One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). In the novel Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, the common theme tackle adversity when times get rough is conveyed throughout the story. Many events that occur often show many adversity the slaves had to overcome by accepting horrific punishments. The NightJohn book was published in 1993 and the movie was created in 1996. There was bravery and prejudice even the feeling of freedom in this book and movie. Mammy is very against John teaching Sarny to read and write because she is afraid that they will be caught in the process. John says, “They have to read and write.
