All throughout my life, my mother has been my guide, my mentor, and my best friend. During my freshman year at Montgomery Blair High School I had decided to try for the girls’ varsity Lacrosse team. When I shared the news, my friends flooded me with questions as to why I wanted to try out for the supposedly “white” sport, and my parents simply did not understand what the game was. The phrase “white” sport was not unjustified as there were only two black girls on the team. Playing lacrosse became the first step to my isolation from my team, my friends, and my family. Finding equilibrium between school and lacrosse became challenging and quitting seemed like the easy way out. Seeing that I was overwhelmed with the draining practices and my school
On 18Oct16 at 1111 hrs. I, Deputy Halbasch, was dispatched to 19609 Hwy 226 for a disturbance.
A warm bead of sweat rolled down my brow in such a slow manner I thought that I had received a cut on my head and I was bleeding from whacking my head on the door panel when I exited out of the cruiser. I wiped it away as I leaned back against the hood of the car, sweating up a storm in the white polo that was supposed to be a uniform.
My job at injury was working as an assembler for Volt Information Services, Inc. This job was in the heavy duty range. I had no history of injuries to my right foot prior to my injury. On a typical day I walked and stood for the whole eight hour shift, and was required to lift “nodes” which weighed 18-100 pounds each, about 30 times a day.
On 08-26-2017 at 1908 hours I was dispatched to 1029 South 11th Street in reference to a suicidal subject.
My schooling began in Cali, Colombia. At the age of two, my mother matriculated me at local nursery because she worked in the daytime. When I was four, my mother enrolled me in a non-religious private pre-school. The school was known for having a strong program in math and literacy. In my country, education is mandatory until middle school. My homeland uses an alphabet and similar to English it goes from left to right. In pre-school, I remember singing the national anthem every morning. I would stand up alongside of many other students and with our hand across our chest we would sing the entire national anthem. I also remember doing a lot of hands-on activities like counting the elements of each set and making a line to the corresponding number
After arriving on location, I approached from the driver side and made contact with the male, later identified as Steven R. Dennis. I advised Steven the reason I was called out to the scene and I asked what his whereabouts of the night where. Steven stated that he was over a friend’s house and they were hanging out and that he consumed only two (2) beers. As we were engaged in a conversation, Steven was extremely slow with his responses and his eyes were bloodshot. As he was speaking, I could also smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the interior of the vehicle. I then asked Steven to step out of the vehicle so I could administer SFST's. Steven complied and opened the door. He then stepped out and nearly fell. He used to left hand as balance as he rested it on the roof of the vehicle. I also observed the Steven was in a soft cast on his foot from what he called an "Achilles’ injury." I advised Steven then walk towards the front of my vehicle so I could speak with him further. I asked Steven again how many drinks he consumed tonight.
Chelsea woke up with the most peculiar feeling on monday. She felt like she had had the most vivid dream last night—one of those really disturbing ones that you couldn't quite remember but you seemed glad it wasn't real when you woke up. Shrugging off the thought, she quickly got changed into her uniform and headed to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat before heading off to high school. It was the last week of term before the holidays, and she was looking forward to spending some time with friends over the break.
I realized that my Grandfather was different the first year of preschool. Winter break was fast approaching and all of the garrulous tots were sharing their plans for the weeks off. I, eager as the rest about the holidays, elucidated my plans to travel to my Dziadek’s house for a large Christmas celebration. I explained how my family and I would eat a dinner of fish and babka and later share Oplatek, a holy Christmas wafer. My classmates looked at me with questioning eyes when I elaborated my plans, confused about what exactly a Dziadek and oplatek was. I did not have an answer to their questions, being only five years old. Bewildered, I arrived home and immediately told my mother about how my classmates questioned my grandfather’s identity
It is a warm May night, and I couldn't be any happier. I am sitting in the middle of the Gwinnett Arena anxiously waiting to hear my name. "Look someone is waving the Mexican flag up there," the guy next to me said as he points to the audience. I turn around to see, and realize it's my family. I wasn't embarrassed at all. Actually, I was happy to see the excitement on their face. They call my name, and I go up to get my diploma. "WOW! I MADE IT," I think to myself. I immidiately wave my diploma at them and they wave the Mexican flag even harder. After the ceremony was over, we had over 500 seniors trying to find their families, it was total chaos. I didn't have a way to contact my family since we weren't allowed to have phones with us during
When an individual asks “What was a moment that has changed you forever”, it can be extremely difficult to answer. Such a broad question brings up many notable moments that widen an already large selection of memories. But, if I had to pick one that makes me smile every time I look back onto it. It would by my very first concert. It was not only my first time seeing my favorite band live, but it was also my first real experience seeing music played live. Reflecting on all the laughs and memories I made that day only assured me that I would remember it forever. The stories that came along with it are also quite fun to tell.
My personal Narrative is about my brother having a seizure and almost died. So May 2, 2014 me and my siblings went to my mom's house for the day (before she moved) we wanted to watch a movie so we watched Frozen so that's what we did and it also was a really hot day but my brother thinks it is the opposite so he wore a jacket and long pants, so a little bit before the movie ended my brother Isaac fell asleep on this bed my mom has. About 20 minutes later my mom told me and my sisters that these people were going to fix the dryer so we had to move the bed isaac was on to my mom's room but then as soon as we started to move the bed my brother was having a seizure so we put the bed down and my mom put him on his side and put a wet washcloth on
Born in South Philadelphia in 1979, I was raised in Passyunk Homes, an urban housing project community geared towards low-income families. As the youngest in a single-parent family of three children, I grew-up in a very loving home with a mother and family members that continually stressed the importance of both education and strong family values.
I finally got round to drinking my coffee at about dinner time as I was studying for Tech. I heard shouting and then Jade and Bec dramatically entered the room. It looked like Bec had been crying for a while.
January 22 was my birthday. I got some pretty great gifts, but it wasn’t the most ideal birthday ever. My dog ended up running away early that morning. It was the saddest birthday ever. He’s my best friend and I didn’t even get to spend my birthday with him. He’s a hunting dog, so whenever he smells something, he takes off after it and never turns around. The past times he’s ran away, he has come back. All I did was pray that he would come back. He’s my best friend and I couldn’t imagine my life without him.
DAAAAA DA DA DA DA DAAAAAAAA DA DA. I still remember the feeling in my stomach as I watched the flashing chandelier rise to the ceiling right above my head. To think that I did not want to be there in the first place. Boy had my mom proved me wrong. It had all started at my Grandparents 50th anniversary celebration…
