Kantian ethics emphasizes on two conditions for an action to be morally good. The first, that an action only has moral worth if it is done for the sake of duty. The second is that an action is considered right if its maxim can be willed as a universal law. Kantian ethics then is working on the basis of duty and universality. In failing to recognize the multiple aspects of morality, Kantian ethics shows inadequacy as a moral theory. (Hinman, 2008) In Kantian ethics, self-interest and inclination are abandoned due to the sole emphasis on one’s duty. Hinman says that a middle ground of duty and inclination is a better foundation for morality. If a person is hiding several Jews in his/her home at the time of World War II and Nazis knock on the door and asks if he/she is sheltering Jews. In this situation, the government officials are the Nazis and if one follows Kantian ethics, he/she is obligated to tell the truth which would result in the death of several Jews.
The dilemma is that one’s duty is to tell the truth, but preserving human life is also an obligation. There are uncommon events that will lead one to confusion, especially when two or more duties are contrary to each other. Acting on duty then, is not always easy.
In accordance with Kantian ethics, to determine the moral worth of an act, one must first ask if the reason of the act is worthy of respect. “A dutiful action from any motive, aside from duty, does not express a good will.” An action has moral worth only if it expresses a good will. Acts that have other sorts of motives have no genuine moral worth. This shows that the motive of the act is what makes the act moral. Feelings and desire as a motivation of an action is on a lower classification of morality, but why then is that acts done out of feeling and desire have less moral worth than that of duty.
