They have a variety of models ranging from the traditional cigarettes, to different sizes, shapes, and features. The battery-powered device is not regulated by the FDA and does not use tobacco. Instead they deliver nicotine to the user through the conversion of various chemicals such as nicotine, propylene, glycol, glycerin, and flavoring chemicals in to vapor to be inhaled. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are devices that deliver aerosolized nicotine to the user by heating a liquid (typically propylene glycol) containing nicotine and flavoring agents. Most devices share a common design – a plastic tube containing a battery, an airflow sensor, a heating element and a cartridge containing the liquid (Figure 1).
Originally manufactured in China in 2003, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) were manufactured as a better way of inhaling nicotine without the health effects of smoking tobacco. They were developed to provide the tobacco user with a device that would heat up liquid nicotine and other chemicals including carcinogens that once heated would create a vapor in which the user would inhale. Currently, the FDA Center for Tobacco Products regulates cigarettes, tobacco, and smokeless tobacco and only e-cigarettes that are marketed to the consumer for therapeutic purposes are regulated by the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The role of a pharmacologist is to be concerned with actions that are being used with drugs. The article explains on the concerns of a E-cigarette and how it still contains super dangerous chemicals. The E-cigarette was brought up to take the place of the traditional lung killing cigarette, the new cigarette claims that it's healthier and that they are reusable, but pharmacologists had worries that it was still dangerous after numerous of studies the new cigarette was still harmful in other ways causing it to be dangerous still. I believe it is the pharmacologists job to approve of new legal drugs coming out to protect the country from being exposed to dangerous drugs or tobacco items.
The addiction to tobacco, nicotine, and smoking is something the humans have embraced and battled since the early 1800’s. With more and more people falling into the habit and becoming addicted, many detrimental health effects on the body caused people to question what was going on and what was causing these negative reactions in the body. Gilbert in 1963, who lived in a society where smoking was generally accepted or even the norm but he saw the dangers of smoking tobacco and was one of the first to try to innovate alternate intake methods. 40 years later Han Lik, a chinese businessman, began to further expand on Herbert A. Gilberts idea of delivery of nicotine without the plethora of harmful chemicals in a lit cigarette. Cigarette smoking is something people all over the world have been doing for about 2000 years. Back in 2003, the first electronic cigarette was successfully created by a gentleman named Hon Lik. Lik was a 52 year old pharmacist at the time, whom of which was also a smoker.
