge and decide if their child may watch. Parents and parents only have the right to determine what their child watches on television.
American Horror Story is a television show created by the brilliant Ryan Murphy. The show has an interesting format which consisted of every season being a new story with new characters. Sometimes actors would come back with new parts, and others would leave and come back later. This format keeps the show fresh and interesting, with each season feeling like a new show completely.
Television programming in the United States is considered the most violent in advanced industrialized nations. Nearly two-thirds of all television programming contains violence. Dramas include realistic stories about crime, psychotic murderers, police cases, emergency services, internationalism, and war. As people view these shows, they themselves become more susceptible to commit violent actions (Hepburn).
With that being said, it is still possible to create a sociocultural goal to act as a standard to compare with media policies. Many of these standards are already incorporated into the language of American policies. For example, violence, sexual, profane, and dangerous substance contents are used as a standard in most of the industries’ regulatory systems. Typically these standards are a reflection of risky or illegal behavior that could be modeled by the audience. For the purpose of this article, a look at two of these common standards will be evaluated in two parts. First, an evaluation of the media content’s relationship to influence the audience to conduct in a risky behavior will be reviewed, and second it’s prevalence in the current media landscape will be mentioned. For the sake of relevance towards the legality of the situation, this article will look at the content of violent and sexual content in media. While many other standards can and need to be discussed, these two are the most prevalent in the current media and political conversation. How does Violence Play in Children Media?
Fictionalized horror has been very frightening as well as interesting to me and the community I lived. Civilization and the impact of religion both Christianity and Islam has made most of the superstition to vanish. This made some the believes like ghost uncommon in our society. With fictionalized horror, both videos and stories help us to remember the past. The adults in my community including me, see fictionalized horror as normal and the form or remembrance where as to the kids they seen it scary and unpleasant. Majority of the kids may have nightmare after watching as films.
In every horror film, there is always a serial killer or supernatural being terrorizing an innocent group of individuals. Films such as John Carpenter’s Halloween and Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street involve supernaturally-based serial killers who commit murders in the name of revenge. The gory nature and explicit violence lead people to wonder why these monsters are created. Deep in the typical human subconscious, there are fears and impulses that can only be released through these films.
One of my fondest moments growing up, besides curling up in my mothers’ arms as she cuddled me, was watching reruns of Tom & Jerry. Some parents would question my mother’s choice of letting me watch such a violent cartoon at the tender age of three since it displayed a lot of unforgivingly violent moments such as: how many chokes and gags Tom performed on Jerry and vice versa. It is a tough question to answer, as is the question of whether Tom and Jerry was considered “excessively violent” television program unfit for a young kid. However, in all honesty, it is up to the parents of the child to regulate what they believe personally to be the best fit for a young child to watch. There is a huge difference between now and then: parents have much more power on regulating what their children see on TV with the technology of parental control that started surfacing recently which did not exist in my time. In this context, many people believed, and probably still do, that the government should have acted as a surrogate for parents whose only control of the TV was the power button. Today, parents can filter or tailor TV programs in majority of ways like the V-chip for example, which allows certain programs blocked off if the parents deem it so or based on ratings. There is also another avenue like the cable satellite boxes that exist today which offer a vast variety of screening tools to prevent children from exploring television channels or programs a parent might feel too
Television is a big part of today’s society. Everybody watches television, including the children. There is a potential problem with letting children watch television. Ask this question, would someone let their own child watch some of the programming that they watch, too? Some of these programs are intended for the adult generation, not young children. Violence has a major role in television these days. Letting children watch this violence could corrupt their minds and eventually lead to bad behavior. There needs to be a limitation on the types of television programming that parents let their children watch, because violence in television can negatively affect children.
In our study, we chose to watch an adult drama, The Walking Dead, which airs on the television network KCOP, on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and follows a group of survivors during the age of the zombie apocalypse. The second show we chose was a children’s cartoon, the Powerpuff Girls, which airs on the television network Boomerang, on weekdays at 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM, and features 3 girls with supernatural powers who are always called up by the mayor to defend the town. Goals of this study include quantifying instances of violence in these selected shows and comparing types of violence that occur in both types of shows based on how graphically detailed the violence acts were, if the perpetrators were successful, and how diverse the perpetrators and victims were.
