The fourth grade was a very traumatic year for me. My only sister went to middle school, my mom who always was at home across the street from school got a job, and I didn’t know one person in my class. For the first time in my life I was on my own and I was frightened even by the idea of it. During that year my grades dropped and I wasn’t social with my classmates. I started to fail in my favorite class, math. The work became pointless to me and I started to neglect my work. Grades are not determined by the teacher, but by the student. When a student applies the growth mindset into not just everyday life, but to all their school work, they will see drastic changes in their grades. Throughout her book, Dweck uses examples of applying the growth mindset in schoolwork to everyday life. Living with the growth mindset not only makes someone a more successful person, but also makes people feel better about themselves. Michael Jordan, one the greatest basketball players of all time, applied the growth mindset in his basketball career from the second he first failed. Sophomore year instead of trying out for the team, the night before I walked up to my dad and said I don’t want to play basketball anymore. Just like that I had given up and quit on something that I could’ve just put a little work into and would’ve been great. A fixed mindset has a serious impediment on a student's learning. Students who don't apply themselves to their school work won't be able to adapt to school as it increasingly becomes more difficult. Throughout my life, I’ve had both fixed and growth mindset, but after reading Dweck’s Mindset, I have learned about how I can apply the growth mindset into my life and improve myself all around. My mindset is all about how much I want to apply myself. If I put my all into everything, I can do nothing but grow into an astonishing human being. Growth mindset is how to come to practice on time to lazy to come to practice on time a expect to play in the game. They don’t come to practice on time so they can improve in the game. Dweck gives an example that relates to this. She states, “Michael Jordan said I missed more than a than nine thousand shots after every time he went back and shot the ball a hundred times” (100). Jordan has a growth mindset because he works on his shot a hundred times when he missed his shot. This quote can relate to some players on the football team cause when they make a mistake they practice over and over again, but the ones with a fixed mindset dont even show up to practice. This is even worse when we lose.
Dweck espouses the virtues of a growth mindset and explains how it can help people overcome challenges in their lives. On the other hand, Alfie Kohn, does not fully agree with Dweck’s point of view. He argues that a student’s confidence in themselves is not based off of if they see themselves as dumb or smart, but rather how they have done in that area in the past. However, Alfie Kohn’s The Perils of ‘Growth Mindset’ Education: Why We’re Trying to Fix our Kids When We Should Be Fixing the System, proposes another view. Also, Home Life is a third factor that impacts a student’s success. I believe all three of these are integral to a student’s accomplishments.
A wise person said, “you don’t grow through success, you grow through what you go through.” The book, Mindest written by Carol S. Dweck, examines how the fixed and growth mindset leads to generating the motivations and conduct of individuals. This book is essential because it educates people on the notion of self- improvement in regard to learning, acquiring, and improving relationships with others as there is always room for progress. A growth mindset is very favorable in regard to improving love, family, friendships, and parenting relationships through many aspects. To begin, a growth mindset helps to enhance a relationship through forgiveness, respect, and self-improvement.
Basically, individuals with a fixed mindset often feel measured by a failure, sometimes permanently. Unfortunately, failed attempts are viewed as a label rather than an opportunity to plan a new path of succes. On the other hand, an individual with a growth mindset views a failed attempt as an opportunity to take action, to confront obstacles, to keep up with their schoolwork, and/or to better manage and organize their time. Growth mindset individuals believe that qualities can be developed, expanded, and eventually result in a successful outcome. A second lesson learned is the power of labels and the stereotype of ability; this lesson is undoubtedly one of the most enlightening. Dweck discovered in one of her studies that, “... ability praise often pushed students right into a fixed mindset, and they showed all the signs of it too. When we gave them a choice, they rejected a challenging new task that they could learn from. They didn’t want to do anything that could expose their flaws and call into question their talent” (72). One’s mindset determines their reaction to labels and stereotypes. In the article, “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol S. Dweck, he states, “The students held hard work in high regard, believing that the more you labored at something, the better you would become at it” (23). What he means by this is that there are students who don’t try in academics or are naturally smart but just lose interest in school. The quote means that students who keep a goal in their mind, the better you will get at it. Dweck also states that “As we had predicted, the students with a growth mindset felt that learning was more important” (23). Again, the quote basically says that students who have a clear mindset on what goal they would like to accomplish, nothing would keep them from learning. At the same time that I believe students with a growth mindset are motivated to learn, I also believe that it is hard to bounce back when something doesn’t go as planned. When this happens, it is easy to give up and let it pass by. Although, persevering is just as easy. This is my second strength. Dweck praises students who stay motivated after a setback. It is impressive when a student bounces back after a setback, because not everyone stays motivated when faced with that challenge. For example, when I found out that my teacher misplaced my homework packet I was devastated. Although it was only for a few minutes. Immediately after going home that night I completed a second homework packet to replace the lost one and turned it in the next day just in time. I was surprised with myself and so was my teacher. He praised me for being resilient in the face of a setback.
This shows that having a good mindset is important for success because those with a growth mindset are more likely to try new things, which leads to developing new skills. Having a growth mindset is like traveling to a place you have never been before. Additionally, the author adds that if you can figure out that you have a fixed mindset, you can change it. Being in a fixed mindset can be very challenging for people. This is why people can change their mindset.

In seventh grade, grading is stricter and the environment does not involve personal feelings. Heather Landers argues in her article “Help Your Students Develop a Growth Mindset” she declares “Talk about adopting a growth mindset in class—tell stories about former students who thought they would never learn the subject but who, with persistence and effort, ended up being successful in the course” (6). Landers point is by clarifying that by giving students examples which could give the students a chance to see what could happen if they took on a growth mindset. As Tim Elmore put it's in his article “Four Ways to Develop a Growth Mindset in Students” he clarifies “Growing people determine to surround themselves with growth mindset people, who become contagious with others. You will reflect the books you read and the people you position next to you” (4). Elmore is insisting the people students hang around reflects on the choices they make and what mindset they will have. According to Judy Willis, “When you are experiencing highly negative emotions or severe stress, incoming information is routed to a different part of your brain”. When the high-level thinking happens, the information routed is to the reactive lower brain. When that happens, the memory is affected, all active learning stops. A fourth way is recognized and valuing incremental progress boosts a person’s motivation and enables him or her to deal effectively with setbacks. According to Dweck, “people with growth mindsets, believe their abilities can be developed though dedication and hard work- brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have these qualities.” With a growth mindset, people realized by having a failure in the past don’t mean they will in the future.
I’m going to tell you how student learn these mindsets. In the 90s parents thought the most important thing that you child should have was self-esteem. But were they messed up is that you cant just hand your kids self-esteem. They took a poll among parents and found that 85% of parents thought that it was necessary to “praise” their children’s abilities to boost confidence. Now were going to talk about growth mindset. These students believe that intelligence is something that can be gained through education and effort. I wish in high school that I would of taken it more serious because now I could have had a growth mindset witch would of helped me out a lot in college. Those students have growth mindsets. They believe that you can gain intelligence through learning. Those with a growth mindset had a very straightforward idea of effort. The idea that the harder you work the greater the outcome is and I think that’s true. When these students had a set back in school they simply just study more or differently next time. That was my biggest set back in high school. Many bright students find grade school fairly easy and get right through it. But later on in life like in college they struggle. They don’t want to put the time into something and feel dumb when they get a bad grade on it. That’s bad because you should never feel dumb about something that you tried your hardest to complete.
