r. Mcloud wrote a book about Evansville in World War II. In this book Dr. Mcloud wanted to ensure people that the story of Evansville in this time would not be lost, but passed on. In the beginning of his speech, he thanked people for helping him get the information he needed in order to write his book. He also thanked everyone that set up and gave him the opportunity to have the book signing. After thanking these people, Dr. Mcloud acknowledged all of the Veterans in the room. To my surprise there were many. Dr. Mcloud then showed a picture of his father, who was a veteran from WWII. named Lachlan Macleod. He was in the navy and sailed the sea passing on desired supplies. Woman and men worked in these shipyards. Black workers were expected to have lower class jobs. This showed me that discrimination still occured. Evelyn Cox, a ship welder, stated that her job wasn’t as bad as a day of ironing. The LST was a ship, designed to go on the beach and unload equipment like tanks. These were used a lot during the war. P47 airplanes were also put together in Evansville. This was the most effective aircraft of WWII. This plane could be blown to pieces and still leave the passenger safe. Along with the making of Evansville, Dr. Mcloud talked about the prostitution and strikes that occurred during that time. After learning these things, I became very interested in the history of Evansville. In the last part of the presentation Dr. Mcloud talked about all the lives that had been destroyed from the war. The first man killed in World War II, from Evansville died at Pearl Harbor. On November 11, 1945 four hundred and fifty nine local men had been killed in the war. Thirty three men from Evansville University died fighting. WWII was the most destructive war in American history and greatly affected the city of Evansville. I am so glad that I attended the book signing. I learned so much about the history of Evansville. The things that Dr. Mcloud talked about were very interesting to me. Some of the things he talked about are still around in Evansville today. After his presentation, we discussed that Evansville needed a WWII
