Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon poem. Beowulf was set during the sixth-century in a place known as Southwestern Sweden & Denmark. Beowulf is a young warrior with a lot of heroic qualities.
In Beowulf one can read about pagan and Christian beliefs. Beowulf’s a poem that regards the primary faith as Christian faith. One example is the description as Grendel. He was described as “H was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain.”

Beowulf is divided into three parts in which Beowulf fights a dragon, a monster named Grendel, and Grendel’s mother. The Anglo-Saxon people have many values. There are many Anglo-Saxon values throughout Beowulf such as loyalty, strength, bravery, generosity, honor, and glory.

The epic poem, “Beowulf”, shows many references to the influence of Christianity on English culture. There are many parallels between characters in “Beowulf” and characters from the Bible. Many Christian themes and virtues are also portrayed in “Beowulf”. Throughout “Beowulf”, the theme of Christianity manifests itself through Christ-like images of Beowulf as well as his strength in God allowing him to ward off monsters of paganism.

It was not until the Romans took control of Britain did Christianity appear. However, the influence of Roman pagan customs remained. Even though the Romans brought Christianity to Britain it did not spread quickly because the Romans did not make an effort to Christianize the Celts.
The signs of Christianity not only were seen in Beowulf himself but, were also seen in other characters of the story. The specific role of his companions can be seen towards of the beginning of the epic when going to aid the Danes in freeing the people from a vicious monster named Grendel. The 12 apostles in biblical texts did the same in most cases; going to different villages preforming exorcisms and riding them of demons. While at the same time assisting Jesus or Beowulf in any way that they could. In the poem of Beowulf it talks about how the strength of man combined with strength and determination helped and change the country by defeating the evil spirit grendel. The Beowulf poet wrote this poem with an influence that are very similar to Christianity. The theme of the poem makes many references to many christian elements such as the evil of sin, judgement, betrayal, and references to god and how god sees things. Readers will be influenced the meaning of the story and understand how its similar to christianity.

The Europe of the past maybe distant in time but not by morals, Both present-day Europe and the Europe of the past are Christian based societies with pagan tendencies. The unknown author was most likely a Christian monk recording a primarily pagan story, in which a beautiful blend of religions was created that come together to forge an epic poem. From the late 6th century towards the end of the Anglo Saxon period, through monasteries and missionaries, Christianity spread north and westward. By the time Beowulf was written down, the religion was well-established in England. Nevertheless, Beowulf himself embodies characteristics of both, occasionally his actions say he is one more so than the other. Religion can be seen throughout this piece making itself present through the actions of characters, diction chosen by the author, and symbolism between Christ and main characters such as Beowulf and Grendel, as well as the soldier's religious beliefs.
