Putting Yourself Before Others It is important to have bravery because without it you won't be able to get anything done if you are scared. It is hard to be brave sometimes because you don't know what the outcome could be. In NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, NightJohn is a free man who escaped slavery, he is devoted to teaching slaves to read and write when they aren't supposed to know how to, this could get them killed. NightJohn shows bravery by sneaking in the quarters at night and teaching them how to write letters and spell. You need to be brave to take risks. First, when NightJohn first came to the plantation and met Sarny he had scars on his back and he had bumpy skin from where he was whipped. This showed that he was misbehaving at his other plantation. Was this from him teaching slaves to read and write? NightJohn agrees to teach Sarny to read and write if Sarny gave him tobacco leaves. Next, slaves try to escape to get a better life than being forced to be a breeder or working in the fields all day(pg. 42). The slaves were living in small quarters with many other slaves. They get fed very little food to survive and become malnourished. Alice a breeder for years became …show more content…
61). Waller catches her and Sarny ends up lying to Waller about what she was doing. Waller knew she was lying and kicks her in the stomach. Sarny keeps saying that she doesn’t know anything about writing. Sarny escapes Waller and runs to Mammy in the quarters and he assumes that Mammy is teaching Sarny. Mammy is punished by being chained to the spring house for two days without sitting. When she is freed from being chained Waller puts a chain on Mammy and makes her pull the buggy with everyone watching. NightJohn is there watching and confesses to Waller that it is him teaching Sarny to write. Waller punishes NightJohn by chopping of his two middle toes. Bravery is the engine of change in the
This is an essay about NightJohn and how he needed to use Bravery, leadership, and freedom to gain control. NightJohn is a book about slavery and not just any slaves but NightJohn and Sarny.
Courage is important because if you’re not courageous you will not explore new things, get new experiences. An example of courage happens in the first couple of pages when Jasper and Charlie go out to explore late at night into the forest. If they haven’t gone out there they would’ve never found the body
A Slave life was hectic most slaves were poorly fed, housed, and clothed. They were fed from the left overs of their masters. The slaves of planters got clothes twice a year and shoes once a year. By that time is wasn’t that bad getting clothes and shoes because they were even lucky to have shoes. Their masters would barley dress them, leaving them to work out side on the plantations with nothing but bare meat. Especially when gotten into trouble, they would be outside freezing. slave families had gardens and sometimes could and hunt. The food that they would hunt with would be there dinner, but they had to share with their family. In one room of a slave "household" there was about 10 people in one
One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
In the novel Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, the common theme tackle adversity when times get rough is conveyed throughout the story. Many events that occur often show many adversity the slaves had to overcome by accepting horrific punishments. For instance, when Sarny the protagonist of the story begins to learn new letters and words from Nightjohn, she gets very excited that she scribbled the word “Bag” in the dirt, but was caught doing so by the slaves’ master Clel Waller. “ Tell what your doing… I didn’t say anything… What are you scribbling in the dirt… I thought I’ll lie (Paulsen 62). Sarny was caught scribbling the new word, and she tried to avoid the trouble she had just created, by lying to Waller. Although, Sarny had thought for a mere second that her
Night john was a book about a escaped slave. He went back into the south to help other slaves escape. He taught slaves to be able to read and write. The NightJohn book was published in 1993 and the movie was created in 1996. There was bravery and prejudice even the feeling of freedom in this book and movie. NightJohn was a brave man even with the risk of slavery over his head.
Mammy is very against John teaching Sarny to read and write because she is afraid that they will be caught in the process. John says, “They have to read and write. We all have to read and write about this - what they doing to us. It has to be written.” Mammy doesn’t know what to say, so she turns her back and walks away so John can continue.
Next during Mammy´s punishment, NightJohn comes out from the crowd and tells Waller the truth. NightJohn says ¨She dont know nothing, it was me who taught the girl the letters¨ (page 72). Gary Paulsen shows alot of the perseverance in his book through the character NightJohn. NightJohn shows large amount of perseverance based on his actions in this part of the book. He shows that by taking the brutal punishment after and carries on with his plans of helping
We have been asked why is it important to be courageous? In reality there are many reasons, but only few I can explain. We have to be courageous so we can try new things, do something different, or get out of our comfort zone.
Bravery is not inherent, it is rather acquired from the circumstances or situation faced in the life. People face lot of problems in their lives and to cope with those situations and move in with one's life is the sheer example of being brave. The same has been depicted by both the authors in their respective books. First by Kaye Gibbons in her very famous book "Ellen Foster" where in the protagonist is shown as homeless girl with no one to take care of, yet she finds a way to live her life and find herself a house worth living. Second, by Mark twain in his
True bravery is when you’re aware that the odds are against you, however, you have the ability to persevere through it. Even though you don’t want to complete the task ahead of you, an inner force brings you the motivation to do it. Sincere courageousness doesn’t always entail violence; in fact, courage comes from the choices made within that affect yourself or those around you. The outcome may not always be to your advantage, but
Part III. Stowe describes the slave auction at which Uncle Tom is sold for the benefit of her Northern readers who are not familiar with slavery. She explains why negroes appear to be happy in slavery when in reality they are not: The dealers in the human article make scrupulous and systematic efforts to promote noisy mirth among them, as a means of drowning reflection, and rendering them insensible to their condition. The whole object of the training to which the negro is put, from the time he is sold in the northern market till he arrives south, is systematically directed towards making him callous, unthinking, and brutal.
Bravery is the mental or moral strength to venture and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Fear is what one feels when fighting, knowing that he or she could die. For example, when
My aunt was quite an old woman, and had been sick several years; in rains I have seen her moving from one part of the house to the other, and rolling her bedclothes about to try to keep dry- - everything would be dirty and muddy. I lived in the house with my aunt. My bed and bedstead consisted of a board wide enough to sleep on- - one end on a stool, the other placed near the fire. My pillow consisted of my jacket- - my covering was whatever I could get. My bedtick was the board itself. And this was the way the single men slept- - but we were comfortable in this way of sleeping, being used to it. I only remember having but one blanket from my owners up to the age of nineteen, when I ran away (Drew 45). These living conditions caused many to resort to immoral methods of survival, as Henderson relates: Our allowance was given weekly- - a peck of sifted corn meal, a dozen and a half herrings, two and a half pounds of pork. Some of the boys would eat this up in three days- - then they had to steal, or they could not perform their daily tasks. They would visit the hog- pen, sheep- pen, and granaries. I do not remember one slave but who stole some things- - they were driven to it as a matter of necessity. I myself did this- (Drew 48). Mealtime was far from a joyous occasion. In regard to cooking, sometimes many had to cook at one fire, and "before all could get to the fire the overseers horn would sound: then they must go at any
Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess this great quality. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come about. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Either risk is serious enough that a person must have courage to endure that particular risk. Courage can occur anytime, anywhere, and often in our everyday lives. Everyone will experience courage no matter how young,
