The important thing in each paragraph the main point, and all sentences in the paragraph should be clearly related to that point. The main idea must be supported with examples, specific information that develops or details. Paragraph writing is the foundation of all essay writing, even if the essay builds by forms like expository, persuasive, narrative, or creative. Also, these paragraphs depend on the four essentials like unity, order, coherence, and completeness. The first essay "Simplicity" by William Zinsser, it depends on expository form, I really enjoyed when I read this effective's essay. The author did a great job to address each paragraph and discusses the American's writing problems of the "Clutter", and how it is not enough to simple. The part of this problem is the Clutter minds and the writer gives us good examples to understand this disease such as in paragraph 2, and "the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components" in paragraph 3 page 177 by thinking when the writer usage of long words will help their essay to be better. And how to use the simple words with less clutter it is fine such as" Clear thinking becomes clear writing; one can't exist without the other" in paragraph 7. Also, I like paragraph 4 -5 how he rewrites the President speeches into simple terms. I believe why many of people today don't like the reading because some authors and writer don't write with simplicity and their writing are clutter. The second
What is the main purpose of paragraphing? The main purpose of paragraphing is to prove points that support the thesis and therefore the spacing separates each point which allows them to be fully developed.
1. Paragraph One - Introduction (include a lead/hook, set the context for the essay, give the three main ideas, thesis statement is last sentence)
5) Zinsser's first and lasts paragraphs serve to introduce and conclude his essay very good because he says in the beginning that Clutter is a disease of American writing and in the ending he says that if you find writing is hard , it is because you make it hard for yourself. It is up to the individual if you want to write your paragraph in proper English.
| The introductory paragraph provides a preamble, clearly states the essay topic and provides a clear statement of how the argument will be organized.(8.5-10)
In this chapter, Lunsford details the planning and drafting process for a writer to organize their ideas with either a formal outline or a rough plan. Lunsford reminds writers to be flexible during the drafting process and not to think twice about changing elements of the essay at this point in the process. Lunsford goes on to explain the qualities academic paragraphs must have these include unity, development and coherence. To obtain unity within a paragraph all sentences should relate to the topic sentence of the paragraph. When developing a paragraph it is important to switch between general and specific ideas in the paragraph, while supporting those ideas with details, evidence and examples as required. Ensuring a paragraph is coherent is crucial when developing an academic paragraph. Because readers need to be able to follow a writers ideas easily, Lunsford gives her readers a method to follow to achieve this goal. This method includes using the general to specific ideas, repetition, parallel structures, and using transition words. The author notes that this method should also be used to link paragraphs
I feel like the body paragraphs are the strongest. I believe this because I feel like the details given help paint a picture. Also I spent the most time on. I think the weakest part in my essay are the introductory and conclusion paragraphs. I have always struggled with these and I am trying to get better. I know for sure that my thesis are never up to par. I did have some trouble in my body paragraphs I could not remember if when paraphrasing or summarizing you add () this and a page number, so I did it
Have you had an essay due and your grade depended on this essay and you don’t know how to write an essay let alone receive a decent grade? Well this is your key to passing your class. The essay should start with an introduction. The introduction, remember to be amicable, should start with a statement of your subject, then lead to a very specific statement of your main point, or thesis. Sometimes an essay begins with an attention grabber, such as a challenging claim, or surprising story to catch a reader's attention. The thesis should tell in one or two sentences, what your overall point or argument is, and briefly, what your main body paragraphs will be about. Then the introduction paragraph should
As mentioned before, simplicity is typically achieved after practicing and honing skills, a student setting that as their goal could be a daunting task. There are professional writers that struggle with sentence clutter, trying too hard to make themselves more intelligent by using larger words and more drawn out sentences. This can prove detrimental to their overall writings, the so-called “secret” to good writing is to break a sentence down to barest components and run with it, there is a nice example of this in this chapter. In one of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidential memos, the memo read “Such preparations shall be made as will completely obscure all Federal buildings and non-Federal buildings occupied by the Federal government during an air raid for any period of time from visibility by reason of external or internal illumination.” Roosevelt plainly said “Tell them, that in buildings where they have to keep the work going to put something across the windows.” This a perfect example of simplifying an over-complicated sentence or phrase. while this may make a complex thing like simple writing look easier than it really is, it gives a good example of how simplifying a writing can greatly increase the chance for their chance of having it being understood by a wider array of readers. Zinsser quotes Henry David Thoreau in the writing, saying “Simplify, simplify”, This is strong advice when a writer is over-complicating their writing with inflated words and sentence
In my opinion, I need help with all the writing principles; but if I had to choose three I would pick, control paragraph length, avoid redundancy, and use active voice. I will start with control paragraph length; I do seem to put more than one topic in my paragraphs (Cardon, 2013). I understand that readers who read my work could miss the idea I am trying to get through to them.
The first body paragraph should be the weakest or simplest way to get the overall point of the essay across to the readers. This will be the foundation of all three points,
Is the narrator of “Bartleby” a selfish or an unselfish man? Defend your answer with evidence from the story. The narrator of Bartleby is not a selfish man. Instead, he was the type of man who tried to do everything for someone who was in need. He tried his best to be there for one of his workers when he knew he was not well. Bartleby was a man who was a great worker. He was a man who knew what he was doing and what needed to be done from him. He was extremely caught up with his work, as he had nothing else to do and no one to be with. The story changed when Bartleby's attitude about everything changed. The first thing he did was he prefer not to do what his boss asked him to do. He gave no explanation why but made it clear that he won't
You do not need to write whole paragraphs for any of the below sections. You simply need to write complete sentences that show the basic outline of your essay. Doing this will give you a guide when writing your rough draft.
Conn McQuinn from Puget Sound ESD in Burien, Washington guides teachers and students alike through a writing process with the analogy of creating a "Magnifique" pizza and Six Trait Writing Links.
