“Ethnic hash” Vs “What is C.I” “Ethnic hash” and What is “Cultural Identity” both talk about cultural identity and how it affects people throughout their lives mentioning things like family traditions stereotypes and languages. “Ethnic hash” is a personal essay that uses informal voice to communicate the opinions and personal experience of the author ,it is written by Patrica. J Williams. She generally talks about food in her essay as she is preparing for a book party so she tells us how her family would make types of food such as black beans, fried rice and chicken. It is considered informal because she uses words that don’t use academic voice and it uses contractions for example in one sentence she says “I tell you i had to go to the dictionary” she is arranging the words differently many would just say i had to go to the dictionary instead of adding “I tell you” to the …show more content…
“What is CI” is a informational text which means it only provides a some information on the topic without personal experience or commentary,it is written by elise Trumbull and Maria Pacheco The authors do not talk about food and do not give any personal experience or personal information on their races. In “what is C.I” culture is described as an invisible web which probably means it is hard to see despite being really big and really complex, they say they get this from garcia and Geertz’s definitions of cultural identity. The fact that they are using historical figures to back up their statement and ideas shows that they are trying to give academic information. Normally in an essay or article you give people evidence as to why what you say could be true, one way people do this is to use quotes from people that are known by everyone as very knowledgable professionals on the topic the writer is
(Trumbull and Pacheco 9). After analyzing several texts, the reader recognizes that three important elements of a person's cultural identity include beliefs, food, ethnicity, and
Cultural identity is feeling of belonging to a group, it is an element that is brought about when a person comprehends his/her own culture, it is part of a person’s self –conception and perception and this helps the person to also comprehend and appreciate the culture of other people as well. It is related to nationality, religion, ethnicity, generation or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. So culture plays an important role in one’s life because it is a strong factor in shaping one 's identity.
Defining exactly what shapes ethnic identity in the United States is the hardest question I can imagine being asked. As a child born in the United States, I find this question so difficult because I have been exposed to a large variety of cultures within the small boundaries of my own family. This makes it very difficult to determine one, or even a few characteristics that define ethnic identity. In the case of many of these novels, the task of defining ethnic identity is not so complicated. The list of determinants that I believe to define ethnic identity includes language, geographic location, and tradition.
Using quotes from the text is an important way to support your ideas. In most papers, I would expect at least 3-4 really strong quotations used to prove your topic. The important word in the last sentence is “prove.” You do NOT use quotations to establish facts from the story. You use quotations to PROVE something.
There are two different dimensions of our identities: ethnicity and race. Ethnicity refers to one’s belonging to a specific cultural, or racial group that makes up culture, race language, and/or place of origin. For example, one can be African-American but have different ethnicities, one African-American and the other African-Caribbean decent. Race is a social construct that can be changed over time. Historically, referring to its specific characteristics one possesses based on: ethnicity, religion, or language; today's its classified solely based upon the color of one’s skin. Nevertheless, ethnic and racial identities are important and instill a sense of belonging and identifying with that specific group through attitude, behaviors. Moreover,
When reading The School Days of an Indian Girl by Zitkala-sa, it shows us a view of ethnic identity. By telling us how a little girl is in a home, away from her mother, while learning how to adapt to the new culture she’s in. In Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, it shows us a different view of a man in another form of an ethnic identity. It shows us that the man is seen as a different person then who he really is, instead of a black man who isn’t seen as what he actually is. In Why I am A Pagan by Zitkala-sa, it used cultural identity by focusing on how the world lost the connection it was given thousands of years ago. How the world is not as one with nature as it should be. It’s as if the world is a person itself, who
The author very frequently calls on other references and sources to validate their position and prove it to be more true because of statistics and studies. Doing these things allow the author to be more credible. The higher their credibility, the more persuasive and effective their argument.
This paper will identify the ethnic identifications within individuals. Ethnicity is part of everyone’s identity development. Individuals may have one ethnicity or multiple, depending on their current location, homelands, generations, religion, environment, language/dialect, physical appearance, and more. A cultural individual is considered ethnic either by being first, second, or third generation. According to Phinney (1989), there are four stages of ethnic identity development: diffuse, foreclosed, moratorium, and achieved. They describe when an individual explores or does not explore their own ethnicity, and accepting clarification and understanding of ethnicity. An individual can be placed within these stages throughout their developing lives. It is important to recognize these stages within an individual to better apprehend their identity and where they perceive their own identity in their position.
The mentioned identity and culture
Another method, evaluation of sources, further progress my critical thinking skills and helped me develop personal responsibility. When writing essays, quotes are a great strategy to prove a point. However, finding the right quotes and as well as deciding if the source of the quote is reliable might be a challenge for some people; this was not the case for me. In one of my essays, called “Shocking Results“, I wrote “Jerry Burger, a psychologist, points out that ‘follow-up questionnaire data [indicated] that the vast majority of
In contrast to the idea of race, Ethnicity refers to ethnic affiliation, or the “cultural practices and outlooks of a given community of people that set them apart from others” (Giddens, 1997:210). Members of a particular ethnic group see themselves as culturally distinct from other groups of people in a society or culture. There are different characteristics which serve as a way of
Identity is the fact of what a person is and what is their personality, character, beliefs, job and much more, it is basically who you are. Moniza Alvi's presents from my aunts in Pakistan is a poem that talks about the presents she got from her aunts. Basically the poem is a metaphor about her life, and it explains the coincide between both of her cultures, English and Pakistani. She describes how hard it is to be from two cultures which are completely different, and the struggle of finding who she truly is and how she tries to fit in both cultures. Alienation, assimilation, and more are all included in the poem and that shows how hard it is for her to cope up with both cultures. In this essay we will discuss how
This section review covers the factors related to racial and ethnic identity. The text stated that racial identity is self-determined and incorporates the values from one’s cultural group (Schwarzbaum & Thomas, 2008). The text also explained that ethnic identity can vary from family to family and can lead to value-based conflicts within a family (Schwarzbaum & Thomas, 2008). I thought this section also did a great job in discussing the differences between groups and also within groups. Finally, this section discussed how oppression occurs within these dimensions and how different marginalized individuals have experienced and fight against their oppressors within
Thirdly, the author by quoting credible sources and this is particularly so for a scientific-based article indicates his creditability in this way. The more complete sources that he or she quotes with full details and facts all of this adds to his credibility. Numbers and facts (such s names, dates and so forth) also add to the creditably of the news source and, in the case of a controversial article, inclusion of both sides of the story provides greater credibility.
When I think of the word “cultural identity”, I think of myself, and what makes up who I am as a person. My cultural identity influences everything about me, from the moment I wake up, to the minute I rest my head on my pillow at night. My culture influences the way I eat, speak, worship, and interact with people. However, I am not only affected by my own culture, but others’ culture as well. I am fortunate to have an extremely rich heritage, and I couldn’t be prouder of my cultural identity.
