What is discrimination?

Discrimination can be described as treatment which is unjust and prejudicial of different groups of people which may be based on a number of factors; examples being on the grounds of a person’s age, race, sex, culture etc.

What is covert discrimination?
Covert discrimination can be described as discreetly treating someone less favourably than another person. An example of covert discrimination would be an employer judging a person because they have a foreign name and not giving them the job.

Every person should have access to human rights and must in turn respect the human rights of others. When someone’s rights have been infringed, they have been breached or violated. An example of this would be a person being denied healthcare because of their religion. However, this would be illegal and if the employee infringing the rights of the service user was reported, they would be prosecuted.

What is abuse of power?
Abuse of power can be described as using one’s power in a way which is abusive. It can take a number of forms. These forms may be taking advantage of a person, sharing information which should not be accessible to the public, or punishing a person if they don’t comply.

What is bullying?
Bullying can be described as repeated behaviour with the intent to hurt a person, whether it be physically or emotionally. This may be aimed at a based on a number of characteristics which may include a person’s race, gender, religion, sexuality, cultural background or any other aspect.

What is labelling?
Labelling is a word which is applied to a person which can be considered to sum that person up. This may result in the person losing their identity and so they may be treated less
